While the Hudson relaxes for a bit, I kind of fell into another project.

This is the 1:24 scale '77 GMC by Revell. The kit comes with a really nice snow plow and some 8-bolt 3/4 ton wheels... the only reasons I bought the kit! That left me with the rest of the truck, which I wasn't too excited about. I could have sold the remainder, or set it aside as trade fodder, but instead I chose to have a little fun and do it as a post-apoc hunter/gatherer guy's truck.

So far, here's what I've done...
I opened up the grille by filing material away from the back side. For some reason the kit comes with an early '60's Rochester mechanical fuel injection setup, so I replaced that with the intake manifold and carb from a Monogram '37 Ford street rod kit (which has a small block Chevy for power). I also cut away the tailpipes, which are molded right to the frame rails. The headers came from an old Monogram K5 Blazer mud bogger kit. So far, the majority of the kit is being built just as Revell intended, but I'll be adding a few more doodads and widgets to fill it out as the project progresses. Hopefully.... :jaw: ...

Slung some paint on it...

I also added the fog lights from a '76 Gremlin (the same '76 Gremmie I built as a turbine powered post apoc speedster not too long ago), and a 'crosshair' hood ornament from a Monogram Red Baron.

Really nice work! I personally know Jack about cars, but this looks like I could be interested in...

Nothing wrong with that- I'm kind of suprised how many car modelers aren't very knowledgable about cars. One of the best car modelers I know personally can barely check his own oil. ^_^ That's kind of the beauty of model building!

Today's efforts-

I added some slash cut stacks to the headers, made from aluminum tubing. The rollbar is from the kit, and I stole the wheels from a '56 Chevy. Yes, I'll need to do something to tone down that chrome! The spool of metal is from an AMT flatbed trailer. Still debating if I'll use the hoist, which is a modified Fujimi part.

And then you have people who work the other way around. One of my colleagues knows a lot about fighter planes (not my cup of tea...) but he's never flown in his whole life! Once, his wife asked if he wanted to go for a flight in one plane or another and he said: "are you crazy woman? It's only got one engine!!" Truth.

Work is coming along nicely mate :D .

Very impressive work. I’d forgotten a project could move along so quickly – mine tend to stall before they get that far… At this rate I expect the completed version will be up soon, and it will be interesting to see what the “doodads and widgets” you mentioned turn out to be. London1662 loaded his truck with Zombie chopping instruments, so I suppose as you mentioned the guy who owns this truck is a hunter the vehicle will be optimised for whatever he’s hunting. The great thing about PA stuff is you can go to town with your imagination in that regard – there will be all sorts of mutants out there, and meat is meat…
I’ve been inspired enough by this to consider how I might do something similar. I suppose hunter could be packing one of those rifles chambered for .50 BMG or 12.7mm (Preiser do some 1:24th WW2 German weapons which includes what appears to be a PzB 39) but I tend to prefer a “Mad Max” universe where functional firearms are a rarity. In such a situation big game would probably need something like a Roman bolt shooting engine, really big game a war engine capable of launching a harpoon (and an associated cable and winch). They would probably use vehicle leaf springs rather than the torsion bundles of the originals and could sit in the bed at the back like the heavy AA guns on those Pickups in Libya.
It pays to advertise so if he’s trading with other survivors he might have the skull and horns (or dessicated head) of the biggest thing he’s killed attached to the grille or Roo Bars at the front. A lot of GW beasties come with alternative heads that could be cadged off wargaming friends; the same source could provide fantastical skulls.
Speaking of spare heads some GW beasties have spare limbs, as do some of the Tamiya dinosaurs. They could be used as joints hanging from a roll-over bar or drying frame. Butchering a big beast would probably require an “A” frame and winch, or a hoist like the one you've just shown.
However, being me it’s unlikely ever to be more than a pipe-dream. At best it might happen in 28mm scale using that old “Grenadier” truck I have somewhere – the armoured cab is probably appropriate when hunting something big enough to hunt you back…

Regards,

M

Looks good. I feel the hoist makes the model look too cluttered.

Styrene burns quite well. Ask me how I know... B-)

I guess I should clarify- when I said our guy was a 'hunter/gatherer', I meant more along the lines of a scavenger- a guy who goes rooting around for parts and other items he can barter or exchange for whatever currency used in his post-apoc world... gold, silver, gold-pressed latinum, prostitutes, etc.. So the bed will be filled out with those kinds of valuables. I do like the idea of an actual game hunter's rig though. I did just get another one of these kits, so it's certainly possible...

I like the idea of a truck full of naked whores...
And so easily done:

Very nice work - this WIP is an education (at least for me!).
I hope you don't mind a couple of questions:
What sort of wash did you use to tone down the chrome, and is it the same one used to dull the vinyl tyres?
Do you know of an online Idiot's Guide to wiring and plumbing models of US V8 engines?
(The number of US cars I've seen in real life could be probably counted on the fingers of a very small Leper Colony, and under the hood in only a few cases. I don't even like looking under the bonnet of my own car...)

Toning down the chrome can be done with a dull clear coat (I like Testors Dullcote for this, as it works on plastic and vinyl), a wash of thinned black paint, or by stripping it and painting silver. Depending on the final tone I'm after, I've even used a little of all three methods on one component.

For wiring diagrams, you could go to a website for a company such as MSD Ignition or Accel- they normally have wiring diagrams listed on their site. As far as plumbing and wiring beyond the ignition, the best way to go is a Google or Bing image search for underhood shots of whatever vehicle it is you are working on. I'm not aware of any kind of database showing wiring and plumbing diagrams for vehicles.

Thanks for the prompt response. I've been trying to assemble a collection of images from the net for those kits I'm likely to build (a small fraction of the stash) but at some point wires and tubes tend to disappear out of sight to places unknown. Also kit instructions tend to refer to (manufacturer) Engine Blue (or Orange, or Red) as if everyone is familiar with the relevant colours, and I'm never sure if the colours on restorations are right or the that the conditions under which they have been photographed have affected the colour on the screen. I suppose I'll just customise or PA the lot rather than try to get the stock items right...

When they disappear out of sight- that's fine. Just let 'em end where they stop visually. :-/ That's what a lot of guys do- even the ones who build super-detailed NASCAR and racing models. I agree that some of the color callouts can be vauge. There's only one shade of Chevy Engine Orange, for example, but there are two kinds of Ford blue depending on what vintage of car you're working on.

Most guys who restore them go with the factory colors, and you're absolutely right on photos/monitor settings/etc. having an effect on how they look. My best advice on that is just go with what looks right to you.
