I would but plasti-card round these parts are £1.99 a sheet... in a town where a 1/43 diecast is usually no more than £1.99 each. I built a tank from scratch few months ago and loved every minute. I find I can get the look I want more often than not... scratch building is my last resort though as I become obsessed!
Have you trief looking online? That ssounds ridiculously expensive.... I paid about 0.5€ a sheet...

A muscle car however... there are NO muscle cars in 1/43 round here, I would scratch build me a rat-rod or a mustang in a heart beat if funds allow! Keep the amazing tut's going fella!

I feel your pain - it's what got me to revisit scratchbuilding vehicles as well.

No excuses, Inky: It's damn easy! Here's one of my first scratchbuilds:

Now that everything's dry, we put on the exhaust vents. Ad some layers of plastic card at the bottom to make it fit:

And glue them on:

The rest of the Time machine is more conversion work than actual scratchbuilding: Clutter the back with gadgetry! We don't have to be too close to the original here, as they make changes to the design all the time in the movies.

It's now almost done and can be primed, as we can't perform the next steps before that.

As we're closing the actual building process, let#s get one final step out of the way now: the windows.
We again need out trusty paper plan to get the exact outline. I'll attach a small file with just the windows to this post for your convenience.

Put some small strips of double sided tape on each window:

Attach it to some clear plastic. Blister packages are ideal!

Cut them out with scissors and remove the paper:

Color one side (Later it will be the INSIDE) with whatever color you like for your windows. Do it in reverse order: If normally you'd paint a window dark blue and give it a light drybrush, do the drybrush BEFORE applying the dark blue, for example. Store them somewhere until you're done painting. You will then glue them inplace with the painted side towards the model, thus giving the windows a perfectly smoot, shiny surface.

This pretty much concludes the building process - I'm rather sure you guys can manage to glue some wheels in place without detailed instructions:)

I hope you liked it and are inspired to build something yourself - after peer-pressring me into writing this thing, it would be rude not to! ;-)
I'll now start painting!

Had some time to kill today, so I slapped on a paintjob to finish the model for you guys. Here's the final result with the windows and wheels attached:

Haven't gotten around to weathering yet, but that wouldn't be part of this tutorial anyway :-)
So looks like we're done here!

Yeah, I liked the 'chimney' of it. Though it probably would be best to have Marty needing to obtain some plutonium in the post apoc wastelands to travel back in time and set things right again (He really shouldn't have eaten that twinky back in 1955!)
