----------------------------------------------------------------- WYMA JANE BOGGS INCIDENT ----------------------------------------------------------------- while on routine patrol in a frontier star system, a FLEA corvette recieves a distress signal from a vessel IDing itself as the WYMA JANE BOGGS. although comms were lost BEFORE the FLEA corvette was able to establish them, it appeared that there was some sort of disturbance inboard the WJB, possibly mutineers or hi-jackers. WJB's position at the time of the transmission was in orbit around the system's only gas giant. as luck would have it, the corvette was already bound for the same gas giant to re-fuel before jumping out-system on the next leg of its patrol. an interception was plotted and the corvette's thrusters blazed into action with a 6-G burn. hang on, WYMA JANE BOGGS, the FLEA was on the way! THE FLEAS. (FLEA: Federation Law Enforcement Authority, the long arm of Federation Law. think of the FLEA as a star traveling combo of the US COAST GUARD, US COAST/GEODETIC SURVEY, US CUSTOMS/IMMIGRATION, US BORDER PATROL, US FBI, US MARSHALS, and TEXAS RANGERS. a para-military law enforcement agency based on the surface of worlds as well as in space-and-star traveling ships) FLEA CORVETTE 1313 is 15 year old 600-MT patrol corvette, with long/fast "legs" (J-4, 6-G), keen "eyes/ears" (military sensory/signals array), and significant "teeth/claws" (six triple weapons turrets; fitted with conventional weaponry, no nukes). like all vessels of her class she is streamlined for atmospheric ops, and equipped with fuel scoops/inboard fuel refinery units (needful for frontier refueling, ie, skimming fuel from a gas giant) and with a crew of 4 officers, 6 chief petty officers, and 14 petty officers-everyone has basic law enforcement training and is cross trained in other areas should the need arise. FLEA #1313, like all corvettes, is outfitted for rescue/salvage ops (modern med bay facilities/salvage gear), as well as law enforcement (brig facilities for 8 bods, detention low berths for up to 24 bods), has an arms room well stocked with individual/crew served weaponry (lethal/less than lethal weaponry). a. REP-4 (S-3/M-4) petty officers. characteristics/abilities optional. WYMA JANE BOGGS is a 20 year old 250,000-MT cargo hauler owned by BOGGS INTERSYSTEM TRANSPORT, LTD, home port TERRA. WYMA JANE BOGGS is pretty typical for a vessel of her type: crew of 30 bods, with limited passenger transport capability, big, lightly armed (4 twin turrets w/beam lasers), with short/slow "legs" (J-2, 1-G), a "normal civvie" comms/sensory array, a non stream- lined hull for orbit to orbit ops only. no auxiliary cargo transfer craft, six atmospherically streamlined auxiliary craft for use as orbit to surface interface or non jump capable lifeboats in an emergency. none of these auxiliaries are outfitted to serve as fuel skimmers, and WYMAN JANE BOGGS is not fitted with inboard fuel processing plants, either. in short, ships of the WYMA JANE BOGGS type are typically found on regular runs between star systems/planets of the core, not out here on the frontier. . . . curiouser and curiouser. there are no BOLOS for the WYMA JANE BOGGS posted. WYMA JANE BOGGS is in close orbit around the gas giant, doe not answer the FLEA corvette's hail. a close flyby reveals some hull damage to cargo containers along the port and starboard sides, and there was apparently some sort of large explosion in the power/propulsion hull. none of the boat bays were open, but there IS another ship docked with WYMA JANE BOGGS, a small vessel, KILROY WAS HERE, a free trader type commonly found doing "business" on the frontier. the transponders on both ships ARE NOT squawking as required by law and neither vessel responds to hails from the FLEA corvette. KILROY WAS HERE is a 50 year old, paid for TYPE A2 FREE TRADER, out of BALDONE, owned/operated by a captain with the unlikely name of KIDD. KILROY mounts two twin turrets fitted with pulse laser weapons.normal crew is 5-8 bods, with facilities for 10 mobile passengers. low berths will hold up to 20 other passengers. last known port of call for KILROY WAS HERE is not known. there are no BOLOS posted for KILROY WAS HERE, and no record of any (provable in court) illegal activities either. ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? the FLEA skipper decides to match orbits with the ships, and send a boarding party over via EVA thruster packs. THE BOARDING PARTY. the skipper can select the members of the boarding party, and may lead it in person (if so, other pilot must remain inboard the corvette with a minimum flight crew). one officer and up to three four bod boarding teams are dispatched to investigate the ships. the skipper can also decide which vessel is to be boarded/searched first. all members of the boarding party are wearing rigid (armored) vacc-suits with 8 hours of lifesupport, comms units, headlights, and vision gear. the EVA thrusters can be removed and left at the entry airlock for improved mobility inside the ships. all members of the boarding party have an issue handgun, an assault carbine (w/shotgun under barrel attachment fitted), basic ammo, a knife, and a FLEA issue crash axe (wide rounded, very sharp, one piece hatchet with a skull crusher butt-spike: very handy in CC as well as for hacking through light bulkheads, etc). one boarder in four has a SAW instead of the assault carbine. one boarder in four has a las-cutter. everyone has a medi-kit and lizard line/launcher. KILROY WAS HERE. large cargo airlock and a smaller personnel airlock are located at the stern. smaller personnel airlock located amidships, on the port side only. cargo hold makes up the entire lower deck level, ladders on each side, aft and forward go up to catwalk that runs completely around the cargo hold. two