According to the Bible, there will be seven years of tribulation, followed by 1000 years of peace. But while the years 2013-2019 are known today as The Tribulations, 40 years on the promised peace has yet to materialize. 2013- On January 25, just days after his inauguration, an explosion tears through a meeting room at Camp David, where the President was meeting with leaders of Occupy movements and Tea Party activists. Although to this day no one knows who was responsible, left and right are quick to blame the other. The next year would see civil war throughout the country, with armed gangs from both sides seeking revenge for grievances both real and imagined. Farmers hoard their crops, and refuse to take them to markets. In many places the National Guard is called out to force farmers to market, but many guardsmen turn and fight against their comrades. That winter, people in the cities, cut off from their food supplies, starve. August 4, Two small nuclear warheads are lost while being transported between secret locations in Iran. September 13, Greece collapses. The well-off Euro nations decide to cut their losses and refuse to loan any more money. The Greek government essentially abdicates, leaving the country in a state of anarchy. Over the next three months, Italy and Portugal follow. Over the next year, Spain, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Turkey also collapse. Ireland is kept afloat for a few years only with help from Great Britain, but in 2018 Great Britain is in such straits that it is unable to assist any longer. Ireland goes under in a matter of days. 2014 - Despite calls for its cancellation, the World Cup takes place in Brazil. The entire tournament is ill-tempered. During the semi-final, an Uruguayan player begins foaming at the mouth and bites off the ear of his Dutch opponent. The match and the rest of the Cup is cancelled. Shortly afterwards, many who traveled to Brazil begin to fall ill. The Zombie Plague begins. South America is quickly overrun, and large swaths of Europe and Asia as well. 2015 - May 22, a Russian Army truck containing a nuclear tipped mobile missile is driven to the center of Moscow and detonated. The entire city is destroyed. As the zombie menace continues, China begins to use tactical nuclear weapons to stem the tide, killing several million of its own people who were still uninfected. With no organized government, border control fails, and zombies begin to enter the United States from Mexico. 2016-17 - Unknown terrorist groups begin using small "dirty bombs" (made from the "lost"” Iranian nuclear materials) . There is little loss of life, but mutations increase in babies born during this time. The Ogallala Aquifer dries up. Millions of residents in the middle American states have no drinking water. Crops and livestock also have no water to grow. People are forced to dig small wells for individual use, as in olden times, which they then have to protect from marauders and "claim jumpers". 2018 - 106 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater, ravage the earth. 31 of them register above 8.5. The largest occurs in Japan, and decimates the entire northern half of the country. The resulting tsunami covers almost all of the Pacific islands. Another quake causes a large part of one of the Azores to slide into the sea. The tsunami from that inundates the southeastern United States. October 10, The Yellowstone supervolcano erupts. Ash mixes with the great Iceland volcano eruption and covers much of the northern hemisphere. Interestingly, the prevailing weather patterns, consisting of a virtual straight jet stream path, continue to this day. Therefore, all of the lands above the pattern were covered in ash, areas just a few miles south were unaffected. Most places north of, roughly, 41-44 degrees latitude are now in permanent, sunless, winter. 2019 - August 15, a crazed US airman at the B-2 bomber base in west-central Missouri steals a bomber and drops a nuclear bomb on the base. He flies to nearby Memphis and drops a bomb on that city. Then does the same to St. Louis. He is finally shot down by fighter jets while apparently on his way to Chicago. 2020 - January 2, as his last, dying act, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un unleashes his nuclear arsenal on the Korean peninsula, completely destroying both South Korea and his own country. This was the last act of The Tribulations. Only 40 years after, few remain alive who remember that time. Mutations, radiation, and savagery cause life to be short. Factions to follow |

Yeah, I actually considered having an asteroid strike as well, but decided to quit while I was ahead. Figured I'd leave at least a few people alive. Anyway, continuing on. NuKC Small enclaves have formed in the area which was once known as KC (some oldtimers say it once had a real name, but it is long forgotten). The city itself is an enclave surrounded by desolation. Barely 100 miles north is the great Snow Wastes of the endless winter. 