Me again. There's something that has been niggling at me and that is does anyone know or perhaps already made their own post apocalyptic map? I would like that to be the basis of my wargames (a la Fallout) the game I am designing has more of an RPG flavour where a gang of survivors scour the wastes (so more like the desert rangers from the original wastelands i guess, who incidentaly will be featuring in the game...but that's another story!). I have tried all sorts of methods but i cannot get them to look right. I'd ideally use a physical map of an area minus the place names...etc. I also want it to look a little weathered. The idea being i can have two copies. A complete one for me (the GM) and a player version which has the locations added as they explore. Any links, ideas will be much appreciated. I have so many ideas for creatures, people, factions...etc and I think once I have a map I can start to 'build my world' as it were. Edited by Leonard Krieg, Nov 11 2010, 05:22 PM.

This might be of some use, especially the city/town builder. Its meant for fantasy rpgs but.... Gozzy's Cartographic Emporium *EDIT* Crap. The city builder utility seems to be AWOL.... or (more likely) I've got the wrong site. I'll see if I can track it down. Edited by Sykoholic, Nov 11 2010, 05:39 PM.

another idea is that depending on the technology level you could make a rough geological map using pencil and paper then in apocesque writing you can write names and X's where places are. and yes i just made a new word, three more till i make my quota for the day

Huzzah! I have found a map perfect for my game. Just typed in 'blank physical map' into google and voila, one of the was perfect. What I like about it most is I have no idea where it is (and don't want to know -because it's my wasteland now!!) Check it out: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e9/Bretagne_region_relief_location_map.jpg It is to a good scale too. Around 80km wide per grid square. Feel free to use it if you need to All I have to do now is fill it with locations -not as easy as it sounds... any thoughts? Once its finished i'll post the finished product. Also I thought this map helped illustrate a fractured landscape. Be good in a gang/territory driven campaign http://mapsof.net/uploads/static-maps/blank_map_turkey_provinces.png Lastly try these pics from wikia commons. They're spot on! http://www.google.co.uk/images?q=blank+physical+map&um=1&hl=en&rlz=1I7GGLL_en-GB&tbs=isch:1&ei=M_rcTNPMDYqLhQflyMXYDA&sa=N&start=180&ndsp=20 |

It's the Bretagne (Brittany), France. Maybe you can find some more help or inspiration here: http://www.apocalypticpost.com/2009/07/post-apocalyptic-maps.html http://wiki.parpg.net/Map_editor_tutorial http://www.degenesis.de/images/data_kartenwerk_1.jpg |

Drop it into Paint... flip, rotate, stretch , and make it your own. Of the grouping I, too, liked the counties of Turkey... it's also seasonal theme here in the US. |

Good stuff. I tried digital maps but go bored quickly with the amount of time it takes. MBW map is on a sheet of A4 graph paper showing the main world map (just where all the different wastelands and zones are) and each one is then on its own sheet of A4 graph paper. All drawn by hand. I always liked the Nuke Ren maps.. Nuke Ren map |

Another option would be to give your players a "real world" map of an area. In a PA setting, the map would be from before the "disaster" and therefor outdated and inaccurate. |

It reminds me of what I did for my local Babylons Burning campaign years back. I got a street/city map of Liverpool then added new details such as Rubble zones, faction turf, the raised water levels for the river, flooded zones.... I may revive it as a basis for one of my ruined cities. I was thinking of doing something similar for the Nu-Manhattan ruins...using a NYC map! Or possibly the Nu-London ruins with a London map. Another idea is to use a cheap road atlas (or use a old one when you replace it) and do a whole country or state. |

There's an seed of an idea in that Danny. Find the grittiest street map possible, or age one with tea, fire, tearing, and tape... then as Danny suggest redraw sections of the map as would be do by a scout on a recon mission, place little notes about possible mutant areas, zombie sightings fuel, fresh water, irradiated water, tribes, cars ...etc.. I like this enough for me to use it. Same can be used on a county map, or state map. |

That was my plan, to build a whole city overview to run campaigns from. A bit of local knowledge mixed with a random occurrence table could make a great scouting and scavenging campaign for say a newly opened vault. |

I am using 1:50 000 for larger cities and local districts and 1:18,000 (3.5 inches = 1 mile) for smaller cities. The city map ones are good as they usually have a 1:9000 (7 inches = 1 mile) insert for the city centre. I have always been a map nut and I used to pick one up from every place I visited (maps on phones have taken over!). I just found a 11 year old street map of Chester and a street map book of the Flintshire villages in North Wales. As these babies are out of date I will be using them for MBW. Given the history of MBW (nuked to hell) should I put the water levels raised or lowered? I also have my Babylon's Burning map of Liverpool! I am tempted to run a few campaigns here!

Just out of curiousity, why would having been nuked cause the area's water level to rise/lower? |

It could be to do with the Nuclear Winter that follows causing further environmental damage. Melting ice caps from higher temperatures. Or in the case of the freeze scenario, when the Nuke Winter ends the sea levels have dropped as the Polar Ice Caps thicken and expand. Who knows what other problems may follow such a war? Volcanoes erupting, earthquakes and Tsunami are all possibilities. They happened on MBW at any rate. I think there is a similar background in the Deathlands Novels. Massive earthquakes and volcanic activity followed the Nuke War. Sea levels rose and California broke away from the N. American mainland and formed a series of Islands. Meanwhile in other places new Mountain Ranges where born. |

Nuclear Winter = Temperature Drop = Polar Icecaps Expand = Sea Level Change Hadn't considered that. Duh!
