Terrain on the very cheap!

I need more terrain, lots! Money is very scarce these days so I can't really afford to buy anything, BUT I had an inspirational idea.

What if I put some of all those yoghurt pots I go through to some good use? I am currently trying to make some kind of watertower and trying out an idea to cut one into four parts to become Strangle Vines (or other nasty vegetation). We'll see if it works. Maybe a few oddshaped huts could be made as well...

I am in the same camp. The only bought terrain I have was bargain stuff or gifts.

Go for it. Let's see what you make. Coffee mate cans are good too.

I gave it a go, my first "scratchbuilt" terrain  .

Made it very easy for myself, and it won't win any prizes BUT it'll do me for my games. These are supposed to be nasty vegetation markers of some kind (Strangle Vines or Slayer Trees, possibly Poisonous Bushes etc.) Took a small yoghurt pot, cut it in four pieces, slapped primer on and dressed it with green flock and some thread! Job done.

Great stuff. How about a brown wash to finish off the vines? Or would it make them look too much like ropes?

In the deathlands novels there are small over grown looking hills that when stood on produce vines that drag victims into a gaping maw. It is a nasty mutant plant.

Had some more ideas: took a bottlecap from the little ones waterbottles (like Fruit Shoot but water, apparently that juice is rubbish!), stood it in a milkbottle cap/ Lucozade (whatever fits) and then turn it upside down (big end at top). When primed and "flocked" they could become Giant Mushrooms/ bushes or such. Just need a few more and spray paint (ran out when priming the last batch :(|droopy: ).

Also got hold of two 2'x3' sheets from work, blue on one side and white on the other. Very simple and handy for a waterboard or a snowboard, just turn them over! Enough to make a 4'x3' table.

@Danny: due to the very fragile nature of those pieces I don't want to mess around with them more than I have to. In hindsight I probably should've washed the thread, but I wanted to see if it would work in the first place, I can always make more, got yoghurt pots up my yazoo :(|laugh: .

The "Caps to trees scheme" didn't work, couldn't get the glue to stick (plastic is slippery stuff). But more ideas have appeared, in the process of making crater/ toxic puddle out of plastic lids, have basecoated them currently, just gonna paint them in some suitable colours and maybe put some bits in it, we'll see how they turn out.

Made some surrogates for stone walls out of packing foam, just took a pair of scissors and cut to size, the minis are Hasslefree's Bubba and Reaper Tyrone for an idea of how they compare. I'm not too bothered with exactly to scale, just more stuff to put on the table :) .

Also took pictures of the two sheets I got from work, approx 2'x3' each, blue on one side and white actually on the other (photo looks yellow). Very quick dressing for a winter or water board.

Glue a little flock or oregano, then paint green. ;)

Thanks for the suggestion Tink and Ross :(|thumbup: , think I'll make a compromise as I've got 8 of them. Leave half as they are and do the other half as hedges!

Dumpster diving should be an Olympic Event  ! Thanks for the suggestion Inky :(|thumbup:

In the meantime, this is how the Toxic Puddle and Crater turned out. Nothing special, but as usual, enough for my needs.

Although this will take a while to dry... mix a generous helping of PVA with neon green, just a brush full of paint, and then pour (or mix in the lid) and set out to dry. The PVA dries clear so it will add a quality of depth to the "Tox Pool".

I'll make one tonight and post after it dries.

Sounds good.

Just do a little experimental setup... see if it works out.
