The Independents Not everyone in 2072's Stalingrad belongs to one faction or the other. While belonging to a larger group gives the survivor the safety of numbers and the strength of an ideology, it also limits one's freedom - even if the faction at hand is the anarchist Chornaya Svoboda. For this reason, some people wander among the ruins alone, or in small groups, taking their chances on their own. These individuals are commonly called the Independents: scavengers, salvagers, petty traders, small-time crooks, hapless adventurers, all of which strike out on their own or with their few friends. Most have a weapon of some sort and, in many cases, an adequate gas mask; but in many cases their appearance is still ragged.
