After watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvveoQRVBxY&feature=share and having heard of similar stories, it does make me wonder what else might be lurking in bogs/lakes etc; and what could be 're-furnished' following an apocalypse. IIRC we've already talked about the possibility of looting museums for vehicles (armoured and otherwise) so this gives another option of fielding long out of date equipment! |

Good find. Recently there was a T34 pulled out a lake in Finland. Excellent condition just needed a once over to make it road worthy. Even if the main armament is knackered there isnt much out there to stop you rolling over every one! |

Thats so cool! Didnt you just dream of finding something like that as a boy? There was a series on a Saturday morning called Danger Island set on a Pacific Island where they found an old Japanese WW2 position with all their kit. Then there was that book The Machinegunners where they recovered a machinegun from a downed german bomber and used it to shoot down another german plane. Meh! Hauling a tank out of the mud in that sort of condition. WOW. |

Recently they have taken a .30 cal from a crashed WW2 Spitfire and had it firing. I have also heard of working .30 and .50 cals recovered from WW2 bomber crash sites. Of course to find these gems you need to know where to dig!

I have a lucky bullet. A .303 British from WW1 A mate bought it back as a dug relic along with others from a family holiday in the Somme region. I was about 12. I was doing all sorts to it trying to pull the bullet and get at the cordite so we could use it to blow stuff up. Whacking it, yanking it with pliers, you name it. Got there eventually. Cordite was viable and we had lots of fun with the limited supplies we had. Got arrested but hey that was when the police would clip your ear and tell your dad. Was a while later I realised the Cap in the end was viable too and I'd being whacking a live round. I've thought about having my name engraved on it. Then I'd have the bullet with my name on it and nobody else would! |

Just goes to show how well stuff lasts! I think I've already said about my mate at school who found his Great Grandad's old Sten gun in one of the outbuildings on his farm. Ggrandad had been in the home guard and 'forgot' to hand it in. So he had a (slightly rusty) fully opperational sten & 2 spare magazines, although no ammunition. I've no idea what happeend to it in the end, as I drifted away from the friend. |

Cool. A air raider squadron! Or maybe a similar concept to the Boomers in Fallout New Vegas.

That's an old story. The lost Squadron included Ice Maiden a Lockheed Lightning that was hundreds of feet deep in ice. Ice Maiden was "restored" to flying condition. Apart from the lightnings everything else was scrap. The lightnings were scrap too but ware so valuable one was recovered and "restored" there is a big debate of how much of a given aircraft has to be original to be considered "restored" versus a replica aircraft. However there is rumour of a squadron of Mustangs still in their crates that was pushed off the deck of a ship in a hurry in the Pacific somewhere. My Fluff also has a powerful faction of ex RAF thet emerged from a bunker. They have the Battle of Britain Memorial flight which is a level of tech they can sustain. |

There are a few flying spitfires and hurricanes in the flight. I think there is only one Lancaster flying though. I am not sure about the operational status of the aircraft's weaponry. The big problem would be keeping those Merlins running and making prop blades. I think there is a Fairy Swordfish in the flight now. |

Well you see they have four Merlins and only need two on the Lancaster to drop the chemical payload. They aren't flying them but they could. Would be considered a deterrent if they didn't have expansionist tendencies. |

My granddad who was in the British Army in Burma in WW2 told me that when they captured japanese weaponry they drew lots to see who would get it, he once got a Tanto but later came down with fever and all of his pack and equipment were lost. Anyways on the way back to England whilst they were in the channel word got around that the government were going to confiscate all of the samurai swords etc from the soldiers, the soldiers were at this stage pretty annoyed with the English government and gave them the big middle finger by dropping all of the swords overboard into the channel. He never said whether the rumour was true or not (about the confiscation) and who knows what % of the swords were the quick stamped ones and how many were hundreds of years old, either way its a shame they went into the water.
