How many Factions Make For A Good Game World?; New Figure Range...How Many Factions?

Freebooter mentioned that Taban's new figure range has 4 factions to get it all started.
I am also working on 4 factions to get things started...so it got me thinking.

How many Gangs...are enought do you think, to play in a well developed FUN world?

Hmmm.... I'd have said Necro + addons got it about right at, say, 8-12 different/semi-different groups. (I guess it boils down to Redemptionists, Scavys, Ratskins, Spyrers & Gangers. Of course, the gangers were then rather sub devided into different feels; perhaps too much so - I'd have probably only done maybe 4 rather than the 5+ that GW did)

That way you can have several diverse factions, with quite different visual/gameplay styles - atleast 1 of which is likely to appeal to someone?

Many of the games I play have 6-8 different faction types. Of course that doesn't mean that two groups of the same faction type cant hate each other.

My own collection is currently running at around 50 different groups falling into maybe 8 different faction types.

For the Stalker project if you go with the first game factions there is seven (not including mutant beasties), nine if you include the clear sky game.

I'd go for at least 8, but with provisions in the rules for players creating their own. Needlessly limiting the players' creative impulses does not endear them to a game system where the entire premise is speculative fiction stumbling over the line to pure fantasy - the exact premise that would attract creative players to begin with! But that's just me.

And, as mentioned earlier, there doesn't have to be love between gangs in the same faction, though they would rally together in the face of a sufficiently scary outside threat.

I don't think you can have balance with fewer than 4. If there are only 3 factions, it's only a matter of time before 2 of them gang up on the third and wipe them out. With 4, you've always got a tenuous balance of power.

Other than that, IMO less is more. Too many ingredients spoils the dish.

Not really too many, but then again are you willing to sculpt how ever many for each faction??

Time as much as anything, I imagine it takes you a while to sculpt a mini even in 15mm?

Well I am not putting a time limit on it...if it takes a year or so to do say 10 or more sculptures for each of the 20 factions...then that is how long I will work on it.

It takes me about a week to make 1 15mm figure.
I am doing a ton of detailing becuase I want my 15mm figures to look like good 30mm figures.

If you're talking about a whole world, it can have pretty much unlimited factions.

Variety is good, but beyond saying you need "a few" so players can pick, you shouldn't put a number on it.

If you have an idea that gets you motivated and excited, that's enough justification to make a faction. Don't worry that it's too many.

On the other hand, don't make factions just to reach some arbitrary number.

Let creativity decide.

I think I was kind of going for something that other companies have done, or rather the ideas were still in the back of my mind to be sort of like the standards expect.

The real deal is to do what the hell I want to do, as it is all my work and my company to begin and end with.
It helps to talk this stuff out with other like minded SMART people.

If your range isn't tied to any particular rules or background then you can do what ever you fancy from what ever Post Apoc background and time scale.

I would suggest going through the factions for Mutants and Death Ray guns too as I know there is a 15mm set of rules in there too. It would then get some business from folks who want to play these rules too.

As I recall there are Pure Strain Humans, Mutant Humans, Mutant Animals, Mutant plants (plant men now theres an idea), Robots and mixed warbands.

I'm all about d10 rules.
I downloaded the NR and Skank sets you and Lazy D linked for me Blackie.
What else do you guys think fits, keeping in mind that I love Mutants and Skills & Powers for my guys...Necromunda and such like goodness.
Also could you guys help me do some work on rules listings and stuff if these rules owners say I can use their stuff as I see fit to go with my miniatures?
Then there is the idea that we could just write up our own rules too.

It's been (sort of) talked about... I think the problem we had was that everyone wants different stuff from a game, and as a forum wide project I don't know that we'd get very far...
