It just gets better and better!

I feel your pain about time. Hopefully once the silly day is passed you may get more time on the project.

I've posted another PA terrain update on my blog. Nothing much compared to a lot of what has been posted around here lately, but at least i finally got some paint on the thing.

Excellent!!

Interesting how I had given consideration, and even made comment about a town built up on a fallen section of an overpass to only know seeing a real possibility of it by your work on this particular project!

Whao! This project is seriously unbalancing my temperance. I've been reducing my game board sizes, but you work is giving me ideas.

I like what you're doing with digging into the base for the craters. I've thought about doing something similar for subway tunnel entrances...

Thanks for all of the kind comments and encouragement.

Ninjamonkey73, The subway idea is cool. Would you actually make accessable tunnel sections, or just the entrances? Tunnels could be really cool, but involve a ton of work. Either way, neat idea.

Tinker, I've been thinking about how to use the highway and overpass. The idea crossed my mind to extend the highway longways on the table to use as a sort of Hadrian's Wall maybe for an Origins event. There could be a series of fortifications, blockhouses sort of like mile castles, etc. The more immediate idea includes a barricade for under the overpass with a series of interchangeable shanties and huts for use under on on top of the overpass. Also an observation tower for use on top of the overpass or highway. Unfortunately the ideas are more plentiful than the time to build them.

Originally, I had planned to do the city block sections as 2'x2' modules with free-standing ruined buildings and various constructs that would set on top of them. The 2'x2' would be pretty level finished surfaces that could be freestanding on their own as well.

Then I got to thinking about how much waste there was in not using the base layer of foam more than just for the few craters, and I had a lightbulb moment. One of the things that I regretted is that I wouldn't be using the basement levels of buildings, especially as I had intended to build the house that I grew up in that had underground passages to adjacent buildings. The house was built during prohibition and had things like false fireplaces with storage racks in the "chimney" for bottles of booze, and escape routes from the basement that tunneled into other buildings. Cool place to grow up.

Anyway, My lightbulb moment simply invovled a minor redesign that would include making a 1 foot square foam panel system within the cityblocks, with buildings including basements/foundations, below grade, or semi-recessed entrances incorporated into the base level of foam. It may not seem like a big deal, but it will allow a lot more realism in the construction and appearence of buildings and give another layer of stuff to deal with in the games. For example, I had intended to make a model of my current house half blown away and callapsing into rubble. Now I can build that house that way, but set it on a foundation that is recessed into the foam, that allows the basement (with 2 foot thick stone walls) to be turned into a bunker for a gang of survivors. In the original design, the basement level would have just been ignored.

I'm also going to take out a foot of dead space immediately adjacent to the highway and shift the city block grid one foot towards the highway. This will allow for another row of buildings on allong the street on the opposite end of the table from the highway.

The journey continues.