50 miles west and south-west is the Dust Bowl, a desert which stretches all the way to the Rocky Mountains. South of NuKC is an unexplored area dense with forests and inhabited by monsters and wild creatures. East is the devestation of Whiteman Air Base. It is still heavily radioactive. Here are the main locations in the NuKC area (with a link to its identity in pre-Tribulation times). The names are pretty basic, but I figure that after The Tribulations, survivors just couldn't muster up the energy to come up with cool and creative names for places (My own uninspiring user name is an homage to them ). I've also added the models which I plan on using, although finances prevent me from having more than a couple of these at the moment. Well, that and any actual painting talent. The Fort: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Leavenworth,_Kansas Once a military base north-west of KC, The Fort was also a prison for military personal. These criminals banded together and took part of The Fort several years ago. Now they wage a war with the remaining military personal for control of the heavy weapons, tanks and other high tech weaponry. So far, the military has managed to hold them at bay, but because of the effort, they have been unable to send any soldiers to scout the area around the base. Army: Mega mini Frontier Defense Force Convicts: Kryomek Cyclos infantry The Abbey: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conception_Abbey In 2015, whether called by God or just his own common sense, the new Pope perceived that the end times were near. He secretly fortified many abbeys and monasteries with weapons and supplies, as well as electronic copies of ancient and modern manuscripts. As in the Dark Ages, he hoped that the Catholic Church would preserve knowledge for the masses. The Abbey sits on the edge of the Snow Wastes, and during the early times was a bulwark against the hordes of zombies fleeing from the cold of the north. While the zombie horde has lessened, there are still monsters to fight, and the nuns and brothers are also vigilant for convicts from The Fort which venture into their area. And, before you ask, the Pope revoked the celibacy requirement for monks and nuns, so the religious there do have sex and babies and all that stuff. Monks: Black Cat Bases cultists Nuns: GZG Battle Nuns The Caves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubTropolis Apparently one day during 2016, the workers who lived in The Caves decided not to leave. The doors were shut, and no one came in or out for 30 years. During that time, the population grew and prospered. They discovered ways of growing crops using only the artificial lights, and the dogs, cats and other pets were bred to provide sources of protein (yeah, gross I know). Also discovered was a scientific company researching and manufacturing robotic and cybernetics. Ten years ago, the people decided to see what it was like outside of The Caves. Although they are not well armed, the Cavemen travel in well armored vehicles with plenty of Robotic guards. Unfortunately, the first group they encountered were the mutants of The Park (see below). The Cavemen continue to make sporadic forays into the NuKC area, trying to avoid the mutants, while they search for more pure-strains. Humans: SGMM pulp civilians Robots: haven't decided yet The Park: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worlds_of_Fun Sons and daughters (mostly sons) of the first generations of mutants in the 2020s. Having been shunned by civilized society, the mutants have taken up a loose tribal grouping. Several of these tribes have congregated in a former amusement park (fitting, some say). Short tempered and energetic, mutants are willing to fight with anyone outside their own tribe. Many of them are highly intelligent, and able to conceive and manufacture complicated weapons. Others are barely able to walk and breath at the same time, and are useful for no more than cannon fodder or mules. Since coming into contact with the Cavemen, the mutants have searched for their base, with no luck so far. The mutants of Funland are slavers, capturing normal women wherever they find them. The mutants will mate with the women, forcing them to bear many children. Mutant children (the majority of babies born) will be accepted into the tribe. Normal girls will be held for future breeding. Normal boys will be killed and eaten. After the slave woman is worn from childbirth, she will also be killed and eaten. Basically any mutant I can find The Tower: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Memorial The former downtown area of KC was heavily damaged by the civil war. In this pile of rubble, there are still things of value to be found. The scavengers at The Tower, are a well organized salvage operation. It’s dangerous work, not only scouting for useful items, but fighting off the dogs, rats, rubble monsters, and occasional zombie horde. The items scavenged are traded with most of the other human settlements, and occasionally even with mutants. Copplestone and EM4 scavengers The Vault: http://www.umkckangaroos.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=18300&ATCLID=204869123 When, in 2009, a new soccer field was built at the University, no one knew that construction of an underground vault was also taking place below it. In 2016, ironically the same day that the people of The Caves decided to seal themselves in, university academics and security officials led a hundred students into the vault and sealed themselves in. Through the vault’s communication network, they had constant updates from the world above. The Vault Dwellers emerged 20 years ago, and immediately set about salvaging what remained of the library and research facilities on campus. Scavengers from The Tower had only just made it that far, but the Vault claimed all of the former campus as their territory, and forbade the Scavengers from trespassing. No violence has come of this, although Scavengers still manage to sneak their way on campus at times. The Vault Dwellers have done probably the most extensive exploration of NuKC, and have established physical contact with most of the other factions. They have not