Tried my hands on doing some simple ruins based on CD's (stole idea from people here ). Since the pictures were taken I've sprayed the foam core with stone texture spray, but it seems it's difficult for it to stick and dry proper, might have to put some basecoating on the models first in that case .

Can you check if the stone effect spray is an acrylic or uses a solvent-based paint (cellulose?)? If it is solvent-based this will melt expanded polystyrene foam. But if it is, could you let me know what brand it is, please? I'm having the opposite problem -acrylic won't stick to Foamex, I'm hoping something solvent-based will... Regards, M |

I would take a dark brown acrylic paint and mix fine sand into it and make a thick paste.Base coat with that..........works every time. |

@Moramarth: Will check, haven't a clue from the top of my head. @UBBA: If the spray doesn't work out, that's the next thing I'll try. Thanks for the tip. |

Great beginnings! "Wall Texture" or "Paint Texture" powder is also an option; mixing it directly into your acrylic paint - a.k.a. GLOP. Just make sure it's a powder and not foam pellets. The powder gives additional roughness and helps bring out the drybrushing. An example may be found here -> http://ravenfeast.deviantart.com/art/Ruin-2-1-134981650?q=gallery%3Aravenfeast%2F12409109&qo=2 Edited by RavenFeast, Jan 19 2013, 08:31 PM.

Thanks for the tips and tricks all! @Al: That is a really well made example of a ruin mate! Very nice. I think I've got it sorted, the paint needed more time to dry than the instructions said (6-8hrs) and a second coating seemed to do the trick. I put some flock on the base and might add some graffiti/ scribbles at some stage. The ladders are a piece from my daughters Duplo set, didn't realise until after affixing that I've turned one of them the other way... oh well. Edited by Legionnaire, Jan 20 2013, 10:59 AM.

I need to get some of that paint. The ruins look good. Just some dust, dirt and graffiti to go. |

The spray paint is called PlastiKote Stone (9444 Manhattan Mist) and I got mine at Wilkos for less than £7 for a big can. Thank you for the encouragement oh Warlord. |

Very nice ruins. I like the size, they should be easy to use in many different scenarios. That's great that the spray didn't effect the foam. Nice finish from the spray. I love raiding toys for useful bits. Hopefully the kids don't mind too much.

Found some in my local Wilko. The cap colour is darker than it appears in your photos, could you tell us if the cap is a good match for the contents, please? I noticed there was a lighter shade ("Gotham Gray") and I was thinking of using that for walls and the like, but using the "Manhattan Mist" for tarmac, do you think that might work? Regards, M |

I think the cap colour is pretty spot on actually. Don't know about the Gotham Gray, they only had this one and very light colours in mine. Probably would work. |
