many post apoc games and films have neo nazi or fascist fundamentalists naturally the are great bad guys and villains for scenarios! also quite a plausible idea: 1. religion: quite a lot of religious text is about superiority, with records destroyed pieces could fall into the wrong,easily influenced hands  and if they mis read it or whatever you can get a group of angry raiders believing that only the strong will inherit (whats left) of the world...2.survival: desperate men i desperate times turn to people they dont fully understand ( he says, quoting batman: the dark knight!) just look at the rise of the nazi party after ww1 =( 3.superiority: a group of semi- mutants may belive themselves to be the next step of evolution homo supeior! so may decide its there duty to exterminate whats left of the human race. just in case anyones intrested? |

Another two: - A small group of petty thugs who consider the idea of representing such a widely despised ideology to be cool (like Modern Russian Neo-nazis) - An originally well meaning society with corruptable value system - patriotism becomes racism, a sense of national duty can lead to slavery to the state... Just look at Imperial Japan! They don't even need to be pure villians. Like you said, a society of desperate individuals clutching to some pillar of stability and order make for far more interesting possibilities than a group of 2D personalities who kill for the lulz and sport dodgy German accents. If a Neo-nazi group is anything like the real Nazis, they would be horrified at being called such. The real Nazis genuinly thought they were doing the right thing. So too would a neo-nazi society (excluding of course, the first one I mentioned). |

Religious texts don't need to be corrupted for a group of survivors to take it to literally. Just look at modern Christian and Islamic Fundamentalists (or any other Religion). Remove outside law and order and watch what happens. History is filled with examples of such things. There is also Doomsday cults that think they survived to continue the work started by God/Satan. Yep Satanists are another idea. One fun thing is to create new random cults worshipping new things such as the Children of Atom in Fallout 3. Who is to say that in the financial districts a new cult worshipping the Pound/Euro/Yen/Dollar won't emerge? Hell some might say that it already exists. In Metro 2033 the Nazis blame foreigners (non Russians) for the apocalypse and other problems. If you want a Nazi Group in your setting all you need is a copy of Mein Kamph to have survived. |

yeah there a quite a few its just nazis are baddies everyone loves to hate! and in reply to Gasmasked Mook your right the nazis thought they were making the world a better place and helping people so the fine line between "good and bad" just depends on who you ask... and viking62 hit the nail on the head communism is and started off as areally good idea but ironically just made people less equal... ideas are silly...

Another factor boosting Nazi-esque ideologies would be that in a PA world there is the potential that there might be some truth to some of their beliefs. Outsiders usually ARE a great threat to the community, some forms of mutations (the ones weakening the poor guy) ARE a potentially hazardous drain on the community's resources, free mixing of mutated and non-mutated people IS a threat to the human gene pool - you get the idea. It's the thing I like about PA-settings - many villainous groups do raise the sticky question of whether - considering the scenario - they might not have a valid point somewhere. As for the ideology: Inspiration here is quite easy to find! Just take any politicial and/or religious fringe group, take a representative text from said group and now imagine a guy with know contextual knowledge whatsoever and an unhealthy adoration for the ancestors' wisdom reading it. He not only would take it literally but he also probably would think it's pure distilled truth, coming from people who knew pretty much everything and could do miracles with their knowledge. THAT is sccray indeed. As an example I built a group of radical feminists for my PA setting. Just read a bit into the drivel of Valerie Solanas or Mary Daly - both are of the opinion that us guys are pretty much Satan incarnate and the world would be better of if women just genocided the bejeezus out of us. Now when we read that, we recognize it as what it is: Insane drivel. But if a woman who has no understanding of our world read it... Hell, it's almost as if Solanas had easy convertability for wargaming uses in mind, when she came up with the S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto! The same principle would work with well with right-wing nutjobs of any kind, fundamentalists, vegans, etc, etc... Just forget that you know anything about our world and start reading

One modern faction that would die off is the Health Nazis....they would starve in the wastes!  Besides you wouldn't need to exercise like modern folk...running from Bandits, Raiders and Mutants would take care of that.

You could try some other cult ideas. How about a group that finds a copy of Lord of the Rings and thinks its ancient history? As such it builds its new society based on that. It may even be considers sacred texts. You can do it with any work of fiction. |

I don't think PA Nazi types would eventually be identified as Nazis; too much baggage attached to the moniker. Immediate survivors of the apocalypse wouldn't take kindly to swastika toting thugs; as a matter of survival. Any overt attempt would be met with force. Warlords might prosper for a bit, but would fall under the weight of the inefficiency of a dictatorship, eventually. Read pop culture to find any number of bad outcomes from being a PA Nazi warlord. In the end, the ideas (uber-mench, sub humans, genetic superiority, etc) would be wrapped up in a much more palatable form. People looking for stability would flock to a charismatic leader type that could provide security and a hot plate of food. Things would be "better" under this leader, and the dictatorial side of the regime would come about through a slow boil process. Men like Hilter are out there, and the "smart" one would learn from his mistake in the ashes of a world destroyed. In the end, the ideas of a state like America, no matter how lofty, are an anomaly in world history. In a post apoc world chances are you'll see the reemergence of dictatorial states based mostly on national socialism and dictatorial communism; two genies that can't be put back into the bottle they came from and will destroy all other governments they come in contact with. Just my ramblings, you mileage may vary. |

Nazis are readily recognizable. They make great villains, as you don't have to explain their motivations. Just show an SS officer with a party armband and damn near everyone knows what's going on. Nazis are also one of the few groups whose members you can graphically slaughter onscreen in droves and no one whines about it. They instill fear in some, hatred in others, yet they always seem for have enough supporters to make the rest of the world nervous.
