I was wondering how you guys went about doing a chipped paint effect? Do you start off with the metal, then the paint, or paint the base colour and add the chips later? And yes, I am actually doing something

I paint my chips on but actually chipping the min might be better. I seem to recall Dalimore doing something similar with metal mins. |

There are a number of methods for doing this, but my personal preference is to paint the chips on afterwards. Just paint a black splotch and fill it in with metal/silver/whatever, just make sure to leave a fine line of black showing (very fine line, as little as possible). |

Interesting tutorials... but unless your really going to go to town on something, as in competition level, then its a lot of unnecessary work. If its vehicles your wanting to chip (and thats usually a fairly safe bet) then the simply black/silver painted method is both faster and more controlled than the other methods, meaning its easier to make the ships look like they belong, you can more easily place them in areas where wear and tear is likely to occur, and even get them into crevaces (poaint doesn't just peal from the surface). |

I usually go with the style Mal uses. Though at times if it's a rush job I just drybrush metalics on. |

A fairly quick and simple way is to use a sponge. It deposits the paint in tiny little flecks and tends to concentrate on the corners, were real chips happen. I use a darkish brown. As long as the sponge isn't over-loaded, just dab it on and you get a great effect. If you want to go to town, use a lighter version of your base colour first, which looks like sun bleaching or chips that go down to the undercoat but not the metal, then cover with the brown. If you use the 'paint on chips method', try adding a light orange wash (very thin) from a couple of the bigger patches. Finally, to do something that is completely rusted, try painting everything a light orangey brown, then dab on orange, dark brown and finally and sparingly, black. Works surprisngly well and only takes a few minutes. A few examples below. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

..nice work..as in fantastic paintjob. thanks for posting the pics. What is that last truck? I see you used a GW ork buggy part as ramplate and GW autocannon in the back but I do not recognise the truck itself. nice way to finish the windows by the way. No driver needed in this one. just an afterthought: pigs are difficult to post. If you got a pig and post it's best to club the pig with the post , then skewer the beast and roast it... burry the remains of your meal or the Radrats will find you

The last truck is a Matchbox toy. The original is below. I love mucking around with old toys. A few other examples below. As ever, I have far more 'projects' waiting for conversion than I'll ever have time for but it doesn't stop me buying more. The gun truck base. ![]() The QM wagon and base vehicle. ![]() ![]() The pick up truck and and base. ![]() ![]() The command vehicle and base. ![]()

I notice they all have the same paint scheme, if they all belong to one faction... who do they fight? |

A couple of factions on the go. Those with the same paint scheme belong to Ranger Company - a merc outfit. The gun truck is one of a few for a group of raiders called the Sand Tigerz; the rest are all still about 50% complete, and have been for months. Work eats time that should be spent modelling. The big gap is the people. I have about 40 folks almost complete, and a load of robots, but again they have been that way for about 2 months. Note to self. Must...get...on...with...it. Ranger Company vehicles below. Apologies to those who have seen the photo before. Posted on Lead Adenture a little while ago. ![]() |
