Project VSF!!! (I tried to get the Pigs in Space voice effect but failed!). :D

Yes my friends I have finally got some pictures together of my VSF project. Due to cash restraints this will be a budget project using spare or unused miniatures from my collection. I may replace them at a later date with figures from proper lines. But half the fun of any project is the converting and messing about.

I have a handful of minis from various lines that took my fancy over the years and so have a decent collection of figures for the period. It is helped by some of the LAM and Ramshackle stuff having a VSF/Steampunk feel to them. However they will do for adventures, explorers and other characters. What I need is some Rank and file for my forces.

First Up...the Prussian Aether Korps.

Posted Image
The rank and file armed with clockwork self loading carbines. These are Plastic WZ Bauhaus (as are all the figures in this force at the time of writing). This little lot once served in my Aryanriche forces in my PA setting. The SMGs had the magazines, laser red spot site and hand grips removed. In my games these can fire 90 rounds a minute (a rate that even the new fangled bolt action rifles cannot achieve) but suffer from jams and short range.

Posted Image
The officer armed with a large revolver. The head is from a PLastic WZ trencher. The pistol was shaven back and a revolver drum added.

Posted Image
The fire support - a Steam Driven Maxim Rotary Machine Gun. The fire rate is similar but the barrels last much longer than a Maxim. The weapon is lighter and a Maxim but the steam pack makes it a monster to haul. This guy can only move at half rate and cannot run. He has no option but to turn and face whatever horror may have just appeared from the Martian sands or Venusian Jungle. Still at least his weapon should be enough to deal with any problems they may encounter.

The steam pack!

On the red sands of Mars....

Martians!!

The Leader is an unknown figure I have had in my lead pile since 1990. The rest of the Martians are old Metal (OOP) GW Metal Wood Elf Wardancers.

The red skin tones came out well. I like the blues but I think they are a little too out of place for Mars. Maybe Venus. I may repaint these guys.

More to follow soon...Prussian Steam Armour, British Troops and a British Steam Walker. Oh and more Martians...

Cracking stuff Danny! The blue martians look good, but I agree that they aren't as well suited as they could be for Mars. The blue would look good on some lizardmen or kroot!

I saw some Amazons painted blue for Mars over on LAF. I think I will be pinching that idea. :D Of course Lizard men and Parrot men (Kroot) will be present on Venus. :D

I will also be using the Smoggers on Mars as a Subterranean race. I love those minis and I think they would suit the desert nicely. They have no affiliation to any Earth power as of yet. They like to pinch stuff and may also be hired as mercenaries or to perform certain unsporting tasks. :D

The "Steam Maxim" is a great idea. Clever move to modify the rifles, too.

Gosh that´s not nice to read when you are part of the German industry :-/
But, actually, we once built a rifle that had it´s flaws. 1888.

PS:
Just wondering... Do I actually sound like Klaus from American Dad now?

Hey Finisterrae,

do you have any details of that rifle? Its a new bit of technology in my setting and like all new technology they have a habit of going wrong. Besides I need something to balance out the rate of fire in game terms! :D I know the early British Bolt Action rifles had issues until Enfield made them.

Well, it´s been the "Gewehr 88", aka "Kommissionsgewehr 88", just check out Wiki. Talking about the Enfield, it enabled well trained British troops to achieve a much higher rate of fire than their opponents using the Mauser.

Thanks I will look into that. :D It was the Lee Metford that had the problems. The Lee Enfield didnt come into service for a while after my time line. Having fired one I have to say that the bolt action enables pretty rapid bolt cycling.

I will be trying to push these projects forwards this week. Mars is getting some new terrain.

The Prussians will be getting some steam armour. These are conversions and I am working on making some steam packs. The plan is to get a decent master done and then to make a mould. I am working on a smaller Galvanic Generator Steam pack which will power Lighting guns and what not. Again I am looking to cast them if they look half decent.

The Brits first unit needs a lick of paint. I have been experimenting in adding goggles to them to VSF them up at bit. There are plans for a Steam Walker in the pipeline too. For vehicles I am thinking of making the end of a Maxim MG and casting that.

Dreamforge games might be a good place to look for Steampunk type Prussians. I have been eyeing them for a while...

Some ideas and inspiration in the form of the Armies of Nemesis from the "City of Heroes" MMO.

Nice inspiration Syko. :D

Gasmasked Mook - they would need a head swap and a little tweaking as they look too modern/sci-fi to my eye. I still have some WZ plastic Bauhaus left. So I may use them as either weapon crews or specialists as there isnt enough for a squad.

Tomo - I am working on a Robogear walker for the bottom half of my walker. A old pill bottle makes up the body. It now needs lots of detail.

I plan on conversions of WZ Trenchers to make the Queens 1st Ether Regiment. Hopefully they will bring the man and weapon power of the Brits up a bit as they are out gunned and out manned by the Prussians at present. The Martians have no fire power so I am going to add some archers and yet more melee warriors to their ranks. If I get a chance some sort of fantastic weapons may also be built for them to use.

Digging through my collection of junk for conversion I guess I can get a few more vehicles made. It should be fun. The Prussians will get one. But I see the Brits as more mechanised in my settings.

When I get to making Venus I will have to supply more in the way of airships. Most of the Brits vehicles will be useless in the swamps and jungles. The Brits will need more man power too. The project will be needing some Lizard and Parrotmen.

I actually thought Tau Fire Warriors would make good English, until I looked at their alien legs... Helmet white and the uniform red, African Colonial style. I can't justify the kind of money GW asks only to use the upperbody.

Though, the weapons still might be good with some minor Victorian Aging maybe small brass colored gears on gun metal and painted wooden portions. They could be called Air Rifles or Professor Oystervall's Mechanical/Magnetic Lightening Gun.

Here we see members of the 24th Queen's Rifles. This regiment sees action on Britain's Martian Colonies. As the latest Lee Metfords have not arrived the troops have been issued with Webley Martini Double Action Revolver Rifles (or just Revolver Rifles) that the company had supplied to trade with the Colonials. This gives them some ability against the Martian Hordes or the Prussian's equipped with their Clockwork Carbines. Troops will be arriving from Earth with the latest kit kit soon.

It's about time, actualy it's about the Victorian Era, but none the less the Brits look cool in their goggles and the Steam Walker is fantastic, I like that quite a bit. How about giving it the monicker, The "Stevenson Steamer?"
