I got the modeling bug again, and bought a bunch of cheap-ish Foam-Core at the pharmacy. The Mariposa Military Base project is still in the planning phases, and the Necropolis project is probably going to be canceled... but I'm working on some modular city ruins, starting with this 9 inch by 7 inch by 7.5 inch 3-story ruin. I know, I should have started on a smaller piece, but whatever! LOL![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For now it's just slapped together with scotch tape... I just wanted to see how it looked with the pieces all assembled. I need to do some more trimming on the 2nd and 3rd floor landings, to make it easier to handle minis on the first floor -- and to make the damage look more "arced" as if a massive airburst blew a spherical "hole" in the neighborhood. In one shot you can see some Rangers poking their weapons out through the windows. The scale seems a little off, but it looks pretty decent I think. The windows are all 1-inch squares. The doorway is 1 inch by 1-and-three-quarter inches. Everything seems just a bit too tall, but the main thing is that you can get your guns pointed out through the windows. (Minis can also stand in doorways.) "Maim Street" will eventually consist of four 16-inch-by-16-inch square Quadrants, each Quadrant containing two semi-ruined buildings and 2 lanes of road. The square bases can then be assembled to create a 32-inch-by-32-inch city-scape, with a 32-inch-by-12-inch road running straight down the middle, and four semi-ruined buildings on either side. Possible Scenarios: A) Turf War: Each team seeks to eliminate the other from the board to claim Maim Street as their property. All units may Retreat by reaching a Neutral Table Edge. Combat ends when only one team has conscious units on the table. Teams can be any Faction. B) Convoy: One team (Brotherhood of Steel) must get its Armored Personnel Carrier (filled with food, water, medical supplies and ammunition) from one end of Maim Street to the other; the opposing team must stop them to claim the supplies as their own. Retreat is not possible. C) Double Team: Essentially the same as B, but there are a total of three teams. Two of the teams (Raiders and Super Mutants) start on opposite sides of the road, in or behind the semi-ruined buildings, and the third team (Brotherhood of Steel) starts on one end of the road. Combat ends when only one team still has conscious units on the table. The B.O.S. team can only "Retreat" by reaching the opposite end of the road, and they can only "Win" if their APC successfully retreats in this manner. The other teams can only "Win" by preventing the APC's escape AND eliminating all enemy units on the table. I am also thinking about building an "intersection" piece, allowing one of the four Quadrants of "Maim Street" to be replaced with a T-intersection. This would simply add more variety to the playing field, and variety is usually a good thing. However, there wouldn't be much cover, which means the terrain wouldn't get used much during play. So it's just a thought for now. The Quadrants could also be rearranged to create a dense city block with the road sections on the edges of the game board and the buildings in the center. This would create two very obvious starting zones for the opposing teams, and place a football-shaped crater right in the middle of 8 semi-ruined buildings! Scenarios come easily to mind for this configuration. A) Scavenger Hunt: There are four Loot Markers in the semi-ruined buildings. Two teams start on opposing table edges. Each team has at least one Hero, and Heroes are the only units that can acquire and carry the Loot. So, each team must keep its Hero(es) alive while making their way around the terrain to the various Loot markers. Teams score one Victory Point for each piece of Loot that they are able to acquire AND carry back to their starting table edge. Obviously, eliminating the enemy Heroes can prevent the other team from Scoring, so Looting will be EXTREMELY competitive! ![]() B) Surrounded: Some Super Mutants have established a base of operations in a radioactive crater in the middle of a metropolitan area. The B.O.S. has tracked them down, and is hitting them from two directions at once. B.O.S. units may Retreat from either of their starting table edges; the Mutants can Retreat at the Neutral table edges. The last team with conscious units on the table wins the game... it's a battle to the death! Edited by Ninjamonkey73, Oct 13 2010, 08:26 PM.

Those shots also give you a decent look at my modular Game Table... when I asked my landlord (he's a carpenter by trade) where I should look for materials, he immediately volunteered to make the base-sections for me out of scraps he had in the basement. They're 16-by-16 squares of quarter-inch plywood, with a roughly 14-by-14 square attached underneath with heavy staples and wood glue. He had them clamped down and everything. I can't believe how helpful he was. His help kicked my ass into gear and made me immediately want to start building terrain. A couple of days later, and I had this building all cut out! The 14-by-14 "plate" fits into the indentations in the top of the coffee table where the glass squares are supposed to be, then the 16-by-16 sections meet flush to provide a broad, flat playing surface... and since I'm using stuff like foam-core and plastic miniatures, I'm pretty sure a half-inch of reinforced plywood can carry the weight. ![]() (We got the coffee table from the curb, someone had thrown it out because one of the four glass pieces was broken. I've had it for roughly ten years now LOL. So far I've only broken one more glass piece, and it was just the corner... it cracked when I left a burning tea light on top of it for too many hours.) |

Nice start, and I'll be stealing that road idea. |

Good start. You are inspiring me to get my act together and get building more ruins for my table. That said I am thinking about a nearly intact apartment block that can be used as a base for a gang or some other faction. That road idea is great. I may mean rebasing my buildings so they fit the road/pavement height. Another scenario is to have a nuke bomb in the centre of the crater, like the one at Megaton in Fallout 3. The mission could be to either to make it safe, detonate it, remove some radioactive elements (for your power generator or dirty bomb) or steal it. |

Speaking of basing... each building is going to be on a rectangular foam-core base, with 1" of "sidewalk" on the sides and the back, and two full inches of sidewalk on the front of the building. This way, when buildings are placed next to one another, or back-to-back, there will be a 2-inch "alley" between them. Right now plans call for 8 buildings: 2 nine-by-sevens, two seven-by-sevens, two five-by-sevens, a three-by-seven, and a 3-inch-wide "news-stand." I'm pondering the possibility of a Subway Entrance as well, but I'm grappling with the idea of how to implement it. I figure I can make the stairs go down about two quarter-inch steps, then maybe fill the stairwell with rubble? ..or paint it black and pretend it goes deeper? The road will be a total of twelve inches wide, allowing two full lanes of traffic in both directions (assuming a car is about 2 inches wide) and even a Parking Lane on either side. This means that, with the twoi-inch sidewalks, the buildings on opposite sides of the road will be 16 inches apart. That's precisely half the table length, and also precisely the maximum range for most conventional weapons. ![]() Only the bravest units will try to run across that road through the free fire zone LOL. |

I have been pondering making a subway/metro entrance too. In both Fallout 3 and Metro2033 they are vital for going up top or moving about safely (or at least safer than on the surface). I was thinking about a raised area with a hole, top steps down and the hole painted black. Another way is to build a tunnel exit with a metal gate. This could be done as a station side exit. A sloping box of cylindrical section would make a covered tunnel. Then build up the rest of the exit as desired. Dont forget the signs. I am guessing that you will need 50-75mm diameter for the tunnel (or height for a boxed version). A tubular version could have sloping vertical walls to giving it a arched roof which might look good. Just make the walls on a slope so it appears to go underground. A similar construction could be made for a bunker. There is a old WW2 underground munitions factory a few miles away and it has such an entrance. All you would need is some sort of heavy blast doors. |

I don't really want to do raised stuff, though. I will eventually want to build some modular tunnels, though. Your tunnels were very inspiring. |