airtight doors located in the foreward bulkhead at catwalk level connect with the rest of the ship. interior is normally lighted, artificial gravity field generator is on, ship interior is a shirt sleeve environment. there is some evidence of combat, including some really nasty looking corpses scattered about the interior of KILROY WAS HERE. power/propulsion control/jump drive unit is on upperdeck, along with flight control, living quarters, common areas, consumables stores, etc. large VTOL thrusters, fuel tankage, fuel processing plant, and fuel scoops are located outside the hull but fitted with maintenance hatches. access to the ventral weapons turret is via the cargo hold. access to the dorsal weapons turret is via the upper deck. large cargo airlock is locked shut from the bridge but the personnel lock is working, so entry is through the personnel airlock. KILROY WAS HERE is a SMALL starship! so layout the SPACEHULK deck sections accordingly (3 foot long, 2 foot wide max)! WYMA JANE BOGGS on the other hand is a HUGE starship! the 250,000-MT hull is jammed with multiple decks, lifts, various spaces, compartments, cargo holds, cargo handling machinery, living quarters, limited passenger facilities, auxiliary boat bays, etc. each cargo hold has its own exterior cargo lock, and there are multiple smaller airlocks scattered about the main hull section to allow easy access for crew EVA. interior is lighted, with AFG generators working, shirt sleeve environment. note that the KILROY WAS HERE is docked at the midships dorsal docking tower, not the ventral docking tower. the bridge is located forward on the upper deck, power/propulsion control is aft, as is the power plant/jump drive/ main maneuver thrusters. lots of evidence of combat all over the ship interior, including some corpses. WYMA JANE BOGGS was apparently the scene of a bloodbath. use SPACEHULK floor plans for compartments,passageways, holds, etc. i used a 5-ft by 5-ft table to setup the deck plans. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? WYMA JANE BOGGS is testing a prototype FTL drive unit, which is fitted into a pair of the cargo holds (in addition to the usual jump drive unit); this new FTL drive (in theory) would break the so-called SIX PARSEC BARRIER (the maximum distance that modern HUMAN starships can NORMALLY travel using FTL propulsion). according to the inventor, DR. BILLY BOB BEACH, his drive will jump up to TWELVE PARSECs using the same fuel load and carrying the same amount of cargo, in the same length of time currently required to traverse six parsecs. (cue in LIZZA MINELLI singing "money, money! pounds, francs, marks, bucks," etc!) WYMA JANE BOGGS, with a handpicked crew as well as BBB and other scientist/techs made the "big jump" without fanfare last month and arrived here, at the edge of nowhere. trouble was, the BEACH DRIVE apparently transited an alternate universe inhabited by hostile lifeforms, that entered the ship and started killing the crew! by the time WYMA JANE BOGGS dropped back into the "real universe" the kakky had hit the oscillating fan big time! KILROY WAS HERE entered the system and cruised over to the gas giant to skim fuel. surprise, surprise! there was a huge cargo hauler in orbit, broadcasting a garbled distress signal! WYMA JANE BOGGS represented a huge amount of salvage money to CAPTAIN KIDD and his crew! he even invited the 5 passengers (all unemployed mercs) to sign on as crew and share in the windfall that salvaging a huge cargo hauler would provide! sooo, with visions of LA DOLCE VITA dancing in their heads, the crew boarded WYMA JANE BOGGS after docking KILROY WAS HERE with her. . . THE OTHERS. well, LOL, this gave me a chance to drag out those ever useful plastic genestealers and spring them on my unsuspecting nephew! LOL, he knows what genestealers are, but, friends, these were genestealers with a difference! they could do all of the usual good stuff, AND, they could TELEPORT short distances! literall y appear in the middle of the humans, kickass, or take some one home to meet MOTHER. of course, if a bod survived long enough to learn, a bod would soon come to the conclusion that the well defined "sparkling haze" was the introduction to an incoming/outgoing genestealer, who would appear/disappear inside this "shimmer" with a loud "popping" noise! they could only teleport into an area with room to materialize in same. and guess what? if you fired into this "shimmer" the teleporting genestealer could be killed or wounded! i used the CR2.0 stats for "LITTLE BUGS". teleport distance was limited to 12" max (even when toting a snatched human), required an open space to appear in, and could only be done during genestealer activation or as a result of a reaction! we had a really fun time fighting the GENESTEALERS! he was leader/star, i was his #2/star. LOL, the boarding party got its ass kicked and the survivors only managed to escape from the WYMA JANE BOGGS via EVA thruster packs (which he decided we would not leave at the airlock this reduced our move in 1-G environment by 2" and as well as a -1 penalty to opposed rolls for agility, etc! made life really interesting for the boarding party, it did! i shudder to think what would have happened if he had docked with WYMA JANE BOGGS! THANKS, DANNY! the FLEA is an old organizational idea of mine going way back to the 1970s, which saw several generations of lead and plastic from different makers provide bods for the leadership, ncos, and ratings of FLEA. also, sveral different sets of sci fi rules were used to play with; STARGUARD, SPACE PATROL, INTERSTELLAR MARINE, SPACE MARINE (FGU, not GW), 40K:RT and 40K v/1. now days rules of choice are CR2.0/CR3.0 and 5150 from THWG. DAWGIE, who was given custom made belt buckle with FLEA engraved on it that he wore proudly for many years . . . |
