This crew is dragging me deeper into the abyss. You are leading me to a place that usually ends up with unfulfilled dreams and remorse, as I gaze upon half finished terrain and unpainted minis sitting on my shelves. Not this time I say! You shall not be the cause of yet another half finished project. Since I've gone so far down this dark path already, turning back and running screaming away is not an option. So, how do I keep you all from leading me, yet again to ruin? Organization and planning, that's how. Add in a good dose of narcissistic ego, and I think I have a workable motivation to see this thing through. To that end, I've started this thread to log my progress on gathering all the items needed to put down a complete, playable PA table. I'll lay out my goals, refine them, through accepted suggestions and trial and error and post piccies of my progress. With luck the peer pressure of people watching me, and ego not wanting to fail in public will see me through this dark and twisted path you've set me on. So, enjoy...I hope you all choke on it

No that that is out of the way, where to start. I guess I need to set down goals. Here is what I want/need to do to complete this project: 1) Table/ table covering. I have 2 options. No. 1 is to use pink foam to build a couple of 4x4 pieces that I can use for the table top. The up side is that I can add 3-d detail into it like canals ravines and craters. It can be double sided giving me 2 separate types of ground o play on; urban and arid in this case. Idea No. 2 is to use a ground cloth/mat. The up side of this is storability and transportability. The foam boards would take up a lot of space, where a ground cloths doesn't. Plus the cost. I can make 2 separate ground cloths for the price of the foam boards. I think I'll leave this decision for later. 2) What sort of terrain do I need. This one is easy, I am going to build the following, one area at a time:
3) Battle field bits, pieces and doo-dads - All those bits of detritus that give the table character and places for figs to hide. I think that covers it, giving me some goals to shoot for. I have actually started building the blasted urban ruins, and will post some pics shortly. |

As stated, I've started on the Blasted ruins area. I started with a laser cut foam core 6 story building from Gamecraft. With shipping it cost me $20. It might seem a little steep in price, unless you've ever build ruins from foam core. For me the money spent was worth it. I'll most likely post a review of this item in the near future. Here is is laid out on the table.![]() I then took and drew out my ruins and started cutting. I numbered the pieces, so they didn't get mixed up in the pile. In the end, I had very little in the way of unusable scrap material. ![]() After I had the basic shapes cut out, I shaped them to look more like broken concrete and such. I ended up with 13 pieces total; 9 corners and 4 standing walls: ![]() Here's a close up of some of the corner pieces in various stages:

Nice start. The thing with those Buildings is that they save you a ton of time in planning and cutting. Start collecting scrap items for building ruins and shanties. |

Worked on several pieces yesterday, and got 5 of them ready for painting. These 4 stand alone walls and one corner piece are mounted on CDs I used pink foam on a couple of them, in order to give the ground level wall more height. Detailing is done with various strips of ceral box, straws, hunks of foam-core and pink foam, and bits of wire. In answer to Mr. Clean's question The miniatures in the photos give a good sense of how tall the levels in the Gamecraft building are. ![]() ![]()

You know, I love the pieces that are chocked full of detail. I mean oozing character because of it. When you get down to it, though, pieces like that are almost impossible to game on in any meaningful manner. All the details just seem to get in the way of miniature placement. |
