Hi all, I'm about to embark on a new terrain project. I'll be putting together some post-apoc settlements, abandoned buildings, shacks, encampments, fortifications and lairs. I have used whatever's was to hand in the past with mixed results. I want to hear your advice and experiences of using certain materials. Including: -Basing material -Building material -Finishing (ie: flock/sand) -Paints & sprays -Adhesives -Tools Also, has anyone had trouble locating anything in particular? Has anybody found any cheaper alternatives to using a certain method/material? Look forward to hearing from you. P.S. To get the ball rolling I had a major headache locating foamcore, until now. http://www.modelshop.co.uk/category/Raw_Materials,l.html |

For shanties I use a mix of corrugated card and cereal packet card. To be honest most of my modelling is done by the use what you have scavenged method (in true PA style! ). Sand from the beach for basing and PVA glue is my most used material. Bases tend to be made from what ever is laying about. CDs are a favourite. I guess I like foam board for buildings or cork floor tile. Edited by mattblackgod, Nov 10 2010, 05:39 PM.

Balsa wood or paddle-pop/lolly-pop/wood-coffe-stirers are handy too. Cork board is useful as a "substitute" for concrete. |

Quick answers: -Basing material - masonite board. -Building material - 5mm and 1/2" foamcore, cardboard, plastic bits, PVC pipe. -Finishing (ie: flock/sand) just paint, but I'm a minimalist. -Paints & sprays - craft acrylic with paint texture mixed in. -Adhesives - liquid nails for building to base, "white" glue or making the building. -Tools - all of them, but razor knives are the most used. Take a look here: http://ravenfeast.deviantart.com/gallery/#Terrain Hope this helps! Edited by RavenFeast, Nov 11 2010, 12:55 AM.

Being lazy and clumsy, I like to comb thrift stores for junk I can turn into buildings. tins of all shapes and sizes boxes small plastic organizers I found 2 plastic vhs tape organizers that will one day be warehouses. The downside is you can't enter most of my terrain. I also use craft wood, pvc pipe, plumbing parts, electrical boxes, computer "guts", and any interesting junk I find. I don't base terrain unless it won't stand up on it's own. It helps it fit better with whatever game mat we happen to be using (grass, urban, or desert) |

Ya know I forget about Thrift Stores for materials. I do look at the neighborhood yard/garage sales. --- consectari, "It helps it fit better with whatever game mat we happen to be using (grass, urban, or desert)." This has been a private topic between Danny and I before... I don't believe we ever made that conclusive decision. I want a ashen waste look for a new table mat so if use static grass on a building base or miniature bases it's going to be a real attention getter. So, does everything get based in the same ashen color, is that just too much to worry over. Luckily being a Solo Player I don't have to try yo impress anyone except me... sucks being so anal.

I forgot about the thrift stores too. Base colours I personally go for a brown. It can be wasteland, looks okay on urban terrain (wasteground, lets face it most PA ruined cities will fall into this category), is great on field and wood land boards and doesnt look too out of place in a arid landscape. |

Danny, I really like the way you clutter up your buildings, in fact I'm down right envious of the effectiveness of the debris. Because of your playing mat and buildings having such color variety I would say that is an efficient way to develop a table scheme. |

Ahh the clutter.....it is made with cheap sand (beach), some decorative gravel from a hippy shop and a resource I have plenty of ....cat litter (clean, I have not yet figured out what to do with all the cat poo my monsters create....maybe something new for the Tinker Fast Food's line? Cat Poo Kebab?). I keep it all mixed up in a tuppaware box. I also add small bits and bobs I find to add to it, stuff like scraps of plastic card, small plastic cogs. Oh dont forget PVA glue. |

Try looking for Hardboard, it's a pressed pulp product. Here in the US it has a very smooth side and on the opposite a very rough texture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardboard |

OK.So if i had one thing i would suggest to everyone it would be get you some of these......![]() They are construction shims,2mm thick and 4in square.I use them for EVERYTHING.Basing, scratch building and whatever else i can think of.They cut well with a good pair of sizzors or my favorite is to cut them in a perfect circle with a scrapbooking circle cutter. ![]() I got a bunch from a construction site i was working on and ran out about 18 months ago! I put out the word i was looking for some more and a few months later a co worker brought me a bucket full! If you can get your grubby hands on them you have terrain making gold! Brian |
