As everything needed for the MEKA TAC - GSRE game is ready for Fall In!, work has begun on finding/making a fast dungeon crawl. Been playing around with tiles (5 1-inch squares by 5 1-inch squares) and that gets 2 tiles printed on each page. Using gray card-stock saves on ink. I'd like it to be easy enough to run at cons yet deep enough to run a campaign with the club. Have not decided on a set of rules yet. In the running: Citadel of Blood (1980) - Need to convert it to miniatures. Melee/Wizard/The Fantasy Trip (1977) - A bit much for a convention game. WarEngine 2.1 (2000) - Some tweaking to get it to Medieval Fantasy. One Page Fantasy Skirmish (?) - Need to redo the entire magic system. Where Heroes Dare! (2009) - Great pulp rules, but the melee rules would have to be rewritten and combat magic added. Dark Dungeon (2006) - A simple dungeon crawl game that might fit the bill, but I need to finish reading it, and all its supplements, first. Not one is a perfect fit, but each be made to work. IMHO, CR works well for modern and near future human-on-human violence, but that's about it. I find one stat too restrictive for character/monster design in fantasy or science fiction. YMMV.

I have a the first D&D hardcovers from 1978, not to mention a couple of the better retro-clones. The intent is not to run an RPG, but a cheap, easy, fast and fun dungeon crawl without the frustrated-actor-baggage. Who am I kidding? I game with folks who roleplay Monopoly. Dark Dungeon from Avalon Game Company looks very promising. Got the "all in one bundle" and printed out the more pertinent parts. It's more of a miniature solo game set in a dungeon than a lite RPG. It can easily take multiple players. Combat system looks sound and the monsters/NPCs each have their own reaction tables right on their stat cards. The only drawback is - though the game seems quite playable - the game itself needs a proofreader. Badly. I'll try a game or two after Fall In! with the local club and the not-so-local gang. If nothing else comes of this, at least the dungeon tile design is set: 5x5 grid on 1" squares. That's 2 tiles per printed sheet of gray card stock. I've gotten over 3 dozen different tiles finished. ![]() |

As much as it truly does pain me to say this, have you considered 4th Edition D&D? |

Good man. I feel horribly soiled for even making the suggestion and am now in desperate need of cleansing. Please pass the industrial strength solvent. |
