Now the painting stage comes. First of all I need to prime the vehicle. I put it for half an hour into a cooking pot with hot water and some Fairy dish washing detergent - this degreased my model. After that I covered all metal parts with highly dilluted Tamiya surface primer. I used white liquid primer and excellent (though rather smelly) Tamiya lacquer thinner. The layer of primer was very thin but it served well as a base for first layer of paint. I usually put some dark color on my models as a first layer. This helps to accentuate details and to make some pre-shading. I mixed Vallejo Black and Vallejo USA Olive Drab in a 60 to 40 ratio, put a few drops of W&N acrilyc flow improver and highly dilluted all this stuff with vodka. After that I loaded this complicated mixture into my airbrush and put two very thin layers on my model.

As for drinks, I prefer French red wine? but I must admit vodka is a perfect thinner for acrilycs. ;) ;)

Painting a base coat is, in my opinion, one the most difficult stages. The problem is that it isn't a very creative (and often is rather boring) work, but it urges for careful and responsible approach. A base coat is a backbone of the whole project, and messing this stage means your project will come out hampbacked.
I was planning to use negative and positive paint chips techniques as primary weathering technique, so I decided to paint some parts of my model in various dark brown and rust colors using tempera and some parts in various green, light blue, light ochre and white colors using acrylics. Tempera-painted areas are intended for negative chips and acrylic-painted areas are intended for positive chips. Internal part of the truck's body and lower part of the truck were painted by acrylics via airbrush.
The most interesting thing happened when I was diligently working with my brush covering unpainted areas inch by inch. I thought - why not to break monotonous colors with some kind of filters. Usually I apply filters based on oil colors, but this time I tried highly dilluted tempera. Surprisingly, it worked better than I'd expected. It came out that tempera has its own advantages: rough texture after drying (which is perfect for imitating dusty-dirty-rusty surfaces), it can be controlled during drying much better than acrylics and it dries practically without the so-called tide marks and the final result can be easily corrected with a clean brush (the same isn't true for acrylics). I've practiced several methods of applying tempera filters: put highly dilluted mixture right on the surface, put some water on the surface and befor water dries dillute tiny amounts of paint of different colors, etc. and was quite content with results.
The final thing on this stage was to put some kind of insignia on the vehicle. After some thoughts I decided to draw a dice and a short but succint motto. Yes, every day life in Wastelands is really a kind of gamble, and the one with the bigger gun has an extra dice in his hand. :)
