The 2012 Challenge!!!!

The 2012 Challenge is here...you asked for it...and you got it.....

As with all our challenges this is for fun only and to inspire each other on to make something cool for your collections. There are no prizes...it's a challenge not a competition. Hopefully you will have fun.

The 2012 challenge is to make a fortified Position. We realize that this may seem a bit daunting as it could in some cases be a large project. But a simple camp site with a barricade of some sort will do. As its Post Apoc it must be slightly Ramshackle recycling what is available.

The general idea is to keep something or someone out and to provide firing positions and cover for the defenders. You cant just go camping in the wastes and expect to live through the night!!

Barricades, bunkers, foxholes, trenches, watch towers, piled up rubble/dirt, old ruins barricaded, fortified buildings, old Walls, overturned cars, Truck Container box walls, overturned truck trailers and fortified truck trailers right up to fortresses built of scrap, rubble or Truck Shipping containers are all examples of this. You could take a old historic/fantasy fort and convert it adding modern touches ala Doomsday.

Fortified buildings are acceptable..so boarded and barricaded doors and windows are okay. Sandbagged walls or sand filled tyres are allowed. Walls or barricades between buildings or ruins are another idea.

For those road users fortified checkpoints are another option. You could add a toll on it too so travelers have to pay loot to the local gang, warlord or baron.

For nomads or travelers vehicles can be pulled into a circle. Amour on one facing and maybe some sort of cover for defenders standing on top of them is another idea. This can be done with a wagon train too. Great scope for using old cars as a wagon with an animal (or slaves) to pull it.

If you are thinking of building barricades I would make them at least 2” high for 28mm or 1” for 15mm. The reasons for this is that a solider can vault a 6 foot wall. Police Dogs and Wolves also have little problem leaping over walls of this height. So I guess a hungry mutie animal wont have too much trouble. As anyone who has played Metro 2033 will tell you!

Being Post Apoc you can go to town with watch towers, spikes and other defenses.

Some rules:

This is for fun...no prizes just the joy of a model and inspiration from the others taking part to help the project(s) along.

If natural resources or a quarry is available then they may be used. However this is post apoc so some touches will be needed to give it the look. This is to stop folks passing off their fantasy/historical/modern/sci-fi fort as Post Apoc. There are no rules about using one as a base for the project.

You can mix and match defensive fortifications. So over time you can build an array of different defensive stuff.

The Barricades or walls must be long enough to cross a table or surround a settlement or building (or a corner of a table). The reason is that they are pretty simple and easy to make. They must feature a entry/exit point. Up to you what you decide to do..a gate or leave it open...

Fortified Fox holes/craters are acceptable. But there must be more than one so to provide a line of defence. If using a crater some odds and ends around it to provide cover must be included.

Checkpoints must have some sort of speed trap and protection for the personnel manning the checkpoint from attackers.

Modular builds are allowed.

Have fun! I look forward to seeing what you build.

Still the same plan for me.... just no progress.... Been distracted by these 1/48th's; but also not entirely sure how to proceed on the actual details. Looking forward to seeing this container fort though!

Being laid-off and school winding down to a somewhat decent rate, I begun to work on projects condemned to the backburner. One of which is my challenge entry, which I have decided will either be a Gamma Knights fortified outpost (my own custom faction of medieval style PA crusaders) or a ramshackled raiders fort built off of an old oil tank.
