 They should have kept it open so you could keep exploring. Maybe come up with additional side mission packs to keep life interesting.

The other vaults in the area are interesting too.

 if you download the broken steel DLC it raises the lvl cap to 30 and lets you play after the project purity ending. I re-played the game over the weekend and blasted through all the expansions. at lvl 23 its a bitch when all the mobs you find in random encounters are 2+ giant rad scorpions, 5-10 raiders in enclave armor, and deathclaws. Out of all 5 extra expansions the pitt is still my favorite.
The sun went down and the ground started sort of grinding.
A blinding light tore across the sky.
A cyclone swept the landscape and left it completely flattened out.
And several twirls of smoke unfolded like gigantic flowers.

The way the morning broke was quite unusual.

More depth?
More quests, more areas, a more detailed storyline. For example, there's a character named Kaga who claims to be the "real" Chosen One, and he has a series of scripted encounters with the player character. He has sworn revenge on Arroyo and is hell-bent on killing you so that they won't be saved.

One of the nicest bug fixes is that the Hollow-Point/Armor-Piercing discrepancy has been fixed. Now, as originally intended, hollow points bounce off heavy armor and AP rounds punch right through. Both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 had fucked up code so that AP ammo was worthless against armored foes.
