Hey everyone thought I'd join and make myself known around these parts as I've been lurking for awhile. I generally flit around in different mini 'genres' and I'm currently on a bit a post apocalypse binge. It all started with the ramshackle games kickstarter catching my eye with it's rusty post apocalypse goodness. First up I have The Killdozer, it was made from a toy car from the £1 shop and a ton of plasticard and is hopefully the first of a couple of different faction vehicles. Here's some earlier WIP shots so you can see the size: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I managed to fluke all the measurements and make everything big enough to take 30mm bases. The turret is removable and fully magnetized in case I ever get round to making some different turrets: ![]() Here's the painted up nearly finished version ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The display board is a £1 canvas frame from Poundland that I covered in Wilco's Flexible brown wood filer: http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/fillers+sealants/wilko-wood-filler-flexible-ready-mix-brown-330g/invt/0158725 I'm sure there's a cheaper solution but it's just what I had to hand. I find using flexible fillers works better on terrain pieces as you get less chipping and with it being brown hopefully any damage over time won't be as noticeable. When the filler was still wet to add texture I pressed in some small stones and a few bits and pieces of scrap. Once dry it was base coated black highlighted grey and then slapped with various rusty/chemically colours and the 'chemical puddles' gloss varnished. The weekend just gone I managed to grab all of this from town ready for the next round of vehicles. ![]() The Humvee looking vehicle and the tractor were both from the poundshop along with both rolls of the silver wire (2 rolls for £1). Another discovery that I made in my local Wilco's is picture hanging wire (the small brass loops next to the tractor) looks almost perfect for 28mm rope, it's made of multiple really thin pieces of wire already pre-coiled into an almost perfect rope effect, I love little discoveries like this. Also over the weekend I popped into Pets at Home to nab some aquarium plants to carpet my post apocalypse, you can see some of the based up ones on the display board above. ![]() I'm trying avoid green for any foliage as I imagine my post apocalypse to be set on a nuclear wintered planet covered in chemical deserts and ash wastes and any plant life has evolved or changed to extract chemicals from the soil or air hence the crazy colours. Also that means that any objective markers or mission's can be based on capturing green oasis's or lone green plants etc, also the brightly coloured plants should contrast really well against a grey terrain board covered in rusting detritus. I'm debating whether or not to add some 'land coral' like this sort of stuff, mutated giant coral that's moved inland as much of the seas have dried up. ![]() That's it for now and apologies if you've already seen all of this in the Lead adventures forum, also if you're after some more pics I have some more up on my blog - http://ilikepaintinglead.blogspot.co.uk/ |

Woah! I'm a big fan of oversized vehicles like that and yours looks great! I like the detail and the fact that the turret is magnetic. Welcome to the forums. |

Welcome aboard! The interiour of the Killdozer seems rusty and claustrobic for me. The photos of the painted Killdozer and the terrain pieces are dramaticly illuminated. I like your work and how cheap common stuff can be converted! |

Thanks everyone for the welcome! @Mattblackgod - the pound shop only had the small ones that I bought and they're 30cm - 40cm, The Works do various different sizes for a little bit more: http://www.theworks.co.uk/c/art-craft/canvases |

Cheers The crackle medium should give you a flakey paint effect when it dries similar to the paint in the pic in the link below: http://pardulon-models.com/product_info.php/info/p181_Worn-out-Mattress.html |

I guess I understand now. You need this to give texture/colour a worn out touch, right? |

As far as I can tell as the crackle medium dries it shrinks and cracks and you get an old paint effect. If you google crackle paint you'll see what I mean, I haven't tried it out yet but hopefully it'll look good. |

Yeah, those are the most blinky-blinky toxic puddle I know!

Love the Killdozer! Excellent work. I really like the hatch door (gonna steal that idea for my next rig). Really good stuff there. Thanks for sharing. Oh, on a side note, I noticed the wire you used, for wiring and such. I use the same, but recently a friend suggested using the E string from a steel string guitar. I looked and the E string is ribbed so works great as 28mm wiring and provides another layer of texture. Of course now one of my guitars is missing its E string lol Cheers! ~OD |