at this time, however, planned settlements outside of the campus. Lead Bones SPRU agents The Mission/The Farm: Settlements within a couple of blocks of each other. Just two groups of survivors trying to eek out a living without getting slaughtered by marauders, eaten by zombies, or assimilated by the larger factions around them. (author's note: no link, The Mission is just a park I used to pass with a sign which said "Welcome to Mission" (Mission, Kansas, that is)). The Farm is just north of The Mission, on the site of an old elementary school. The residents live in the school and grow crops and raise pigs and chickens on the playground there and at the park across the street. They are a protectorate of The Vault, although none of the Survivors have actually been there. Basically any normal human Sprint: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_World_Headquarters_Campus This collection of buildings has a lot of communication equipment. It was taken over by a paramilitary survivalist group in the early days of the civil war, and has been held since then by their descendents. Because of the high tech equipment, they have established contact with all of the other factions in the area. They have also received transmissions from similar organizations in other countries, although they have not told the other NuKC factions about this. The Survivalists therefore have the best knowledge of what is going on in the outside world. There is the belief among The Survivalists that order will one day be restored, and they aim to be in a position to stake their claim to power when it comes around. Although they are armed, they have few heavy weapons, and are therefore unable to take on the power of the other large factions. Basically any modern/Spec. Force type human Free State: http://freestatebrewing.com/ On the western edge of the NuKC area, next to the Dust Bowl, lies the Free State. This is the largest faction by population in the area. The people are wild and jovial, and have established good relations with those around them by supplying them with beer. They protect the area from anything wandering in from the Desert, or from any rogue convicts from The Fort (though they do trade with the convicts as well as the Army) EM4 bikers and savages Mongoose Judge Dredd street gang The Church: http://www.cor.org/ In 2018, Church members crowded into the mega-church to ride out a particularly fierce onslaught of marauders. After several days, a group of elders decided to arm themselves and fight. They won that day. The Church was fortified and most of the congregation stayed. Through the next 15 years, the Church fought off government forces, marauders, zombies and rednecks (see below). 12 years ago, a false prophet arose, and captivated many of the congregants with stories of Moses and the Hebrews in the desert. He claimed that if they wandered in the desert, they too would find the Promised Land. About 3/4 of the congregation followed him, and they went off into the Dust Bowl, never to be heard from again. The strength of The Church was lessened considerably by this, and they rarely venture very far north anymore. Warzone Lutherans The Summit: South and east of NuKC, small collections of backwoods folk started gathering together for mutual protection. The largest of these collections are the folk of The Summit. The population of the settlement varies, people come and go as they please, and sometimes large extended families will just up and disappear one night if they think they can find someplace better. The Summit is mostly self-sufficient, they grow their own crops and hunt and gather what they need. Leaving the compound is a risky business, however, and rarely do the hunting parties return with all alive or uninjured. Nice. In addition to the fluff I'm also interested in what rule set you will use to fight your battles and how your campaign will be staged. I'm especially interested in tech levels of the various factions, how you will handle resources and the buying of additional forces. If you've listed this somewhere else I must have missed it. If not, let me know when and where you posted it. Edited by Crazy Joe, Mar 20 2012, 03:56 PM.

It is my hope that there will be little combat between most of the factions. They have learned to exist pretty much in harmony. Most of the combat will be between small scavenger-type parties and the various monsters inhabiting the area. The populations of most settlements will remain relatively fixed (The Park, The Tower, Free State, and the Summit will potentially have people coming in from the wastes). I'm not sure how to describe tech levels, except to say that they are mostly current modern. The soldiers at The Fort, and one of the mutant tribes at The Park, will have higher level of weapons. Simple engines, generators, power tools and the like are used by all of the groups, although sparingly, since they require scavenging for fuel. The Caves has more cybernetic knowledgeShort range communication between members of a faction and between factions exist. And the survivalists at Sprint have longer range communications. The main idea behind the campaign is that the crazy prophet who led the people of The Church into the wilderness was correct. There is a place out there set up by (someone?) which is essentially Paradise. The survivalists know this, but don't know where it is. No one else knows about it, but they have clues. Probably not quite the detail you were wanting. Sorry. If you have specific questions, please feel free to ask. I'm always happy to answer (or make something up). --Scott |
