Seeing a fiction board up finally got me to join your ramshackle community. I've got loads of fluff for a post-apocalyptic world of my own creation, perfect for any roleplaying, wargaming, or writing I may do. So, for starters, I just wanted to list the basic ideas:

1. The Earth suffered a massive nuclear war that wiped billions of humans from the face of the planet. This was the culmination of World War III
2. The radiation mutated many of the living things that were still alive, be they plant or animal.
3. Most of the surviving humans are the descendants of those who lived in relatively unimportant cities, and managed to escape the radiation. Some groups, all of them former members of the various Earth governments, were hidden in underground vaults and facilities. These are relatively few however.
4. In the United States, the most heavily bombarded region was the Northeast Corridor, now known as the Scar, which encompasses the ruins and surroundings of Washington D.C., Baltimore, Phillidelphia, New York City (Go Brooklyn!), and Boston. Every State Capital was also levelled. The West Coast was another sight of heavy bombardment.
5. Most regions are not wastelands. Only the ruins of major cities are classified as such. However, mutation has spread even to the wilderness.
6. There is still lingering radiation in some areas.
7. Before the devestating nuclear war that brought mankind low, the United States experienced a second civil war. The losers of the conflict retreated far to the North, and set up a secret nation, known as the Exiled States of America.

And the very first faction I created to populate this world:

The Guild
The Guild has its origins in pre-war society. During World War III, their was a massive arms race going on between the many nations. The United States was no exception to this, and much of its advanced technology came from the Imperial Research And Development Divison, located in the Empire State Building. To house this highly secret organization, the Empire State Building was refurbished with a stronger structure, and a massive underground base which was resistant to nuclear attack. The majority of the development was done in this underground "vault". There advanced weapons and technology was created, among them several variants of power armor, the famed pulse rifle, and several powerful tanks. Before the bombs fell the scientists were working on a generator that could supposedly power the entire planet.

This was all cut short when the world was devestated by the bombs. Protected by their underground bunker, the huge team of scientists and their assigned bodyguards hunkered down and waited. Over the decades they slowly evolved their own culture, and even becam semi-religious. They believed that each machine had its own spirit, and as such should be treated with respect. Furthermore, they believed that replacing their body parts with bionics is akin to a religious experience, and as such many of them have cybernetic limbs and parts.

By the time they had risen to the surface, they had become the Guild. Taking the colors of red and black as their symbol, the Guild is force to be reckoned with, and have numerous outposts throughout the former state of New York. However, they are less concerned with obtaining land as much as recovering technology so as to keep it away from those who would defile it with their unclean hands.
The governmental and scientific branches of Guild society developed from the scientists and U.S. officals of the original division, while the Tech Guard was formed by the military presence.

(The Guild was inspired, quite obviously, from the Adeptus Mechanicus of the 40k fluff.)

Thanks!
When I originally started my own little doomed world I was actually just trying to turn my home city of New York City into a wasteland. And so, the Imperial Wasteland was born! Soon after, though, I decided to expand. Here's a basic description of the ruins of New York.

The Imperial Wasteland
New York City was one of the most heavily bombed areas around the world. It was home to millions of people, and was the location of the Imperial Research And Development Divison, the expanded Fort Hamilton Military Base, and the Bronx Institute of Advanced Biology (more on the last two later). The shipyards, now filled with military vessels, were also a key objective.

Several experimental weapons were detonated over New York. Staten Island was shattered by the Earthbreaker Missle. These new Staten Islands became the home of a number of primitive tribes. Bronx was almost completely annihilated, because of the rumors that the Institue was developing deadly biological weapons. Brooklyn and Queens, meanwhile, were ruined by a group of smaller warheads.

Due to their proximity, a number of other cities were also destroyed, including Jersey City and Hoboken. All these areas make up the Imperial Wasteland, which has become a hotbead of activity. The powerful Guild is based in Manhattan, while the Kingdom of Klynn is quickly expanding their influence. The crater that was once the Bronx is swarming with mutants. The extensive subway and sewer system are home to what many mutologists believe to be the single largest gathering of Ghouls ever recorded. The haunting screams and calls echoing through the darkness have earned them the name Howling Caverns. Roguesport, located in once famous Coney Island, is the center of nautical trade in the area, and is filled to the brim with gangs, pirates, traders, and every bit of post-apocalyptic scum you could ever think of.

Many come to seek their fortune in the Imperial Wasteland.
