Having been pretty tired all week, I'm going to skip gamesoc tomorrow... which means I'll have chance to get anotehr solo game in. I'vegot it prepped this evening, so that when I'm ready tomorrow I can literally just start rolling dice. Here's the prelim stuff just to get folks eager...

Background:
Matobu's Kraal was quite well known to the Tangan security forces. A remote cluster of huts, just over the Dagomban border, it often served as a hiding place for TUF fighters and sometimes as a way point for smuggling arms into Tanga to equip some of the TUF terrorist cells in country. Now, it would have been pretty easy for some Tangan Air Force (TAF) Canberra to have leveled the place or to drop some Light Infantry on it in a fire force; and that would be that. On the other hand, it was useful to have a known point, somewhere to mix in Tangan intelligance agents and there was always the danger the Canberra or the fire force would be detected by the UN monitors in Dagomba and it would spark another whole round of international finger waving.

Sometimes a big enough haul merits some sort of intervention - usually from one of the hunter-killer pseudo-gangs of Ballantyne's Scouts (These groups opperate on a similar line to the Portugese 'Flecha' units, and are paid bounties on all killed or captured terrs.)

Intelligance reached the Tangan CID that a group of TUF Terrs was moving in country, along with a shipment of arms. Action had to be taken.

Forces: Tangans
Ballantynes Scouts - 9 Pesudo-Gang members, all classed as Proffessionals, armed with 1 SAW & 8 Assault Rifles
Posted Image
Posted Image

Forces: TUF

Dagomban TUF Sympathisers - 8 Villagers, all classed as Rabble, armed with a mix of weapons. Primarily out dated blt action rifles & shotguns, but there are a couple of AKs
Posted Image

TUF Fighters - 1 unit of 11, 1 unit of 12. all classed as Militia, with 3 SAW between the units. Majority of the militia have AK's, but there are some other weapons.
Posted Image
Posted Image

TUF bearers - Unknown number. Counted as Rabble & unarmed.

Al,

It was easy to miss from one of Xander's earlier Bat Reps responses to that question he said:

"At Close Quarters" was Chris Peers' Seminal 'Section level' skirmish set. (All the others, like Good Day to Die, Future Wars, etc were derived from them. I say section level, what I mean is its got smaller forces than In the Heart of Africa or Contemptable Little Armies).
Its currently in its 3rd edition (2004), but they seem to have fallen out of favour with the modern skirmish gaming crowd in the last few years - no real idea why. I get the impression that they are perhaps better suited to 'Modern' rather than 'Ultra-modern' games, but I'm not sure I could explain why... "

Thanks Al - as Tinker said for the ACQ definition... 4 to 5 years abck there were quite a few articles in Wargames Illustrated about the system (HLBS were pushing it as the rules of choice for use with their 36mm Moderns)

This was Neil Shuck's review of 1st & 2nd Editions: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neil.shuck/revacq.html

The 3rd edition removes the WW2 references and tweaks a few things to make the system fit better for 1960+ (A corner of Hell having been published to cover WW2 gaming with the system)

I may not get to play this afterall - my socail calender for the day has suddenly filled up.... The parents are coming for coffee, and then a mate is coming around tonight for movies. I may be able to get something sorted tomorrow, but it seems a tad off to be playing a wargame on rememberance Sunday...

Cheers DAWGIE! That is high praise indeed!

The figures are all stock. They comprise a mix of TAG (in the most part, although some of them are paint converted Victor Charlies), with some Brittania (blue shirt & Head-dress guys in the Psuedo-gang). Foundry (Darkest Africa guys -shotgun & turban & Winchester & Fez from the Dagomban sympathisers), Brigade (winchester, arm band & bare chest dagomban), Mofo (Child Soldier; guy in green fatigues; guy in black Tee shirt, desert cammo combats& green chest rig; green jacket, neck scarf silenced M4 guy; ) & Mongrel (Guys in head scarves, or with arab style neck cloths; & Red beret & browny-pink trousers guy).
This is where having all the figures pays off!

I tweaked the table slightly before the game - really just adding a little more 'scatter terrain'
Posted Image

Tangan objectives: Kill or capture the maximum number of TUF terrorists. If possible, aprehend the arms.
TUF objectives: Minimise casualties whilst trying to extract the weapons.

