Appearing taller could be attributed to the Slicks posture too... if ya squeeze the truth a wee bit... |

I'm not sure what kind of posture they're going to have now . Took a dremel to the remaining chunks of base under the feet and ended up having half the feet come off. Tried a razor saw and got the same result. The join of legs to the body just isn't that sturdy. Not that it's too weak to hold the mini up, it's just not handling well the stress of removing the bases. So I've got a bunch of leggless or half leggless figs now. Not exactly sure where to go now. I'll probably just put 2 long pins in each one and give them feet and shins from heroclix figs. Should be easy to do with vinyl. Could try it with some plastic feet also. Moral of the story is that these figs have really thick cast-on bases. Better to leave them on, and build-up or sink them into the base than try to remove them. Does make me wonder why they didn't do these with thinner bases or slottas. Edited by eilif, Oct 6 2014, 03:18 AM.

If ya have access to a Dremel Tool with a cutting wheel ya might be able to remove the excess that way, or on a grinding wheel. Or just glue them to a 1 inch diameter fender washer and build up a base around that.

Yeah I used a cutting and grinding wheel and I think it was just too much force being rapidly applied to the legs. I'm not too fond of washer bases as most of my figs are on slottas. What I should have done was just cut the inside out of a slotta put the stock fig in side with something under it to raise it's feet level with the side of the base and just fill it in with concrete patch. I didn't do this because I wanted to glue them to the same champ industries plastic bases as my van Saar have. Now the decision is whether to try and save these figs or start over with new ones. |

Have ya given any thought to glue the Slick to a washer, then cutting the top surface of a slotter off and attach the remainder of the slotter onto the the washer? Filler could then be used to complete the base. It might give the appearance of being a basic slotter... |

That's kind of what I had in mind. I've got to use something to bring the feet up to be level with the edge of the slotta. I've got a bunch of steel washers leftover from my brief foray into magnetic basing. IIRC, some of them are less than 25mm. They should fit nicely inside a slotta and would probably be perfect for raising them up the 1 or 2mm I would need. The only problem now is figuring out how to reattach or replace the missing and broken feet. A few of the feet are completely missing as they flew off into the grass while I was cutting them outside. |

Would building a debris pile up to the coat hems to disguise the missing feet work? Or recast the feet in resin using another Slick's feet for molding...

Those could all work, but I'd rather have the bases a bit cleaner, and resin casting is too much work for $2 figures. I've got plenty of heroclix I can butcher so I'll probably just borrow their feet. The Van Saar are finished. I'll have a proper blog and lots of pics up in a few days, but in the meantime here's a teaser. Not bad for a simple block paint job, some drybrush on the green and hair, and a dip! |

Thanks folks! I submitted the post to our blog curator, so I should be back in a day or two with pictures of the whole gang. Half the gang is figures I bought in the mid 90's and it feels great to have them all finally painted to a standard I'm happy with. |

Here they are, 18 Van Saar and one scum. The first Necromunda figures I've painted in nearly 20 years! This was also my first completed project using Champ Industries bases and Winsor Newton Galeria Acrylic Matt Varnish. A few examples. Pics of all the figs as well as the cigar box I converted for transport and my review of the bases and varnish here: http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2014/10/new-paint-for-old-friends-necromunda.html |

Yup, they're painted very well! You apply the dip with a brush correct? How do you clean the brush afterwards, with mineral spirits?? |

Thanks! Yep, I brush-dip almost all my figures. For clean up use mineral spirits just as with any other oil based paint. Dipping will eventually kill your brushes, but if you clean them out thoroughly they will last for at least a few painting sessions. You can see my whole brush-dipping tutorial here: http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2012/01/with-liberty-and-brush-dipping-for-all.html Edited by eilif, Oct 13 2014, 08:09 PM.

9 more sci-fi salvage crew members painted up for me by RadZone. http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2014/10/a-sci-fi-salvage-crew-and-six-reason-to.html 6 of them are figs that are currently in the Salvage crew kickstarter that ends in a bit over a week. A sample of what's inside. 3 of the 9 figs. |
