The World Around Vali's Fortress... I am planning a campaign based around Vali's Fortress. For those that don't know Vali's Fortress is in the northern parts of the Britannia wastes. Since the Bunker City got nuked the wastes have become more dangerous. The Fortress was built a year or two after the end when the skies were still dark. Some engineer found a bull dozer and other machines. The Fortress is a stopping point for many moving across the wastes. This thread will include maps and background details. They are taken from a Wanderer from Vali's Fortress known as Sham. The maps will be updated as time goes on. Yer ol Warlord has gone nuts. Firstly a note on Direction.... Directions:- Rise (East), Fall (West), Dark (North), Heat (South) Compasses no longer work on the world. The Nuclear assault has caused damage to the world’s magnetic fluxes. Wastelanders in different places have different names for the directions. Peoples around Vali’s Fortress use Rise for the direction the sun rises (East), Fall - for the direction the sun sets (West), Dark - The direction that the Darkness comes from in Winter (North), Heat - the warmer areas of the world lie in this direction (South). Are your ready for more? Edited by mattblackgod, Nov 20 2011, 11:01 PM.

Some may recognise similarities to certain places and groups in the real world....this is purely coincidental...honest! Airbase (Dark): In the Darkwards side of the Once Was City ruins lies a old Military airbase. It was hit pretty hard during the attacks on the world. Most useful items have long since been looted but the area is great for scrap. Who knows digging through the rubble you may find some old world treasures or supplies. This area is haunted by wild dogs and mutant rats preventing any faction from taking control of the airbase and utilizing the airfields for crops. Almond Stead: Almond Stead is a small fortified farm roughly Heat -Risewards (SE) of Vali’s fortress. Almond Stead grows various crops. The main crop of the stead is Almonds which grow in their orchard. Analfield: Analfield is a small ramshackle village made up of shanties and shacks in the Once Was City ruins. Or is it me effecting the forum?? I used a Mac but I have done a similar thing with a Windows machine. The process of the maps started by going onto Google Maps. Find a map of an area you want to use. Then print it to PDF (you may need a PDF printing program there are loads free out there). Now you have a nice PDF document. Cut the map out and paste it into paint. I altered the waterlines, deleted the map details I wasn't interested in and used Paint to add new details. I have found that Photoshop or similar can help in putting other details on such a map icons. I haven't gotten to this yet. I ran out of patience.

I'm surprised that none mentioned the Mighty Pirate Captain "Dik Kream" and his ship full of seamen! The beauty lies in the details Danny! Considering too that you live in the Pre-PA area you get the opportunity to look at a structure, or a building and add it to your grand designs. |

Danny, What general sizes are the populations for the various groups? Are you leaving that element open for gaming purposes? The reason I ask is after reading this topic it sparked a honing of my own Saint Milla and surrounding enclaves, tribes and bands. St. Milla will have one Warlord with three Gang leaders loyal to him. All four have Gangs loyal to them extensively. Each having a influence on different commodities. All responsible for the upkeep and protection of the residents of St. Milla, and the residents pay a tax for that protection. I figure maybe around 50 gangers providing services to about a 1000 individuals broken down to 400 families and the odd sort. Not all these folk live in St. Milla but close enough during raiding season or war they can seek shelter of St. Milla. These are not figures written in stone, but a general idea. I guesstimate the nearest settlement to be twenty miles away. The other communities are ran by different groups and each having their own methods of rules. Which of course causes conflicts between them and with St. Milla. In drought season there are raids, food shortages there are raids. They also have little festivals, games of some sort. At times they gather together for mutual protection to fight off bigger threats from up the road be it renegades, mutants, nomads, cannibals, or a hoard of Zombie Vaccuum Salesmen. In all this mix I really only have an interest in the Tinker's Damned Gang. All else is window dressing, a dog and pony show. The timeline is flexible for telling of the PC's adventures in the Wastelands. My games are about the Tinker PC who can be just starting out as a Lone Trader selling wares to different groups trying to make a profit, or as a Gang leader in trouble with the Warlord over a pair of dirty Lucky Socks. All played solo, all with I hope a reasonable story to tell. Edited by tinker, Nov 23 2011, 07:15 AM.

Sounds a good background Tinker and set up. FF this is purely for my own setting but if it inspires I would like to see what you have (fnnurrrk!). I am open to ideas on this setting as I do have a area of 150 x 150 miles to game in. I plan to add bits as Vail's Crew go on missions and explore the area more. Vali's Fortress has a handful of characters, around 30 Mercenaries and around 70 assorted bods who provide services and other jobs. In all the total population is around 120 to 130. Vali's is more of a trading stop and safe house. As such traders going to get fish from Sequeena or crops from Gladys town often stop there. I will be using Vali's as the centre of the campaign. Sequeena is a fishing Village with a population of around 100. Many of them may be at sea so the population can drop as low as 30. Dik Kreem has two loyal pirate crews. I am surprised that no one noticed that he is based in a town called Hardon. Schmittville is ruled by Tobais Schimtt. He keeps around 8 gangs not including his force of inquisitors and his own gang. One of these gangs is a gang of Engineers who keep the place ticking over. All are loyal only because he has anyone who disagrees with him horribly executed. Schmittville has a population of around 400. They like using slaves here. Noggsie - population unknown but is thought that the mutie men breed at high rates than norms. Glayds town has two loyal gangs - The Toffees and Blue noses. The general population is around 100. They farm and trade what they can. Analfield has only one gang that is like a extended family. No real numbers on its population but for now its thought to be around 100. Skrap Wastes/Town has 8 gangs all loyal to Marco. As they are spread out across the Skrap Lands (Skrap Town, Rads tower (to be added), Comms Mast, Depressing Ruins and Iron Tower) the actual population is unknown. Each is a small base. The population of the Skrap Lands is around 500. There may be more souls surviving in the Iron Tower ruins. Almond Stead is a small farm of about 15 folks. Colon - no numbers. No one goes there as folks there are a$$holes! Copperhead and Grok field are both unknown as those buggers liver underground. Vault 99 - think FO style vault. Approx 160 souls in there. Its getting cramped. Lank has 3 villages and a population of approx. 400 in total. The Valleys they live in makes them self sufficient. Runkorn is a small village of about 50 souls. The Red Light - not more than 30 although numbers can swell (no pun intended) from "visitors". No figures on Moudly, Mutant Bottom, Trashford, Mutiechester or Nutsac yet. We just know folks come from there but we dont know anything about them. |

Have you discussed any of these town names with your missus just for reaction sake? ![]() I have a difficult time with deciding on population numbers because if they're too high it appears like a recovery has taken hold. I really want to keep the numbers fairly lean... Oh well, there is always War, Famine, Pestilence, and Disease to help balance things back nicely to the brink again. And if those four guys can't get the job done I can always count on manual override switch, or an eraser! |

That works too. I see many places attracting wastelanders with offers of work for food/shelter. But add to that those leaving due to not liking the place/work, falling foul of the authorities (you can be inventive with the laws), getting into fights with locals (are you looking at my Bird?), industrial accidents, industrial diseases, certain social diseases, the murder and theft civilisation attracts its easy to restrict numbers. Add to that mix mutated Flu and common cold strains, mutant beasts, ghouls and cannibals to keep things low. Oh and don't forget the most valuable asset to background creation...the Raiders. The missus knows about Colon and Nutsac. She laughed her head off! Hardon is actually a place in Flintshire, or thats how it is pronounced locally, or thats what the locals told me when I worked there. It is spelt Hawarden.
