Inspired by Danny, and by some of my previous musings, I decided to follow suit and start up my own fluff thread for my retro British apocalyspe games. the map is a bit anachronisitc, as it is modern... but I don't things have changed too much (well, there's an extra bridge into Wales, and probably a few more bits of motorway). I'll carry on adding to it over time. First, a general introduction....

We all knew that an apocalypse was possible. We all knew how it would happen, and we were as prepared as we could be. Except we were all wrong. The apocalypse did come - but not how we expected. It wasn't a nuclear exchange between NATO and the USSR, but something quite unexpected. In the early winter of 1979 a large meteorite shower passed through the solar system, and made very pretty shooting stars as they burned up on the atmosphere. No one thought anything more of it, until a year or two later when strange things began to occur: virulent new diseases, rumours of new species of strange looking plants, and bizarre new creatures. The newspapers blamed it all on the soviets, and they blamed it all on us. But it was that meteorite shower that was really to blame - it had deposited millions of alien spores into our atmosphere, and sealed our fate.... although we didn't know that until much later.

By 1981 the world was a mess - the number of spores still in the atmosphere had changed the climate slighty, making the world a might colder; grass and feed stuffs were dieing from the change in climate and an alien virus and food shortages had begun to really kick in. Then the balance was tipped by a new virus - no one knew where it started, and it was a world wide pandemic within 2 weeks. Fatality rates were astronomically high. In an attempt to control the spread, nuclear and chemical weapons were used by governments to try and cull the most effected regions - Manchester was VX gased, Birmingham and London targeted by nuclear weapons., Bristol carpet bombed. The list rolls on. 'Surgical' strikes weren't just limited to their own countries, but war never fully developed - there was no longer the manpower left to instigate it. The world settled into silence, and the alien's foot hold grew.

It's now 1987, and mankind still survives. Just. The global population of close to 5 billion has been cut down to a fraction of its former number. Society has been plunged back into a new dark age, with people fighting for the few remaining patches of fertile land and resources, whilst evading the twisted monstrosities which lurk in the dark places of the world.

I was actually thinking of either a mountain man type with a long barreled musket, or maybe a guy in chainmail... not entirely sure yet. Should be an interesting force (and a good use for stray frontiersmen and dark age characters) as making all their own ammo they won't need to take ammo checks.... Then again, most weapons will take a turn to reload!

TURNSTILE
Although built as the Goverments 'home out of london', Turnstile was never fully occupied during the lead up to the End; and the trains containing the highest ranking goverment staff never made the trip across country (although it is unclear precisely what happened to them). A bank bench cabinet minister called Fairclough ended up taking control, and he has been governing ever since. The original civil defence plan was for the country to break down into a range of fudal styled 'lords' who organised the general populace and reported to the 'king' of government. Fairclough has endevoured to put this plan into effect, but the level of disorganisation and disruption following the End stopped it ever being fully achieved. Instead of managing a range of sub-lords, Turnstile is no better off than most of its peers. Up until recently, it has been able to survive off the stored food, but now as its slowly expanding population is requiring more resources, it is starting to make major ripples in the distribution of power in the region, swaying opinion where it can and eliminating opposition where it cannot...

Cheddar Cavemen
People have lived in the caves of Cheddar Gorge since the earliest times - and when there were fears about the End, it seemed an obvious place to shelter. It started with only a few extended families here and there, but the numbers have grown to a reasonable size. Although there is not much in the way of agricultral potential within the gorge itself, the surrounding hills more than make up for it, as does the wide range of local wildlife. Unfortuneatly for the cave dwellers, they are on the main path between the Jailers and the Winscombe protectorate, and as such suffer a large number of raids.

Scav Town
Scav town is a grotty collection of shanties on the outskirts of the ruins of Bristol. Not the safest place to be, as after the goverment carpet bombed it, the ruins proved an excellet breeding ground for monsters and killer viruses. A direct hit on the university chemical store has also led to a significant quantity of hazardous chemicals being released, which have contaminated the ground water. Still, the scavengers live here, and venture into scav town to trade what they find for food, medicine and ammunition. Often travelling merchants will stop to stock up on goods. There is no-one in charge of scav town, and no defence force - the scavs just wrap up their finds and disapear into the ruins if anyone threatens a raid.

Rubble raiders
The remnants of a former street gang, the rubble raiders settled into a life of scavenging; but where as most bands of scavengers working the remains of Bristol are fairly passive and like to keep out of the way of trouble, the rubble raiders take a more pro-active approach… afterall, if you’re looting corpses, it’s still scavenging… and why should it make any difference if you helped create said corpses…. That said, the rubble raiders operate in a fairly confirmed area and only pick on other groups in what they consider to be there ‘turf’, and will usually stick to their word. As such, they are a lot more respected by other neighbouring factions than the jailers or other groups of wandering bandits and yobs.

Brent knoll hill fort
Although the hill fort ontop of Brent knoll had been deserted for the previous one and a half thousand years, changing times and climates call for changing measures. With the Somerset levels starting to flood more and revert to marsh, the knoll is once more becoming an island. Although here is some space for growing crops ontop of the hill, most of its food comes from the developing wetlands around its base. The fort only has a small population, but they have shown considerable courage and initiative in fending off several raider attacks. Links between the protectorate and the knoll started off through trade, grew into a friendship and have recently developed into a fully blown integration between the two (nicknamed the ‘alliance’). Since this, the protectorate has added several additional defences and a small standing garrison to the knoll.
