Some basic background fluff and storyline for a project I'm cooking up. Tell me what you think! It is very very rough at the moment so if you find any incontinuities with some of the story, that's why. Factions and some location fluff will be added over time.

Background:
At the height of the industrial revolution, an expedition was taken to the darkest parts of the African continent by Dr. Klaus Von Himmenstein . On his travels he stumbled across a cave with strange glowing crystaline ore deposits. Collecting what he could, he hightailed it back to Germany to study its properties, and it soon became apparent this was not a common earth element. Simply dubbed Handwavium, it was discovered to react violently when submersed in water, creating copious ammounts of steam without losing any of its origional form, and could continue to do so for long lengths of time before losing potency. Using this knowledge, work began on larger installations to harness this power for utilitarian and military use. The largest of these installations were known as Titan Installations, able to power entire countries for years with but a few metric tons of the mineral. Soon more and more of the Titans began to pop up across Europe and a few in the Americas as well, the countries linked by trans-ocean pipelines and ushering in an age of peace that lasted for years. That is, until pockets of the mineral began to run dry. Electrical charges to the mineral chunks themselves could quickly recharge their potency, but multiple attempts drained them quicly. Soon battles began to break out across the globe, sparking petty feuds between countries and families alike, all vying for what scraps of Handwavium they could find. At the climax of the infighting, one of the Titans began a meltdown sequence and exploded, causing a chain reaction across continents. The earth itself cracked open across techtonic plates, across hemispheres, spewing molted metal and smog into the sky and darkening the globe. Those who escaped these terrible days did so in any crevace they could, holding out as long as they could, the unlucky being choked out by the steam ruptures, turned into ravenous degenerates, and other horrors only seen in the nightmares of the survivors. The planet changed into a scarred blasted wasteland. Areas spared the apocalyptic events of the meltdowns became the last bastions of humanity, with bands of ragtag survivor groups making a meagre living on the land and scavanging the ruins of old industrial sites to rebuild and begin a new. But old rivalries never die... This is Victoria Apocalyptica, a steamier apocalypse.

Cool fluff. A few of the older vets on these forums have considered a VSF post apoc background. At least I will be able to use my VSF stuff for this setting. :D

Of course with the simpler production it is thought that much of the world would return to a Colonial/Victorian style of industry/kit and weapons after the Apocalypse.

Glad you like'em Matt, been cooking this idea for a while thought it was time to put it up and start fleshing it out. I know I may be quite the "Hobby Butterfly" (as GW apparently calls people like me) hopping from one project to another and not getting much done, but this is a project I want to see finished. Maybe even a ruleset to match, but that is a while later.
