After long deliberation and much rooting through my stored junk I have decided to make a rubble fortress. A well set up operation such as Vali's had access to some looted heavy machinery (dont forgot to loot those industrial parks kids, you never know what is left there!). Large Slabs of concrete recycled from the ruins where buried upright in the ground and had large piles of dirt stacked at the bottom to secure them. In addition to this metal plates and other scrap is added to the fortress to make it tougher. So far there will be several 6" sections of wall with a gate and two corner sections allowing a fair bit of flexibility from the set. I am undecided on how high to make them at the moment. I found a load of 2 x 1" polystyrene packing pieces from a mirror we got last year. These are in the region on 3 to 5 foot long. I will be chopping these to make the dirt piles and some of the rubble walls. Other bits of Polystyrene will be chopped up to make the rest of the rubble walls. I am considering making a couple of scrap wall sections too just for some variety. If time allows I may also make up a watch tower or two. The walls will be fairly easy to make but the gate section will need some thought, planning and extra detail. Now where did I leave that hot glue gun? |

Have you seen these resin concrete slabs from Antenocitis workshop ? they might go rather nicely with your rubble fort idea and at £3.99 for 35 won't break the bank either. Link below concrete slabs Edit: Ok that picture was a bit crap might have to follow the link for a decent look

Wastelanders! Wastelanders...I am flattered by your enthusiasm for this project. But this is just a concept at the moment with a little chopping going on. Please be patient...pictures will follow. It is a similar idea shady with maybe a bit of Megaton from Fallout 3 thrown in too. |

Right you mob of mad men....work starts.....![]() This will be gate section with a couple of wall straights. These will be the dirt piles the walls are embedded into. Old Isenbard Brunel - engineer to the discerning wastelander has been called in. See I told you we looted some old mech diggers!! ![]() The wall and corner dirt piles. Good enough for a defensive position now? Not for this old warlord!!! Pretty soon old Isenbard started hauling bits of rubble from the wastes and has made an stirling effort in getting some walls up... ![]() The walls so far. They are mostly recycled from old poly packing pieces. I was going to build some ruins but this is more fun. The holes will be covered with scraps of metal. It should give it a nice ramshackle look. ![]() Closer look at the walls. The poly was melted quickly to remove that beady look and give it that old worn concrete look. CAUTION - do this outside in a well ventilated area and pass the flame over it quickly. Slowly or you will melt the hell out of it or worse set it on fire. Take extra care when working with flames as you may burn yourself or your house down! Warlord's warning over - back to the pics! Not Liable for death, injury or loss....although we may point and laugh! ![]() Another close up pic. ![]() Inside the walls... ![]() Inside the walls even more! ![]() Close up of the corner piece. ![]() Other side of the corner piece. ![]() The rear of the corner piece. There is still more walls to make, the gate and the corner to make. More to follow soon! Edited by mattblackgod, Jan 31 2012, 11:47 AM.

Looks like you're off to a great start Danny! You're making me think I need to pull the finger out! (And as I want to finish the sea wolf steam ship before attacking the hill fort, I guess I'm going to be a busy bunny!) |

Fantastic start Warlord! Why not use a thin covering of glue and spackling rather than melt the foam to hide your "lit'l balls?"

That will getting done too. I like the way it makes it look eroded. It's the same principle I used on my other ploy ruins. |

You know I had forgotten Tenpenny Tower. I dont know why as I used it as my main base of operations in Fallout 3 (once I had wiped out every one who lived there for being two bit stuck up wasteland snobs!). It does have the look of those fortifications. Further planning includes some walkways and firing platforms built into the walls. That is another reason I based them so any walkway & wall supports can be added to the models. |

Okay more WIP pics...![]() More walls for the fortress.... ![]() A closer look at the walls ![]() Rear ![]() Front ![]() Rear The next corner section... ![]() ![]() ![]() The gate section... ![]() I made a little higher than the walls as gate sections have to look more impressive...its the law! ![]() Then I added some big concrete posts that are higher again....yep I am out to impress those wastelanders! I plan a couple of beams across the gate section with flooring and protection so my wasters can give those raiders a kicking. Maybe some holes in the flooring to drop grenades/rocks/poo on them. ![]() The posts go into the scrap wall section. What we have so far. ![]() ![]() I am now wondering if I should make a couple of extra corner sections so I can make an entire fortress on the table. The down side is that I am running out of that 2" poly packing peice. I am not too sure how much more I can make from the junk piles. I was also thinking of piling lumps/slabs of rubble at the base of the dirt piles as extra protection. There is some scraps of cork tile laying about some where. Another question is to spike or not to spike the dirt piles? Next up - filling holes, some starter detail, textured paint and figuring out the design of my gates....if I dont go for the Mad Max2 armoured bus approach. |

I think rubble and spikes along the bank (to break up any attempts to get a battering ram close), but to stay away from the spikes on the walls as they'll probably make it too easy for an attack to climb them. The walls are certainly looking good - and I like the gateway! The armoured bus is cool as ideas go, but it'd be quite low in comparison to the gate posts. Extra corners.... They can be useful, but it does make the fort quite small if it's all on the table at once; so I'd say to use the remaining bits of poly to make more wall sections (and maybe a 3rd corner, or possibly even just a 45o bend) to give some more flexibility... |

Looking good Instead of spikes how about some barbed/razor wire along the bottom. Guy on flea bay sold me 5m of 28mm scale barbed wire for about three quid. Wire and metal girders seem more PA than stakes to me. |

Are these ripped right out of buildings and streets? If so, the exposed Rebar could be used as a form of protection as well. Maybe even use them as an anchor for razorwire. Best way I saw to do Rebar spikes was to clip pieces off of paperclips then glue them into the foam at shattered/broken sections. Fits the bill very nicely. Great work so far man keep on truckin! |