The view the pseudo-gang have of Matobu's Kraal as they wend their way through the bush:
Posted Image

The TUF fighters and their porters slowly make their way out of the kraal, having dug up the weapons:
Posted Image

Seeing this, the Pseudo gang break into a steady jog. The guards take no notice as this seeming band of TUF fighters closes...
Posted Image

Closing further, the pseudo-gang opens up with supression fire - caught unawards, the majority of the TUF fighters still in the kraal hit the deck, trying to take shelkter behind the Zerreba thorn hedge. Some of the portes come under fire and take cover, whilst 2 of the unsuspectign watchmen also throw themselves to the ground a kalashnikov rounds whip over their heads.
Posted Image
Posted Image

After the initial shock, some of the TUF fighters recover enough nerve to get back up and try to work out what's going on:
Posted Image

One of the Dagomban villagers does the same:
Posted Image

The prtoers file out of the Kraal as quickly as possible, whilst the group of TUF fiughtersthat had gone ahead doubles back to see what's going on:
Posted Image

The pseudo-gang continue to move forwards, more slowly now - some carfeully pick shots at the fighters in the kraal, whilst others maintain the supressing fire. One breaks off, to keep up the fire on the neighbouring villagers

Flurries of fire from the Kraal kill two of the advancing scouts, whilst the Sgt in chrage of the pseudo gang drives for ocver as a fighter who can't be much older than 14 lets fly with a shotgun. Return fire from the scouts punches through the megre cover of the thron hedge, killing several terrs and supressing others.
The scout that hung back keeps the villigers sumpressed with occasional shots from his AK:
Posted Image
Posted Image

The porters surge out of the Kraal as the TUFfies spend most of their time in cover...
Posted Image

The scouts continue to advance and fire, claiming more casualties in the Kraal. Meanwhile, the other TUF band keeps pushing forwards, and although supressing fire from the scouts keep them from doing too much, they manage to get in enough fire to keep some of the scouts pinned:
Posted Image

One of the villigers on the hill braves the supressing fire, and pops up to take a shot at the scouts by the kraal. To everyones amazement he kills one!
Posted Image

Meanwhile, the porters move futher and further away from the combat zone:
Posted Image

The scouts ignore their losses and the incoming fire and keep pushing forwards. More of the TUF behind the zarreba fall, whilst the second group still remain pinned:
Posted Image

With the scout on the hill switching his attention to the advancing 2nd TUF group, the other villiger regains his nerve and start shooting at the pseudo-gang:
Posted Image

And the porters get even further away:

The villagers cover the remaining porters, but 2 are still pinned close to the Kraal gateway:
Posted Image

The remaining porters start to leave the battlefield:
Posted Image

Back by the Kraal, the pesudo gang keeping pushing forwards and reach the zereba. This position lets them pour fire into the kraal. Some of the unpinned TUF fighters fall back to the opposite side, but the ones taking cover don't stand much of a chance:
Posted Image

The second group of TUF fighters move up, and throw some fire out, making the scout with the RPK dive for cover.
Posted Image

On the hill, the scout is brought down by rifle fire from the militia:
Posted Image

The gun battle around the zarreba is pretty fierce. A couple more TUFfies ae killed, the rest fleeing, whilst 1 previously pinned terrorist throws his hands up in surrender. The fight hasn't been all one sided, as the Scout's Sgt & RPK gunner are both dead:
Posted Image
Posted Image

The scouts have also been able to keep the second TUF group supressed:
Posted Image

However, the brief break in firing whilst the scouts 2-i-c takes over is all the remaining TUFfies need, and their leader and several others leap up and charge forwards.
The fight is fierce, and 2 of the scouts are killed, although they inflict similar damage on the TFU fighters. Thinking they are about to be over run, 1 of the scouts shoots the surrendering terrorist in the Kraal. But the tide of the battle tuns, and having seen some of the chraging TUF fighters fall, the main groups resolve falters and then fails. AS they head for the hills, the remaining TUF fighters in combat surrender:
Posted Image

The two porters who hit the dirt early on never quite summon up the courage to move, and are also captured:
Posted Image

The dagomban villagers drift off into the bush as the Scouts set fire to the kraal:
Posted Image

Outcomes - Tangans
5 Casualties,
Objectives: 11 TUF kills & a further 5 captured. Of these, 2 were porters

Outcomes - TUF
16 Casualties. (This left 16 fighters or symathisers who had fled atthe end of the game, and 8 out of the 10 porters suceeded in escaping)
Objectives: 80% ofthe arms cache was removed successfully

Conclusions
Definately a draw - although the TUF managed to get the majortiy of the arms crates away, they took quite a beating doing so. The same goes for the Pseudo gang, who got hammered pretty badly but did manage to kill or capture almost 1/2 their opposition.

Aye - which means that the TUF forces in the next game will get an extra militiaman with a SAW & another with a RPG... Something the Tangans really aren't going to want... (Yup - I've got the next game planned already!)

Wow looks like you had a blast, on the other hand the Tangans aren't going to like the fact that 80% of the arms cache got away...

Cheers Oliver - no, the Tangans won't be terribly happy. Still - they got a gander at what was in the crates they captured (pistols, grenades & ammunition) so they got an idea about what the kit might be. I'm guessing they'll try to track the porters, and hopefully mount another raid before TUF can capitalise on it....
