Went to do the Aunt's shopping yesterday and came back with the Airfix 1:48th scale Supakat Jackal kit (don't worry, Auntie got her shopping first...) and the shop also had the 6x6 version, the Coyote. These are a bit pricey, 16 notes for the Jackal and an extra three quid if you want a couple more wheels on your wagon, but while as true Wastelanders we make most of our stuff out of recycled junk if you've been successful in your looting you might want to give these a look. There's a good review of the Jackal here: http://armorama.co.uk/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=8430 Given the Jackal was designed with the GAFA (Great Afghan F-All, a.k.a the Dasht-e-Margo or Desert of Death) in mind it should be right at home in the Wasteland, being 1:48th scale it will go well with 28mm figures. The Jackal was ordered as a replacement for the WMIK Land Rover, and Airfix do this as a double kit with the "Snatch" Land Rover as the pair, this box being 19 quid also. A friend had bought one of these and I was able to have a look at it, and it is equally as good as the Jackal - possibly better as the WMIK appears to have the option of being built with or without a ballistic protection upgrade. Both the WMIK and the Snatch have full engine detail and alternative bonnets (hoods) depending on whether you want it open or closed. I suspect at some future date if I acquire this I'll build the WMIK as straight but turn the Snatch into a PA vehicle. I may be biased against it as I understand it has a bad reputation with the British forces - barely adequate in Northern Ireland and a death-trap in Afghanistan - but I understand some are being recycled as Public Order Vehicles and some are already in use by at least one Constabulary so they are entirely appropriate for PA Riot scenarios. I think the Land Rover has seen action and is still a widely used utility vehicle in various emergency service over here in the UK. I think its lack of armour is its main downfall. I look forward to see what you do with this kits. Nice review its helpdul to see what you get on the sprues.

Land Rovers where never designed to be AFVs just transportation in a similar way to the Willies Jeeps. They are in use all over the world as off road transport. The main issue I have heard of is that fuel tanks are under the seats...the place where many baddies are shooting at. |
