The 2012 Challenge!!!!

The 2012 Challenge is here...you asked for it...and you got it.....

As with all our challenges this is for fun only and to inspire each other on to make something cool for your collections. There are no prizes...it's a challenge not a competition. Hopefully you will have fun.

The 2012 challenge is to make a fortified Position. We realize that this may seem a bit daunting as it could in some cases be a large project. But a simple camp site with a barricade of some sort will do. As its Post Apoc it must be slightly Ramshackle recycling what is available.

The general idea is to keep something or someone out and to provide firing positions and cover for the defenders. You cant just go camping in the wastes and expect to live through the night!!

Barricades, bunkers, foxholes, trenches, watch towers, piled up rubble/dirt, old ruins barricaded, fortified buildings, old Walls, overturned cars, Truck Container box walls, overturned truck trailers and fortified truck trailers right up to fortresses built of scrap, rubble or Truck Shipping containers are all examples of this. You could take a old historic/fantasy fort and convert it adding modern touches ala Doomsday.

Fortified buildings are acceptable..so boarded and barricaded doors and windows are okay. Sandbagged walls or sand filled tyres are allowed. Walls or barricades between buildings or ruins are another idea.

For those road users fortified checkpoints are another option. You could add a toll on it too so travelers have to pay loot to the local gang, warlord or baron.

For nomads or travelers vehicles can be pulled into a circle. Amour on one facing and maybe some sort of cover for defenders standing on top of them is another idea. This can be done with a wagon train too. Great scope for using old cars as a wagon with an animal (or slaves) to pull it.

If you are thinking of building barricades I would make them at least 2” high for 28mm or 1” for 15mm. The reasons for this is that a solider can vault a 6 foot wall. Police Dogs and Wolves also have little problem leaping over walls of this height. So I guess a hungry mutie animal wont have too much trouble. As anyone who has played Metro 2033 will tell you!

Being Post Apoc you can go to town with watch towers, spikes and other defenses.

Some rules:

This is for fun...no prizes just the joy of a model and inspiration from the others taking part to help the project(s) along.

If natural resources or a quarry is available then they may be used. However this is post apoc so some touches will be needed to give it the look. This is to stop folks passing off their fantasy/historical/modern/sci-fi fort as Post Apoc. There are no rules about using one as a base for the project.

You can mix and match defensive fortifications. So over time you can build an array of different defensive stuff.

The Barricades or walls must be long enough to cross a table or surround a settlement or building (or a corner of a table). The reason is that they are pretty simple and easy to make. They must feature a entry/exit point. Up to you what you decide to do..a gate or leave it open...

Fortified Fox holes/craters are acceptable. But there must be more than one so to provide a line of defence. If using a crater some odds and ends around it to provide cover must be included.

Checkpoints must have some sort of speed trap and protection for the personnel manning the checkpoint from attackers.

Modular builds are allowed.

Have fun! I look forward to seeing what you build.

I have been thinking. I will remove the height restrictions on the walls and barricades. That way if some one wants a low set of barricades to fire over then they can make them. The same length restrictions will apply as it is simple and quick to make a barricade or wall.

I don't know if my projected modeling of Helios One in 15mm will qualify really but it's going to be a challenge to me in 2012.

I dont know TwogunBob. Will it have barricades? Will it have defensive positions? As I recall the one in FO NV had sandbags outside and fences all around. Not to mention booby traps, dogs and other defences. If you are going that route then I would say, yes its a defensive position.

I had a girlfriend named Inertia, never did a thing... kept a horrible house, dishes were always piled up in the sink when I'd go to take a piss...

Like the olden days, not last week, when a fortress was built, fortification within fortification was that rule of thumb. Always good to have a backup position.

My thinking for Saint Milla's fortification has been outer-wall, inter-wall, and fortified positions. Towers on the inter-wall with ramparts, outer wall has ramparts for walking sentries. All walls would have search lights. The complete build for Saint Milla City would be too big for a gaming table, and to build it would take away the possibilities. Though building sections of it for a challenge may be with in my meager skills.

I was thinking that. My idea is build a scrap or rubble style fort and then have outer high barricades for the outer defences/town. My main thinking is based around Vali's fortress.

Making a large set of walls for the outside is allowed. Lets face it most tables wont fit a scale sized fortification much larger than a small village. Well not in 28mm anyway! :D Most of the action will happen around the walls with bad uns trying to get in or breach the walls. Or on the other side as agents with ninja like skills scale the walls. That may make a good scenario.

The old junk store has spat out a 9mm thick 2 x 2 foot MDF board (salvaged from an old packing crate nearly 8 years back  ). I have some card tubes that I have stored from the bottles of malt whiskey I have received as gifts over the years (and they say its not easy to bribe the Warlord!! :D ) .The plan so far is to put an industrial style set of towers (they will be based on CDs so I can change the layout) with some walkways and other cover on them. Some Necromunda style junk bridges may link them. Around it will be walls of rubble or junk. They will have firing platforms and what not. Around the towers there will be enough room for a couple of vehicles and some of my shacks. There will be even more room if I decide to leave the towers out! :D

The outer walls will be made from scrap and junk. These will be modular. I plan that they can be set out in a number of ways and some of my existing defences will add to them. Inside this a small town or trading area can be set up.

If time allows I may also make up a set defensive dirt ramparts too (again modular). Or I may combine the scrap wall with the defensive ramparts...making life really difficult for Mr Raider.

The fun is that most of these is that they are modular and can be used in a variety of ways and settings.

Fine collection Warlord!

You've hit the nail on the head about modular builds and multi-use constructs. A keen piece of terrain shouldn't be only available to the PA game, but others too!

I'm going to steal Ross' correlated wall design for the outer perimeter wall, but reinforce it with debris so small arms fire won't penetrate (Heehee, I said Penetrate).

Although most of ones from my collection are found in my terrain threads, if anyone has any questions about them just ask.

I am sizing up my collection of junk piles (and pulling faces saying to my wife "SEE I told you I would use them!!" :D ). I am playing out what and how to build it....

You know what I find strange about my terrain projects. I rarely sketch them out before I start. I have an idea in my head and I go for it. A lot of the time it works out okay. The few times I have made sketches..they never get started. Maybe because they now live on paper and thus exist so I lose my creative flame?
