I finally started painting the Super Mutants! I don't have nearly enough paints (yet) to do these guys justice, but I *did* manage to blend a nice shade for their skin. First I tried Goblin Green, but I didn't like how it looked... too bright and colorful. I mixed in some Snakebite Leather and ended up with something resembling pea soup LOL... perfect! ![]() I'm going to need more paints before I continue with these guys. I ordered my "raiders" (Catachan Jungle Fighters) and I'll have them in about a week. Unfortunately, I just found out that the Ork arms I was going to give them are TOO BIG!!! Completely wrecks my idea to give the raiders SMGs. I guess I'll have to give them a mix of pistols, rifles and knives. I guess that's not too bad. I'm super-bummed, though.

Yeah, I'm just not very confident in my "cutting" skills. Also, the Ork weapons themselves are scaled differently... they make the lasguns look tiny LOL. Here's a size comparison using a Cadian:

Wow - I noticed that when I got some off ebay. I use them as heavy weapons. Cut the las rifle barrel off and the stock and you will have a square compact SMG. You could keep the mussel and refit it to the rifle. Edited by mattblackgod, Sep 13 2009, 06:53 PM.

That's a good thought. I was also thinking the IG Grenade Launchers look kind of like combat shotguns with drum barrels... or I could put the rifle barrels on the end of them to make drum-fed LMGs. I guess I could also claim that my raiders were half-man, half-gorilla... ![]() Speaking of eBay... I was pleasantly surprised by how much stuff I saw for sale there. A lot of people seem to be selling the bitz they don't need, and I can probably get more of those Ork Boy Choppa arms (the ones I made into unarmed fists) for VERY low prices. I might also try to get more un-helmeted Ork heads; Fallout Super Mutants tend not to be armored. BTW I think I made myself vaguely sick doing the spray-primer LOL. I was in a very well-ventilated area, but next time I think I'll use a mask. Huffing ain't my scene.

MY GAWD! those are normal plastic space ork boyz arms? my olde plastic space orkz must look like oversized gretchin compared with these new plastics (mine are from the 80s and 90s). those boyz must be as big as the 80s models of the IG OGRYN that i have had since, well, the 80s! i kept wondering how a space ork boy would be large enough to be FALLOUT SUPERMUTANT, and now i know! DAWGIE stunned by it all . . . . |

OOOPS! i was sooooo stunned by the size of these new ork plastics that i forgot to say nice work on them, NINJAMONKEY! also, way back in the days of THE LOST AND THE DAMNED CHAOS 40K warbands, their was a mutation that allowed a normal sized guy to become a real knuckle dragger due to oversized hands and arms . . . so maybe y'all could have a mutated raider in your band with those humongous arms, toting a heavy weapon about like a normal small arm? Yeah, i don't think you have much luck with the ork weapon swaps. Shame. There could be some poses that may be able to take it and they'll be good as heavy weapons but it'll be hard to do the gang. Which is perfect really, with the SMG mod that Danny has suggested you'll have a good mix. You could also slice off mags from the lasguns for sniper rifles, perhaps even extend the barrels if you have sone decent sized wire and a pin vice. I'm not sure if kit bashing is possible with Cadians and Catachans, but it could be worth looking into. You can always ask the crew here what they think. |

Very possible except the legs/torso swaps need a little masking IIRC. EDIT: No the legs/torso swap problem is with Empire Militia and the 40K humans... Edited by Ross, Sep 14 2009, 08:17 PM.

Yeah, I have definite plans for Cadian/Catachan kit bashes: Raider Squadleaders and Raider Heroes will have Cadian torsos, and possibly helmets, to reflect their increased Armor Class. I'll file off the insignia and paint them up to look like they're wearing standard Fallout "Leather Armor." A couple of them will have Cadian arms, so it looks like they're wearing leather jackets with reinforced shoulder pads. One or two may even have one Catachan arm and one Cadian arm for the "Mad Max" one-armed-jacket look. Can't wait to post pics of these guys. I'm also looking at making some Cadians with Space Marine Scout legs. I think they'll look EXACTLY like guards wearing Combat Armor! Lasguns are perfect for them, as they'll generally have assault rifles. They're also multi-purposed: they can be Hub Police, NCR Rangers, Gun Runners, BoS Knights... the list goes on and on. A half-dozen of these guys will go a LONG way. I'm gonna have tons of Cadian legs leftover LOL. I just don't dig those Nazi-esque waistcoats they wear... |

"i kept wondering how a space ork boy would be large enough to be FALLOUT SUPERMUTANT, and now i know!" The Orks have horrible posture, so the Cadians are actually taller than the Orks LOL. |

To give you an alternative to the multi-part kits, you can always pick up the Assault on Black Reach 'Boyz' on ebay. They normally go pretty cheap, and with a few snips, cuts, and violent oaths when you hit a vein, you can have some decent variety going on at a cheaper price! (Seriously, the 10 and 20 Orks sprue auctions normally go for $10 or less.) As far as melee weapons on muties (Discussion from the other thread), I think it's perfectly acceptable. They could fit their oversized fingers into a set of spiked knuckles, so I'm sure they can grip a club or spear. If your really picky about it, you can carve up some spare sprues to be 'very' large clubs, emphasizing their strength. I actually wanted to pick up some of the AOBR boyz myself; hack the legs and arse apart, along with some repositioning of the shoulders, and have them standing upright, Swap or sculpt a new head, do some filling and sculpting, and et-voila; 40+mm of badness. |

Hehe! Yeah, I never got why they could use brass knuckles, but somehow a pistol grip was beyond their ken... Yeah, I think after I pick up my Catachans I'm going to just start bitz-shopping on Ebay rather than dropping fat cash at the GW store. The only set I'm still looking at is probably a Space Marine Tacsquad just to give me the nuts and bolts for my Paladins. I also want to get a Rhino to use as a BoS APC. "If you want to offload some (or all) of them, drop me a PM.... " I may just do that. I'll swap them for just about anything... Edited by Ninjamonkey73, Sep 16 2009, 05:11 AM.

I've been experimenting with how to paint the Super Mutant weapons.![]() On the left is one with just spray-primer, and a little Boltgun metal to accentuate the highlights. On the right is one with ALL metal parts painted with Boltgun metal. In the middle is one I dipped upside-down in the water cup I used to clean the brush I used to paint the Storage Shed. The Boltgun metal really mixes well with the water to create a "wash" that ends up looking a lot more "brutal" than the shiny shit on the right or the dull stuff on the left. I think I may be on to something! |

Get an old brush, dip it in the metal and wipe it off on your pallet, straight away dip your brush in water then take it back to your pallet and mix the water through. Keep doing this until you've got a rough water/paint ratio of 80/20. The metallic flakes in the paint will spread thinly leaving the duller metallic finish you're after. Just be careful, of all the washes and ink effects I've ever tried this one spreads and runs a little too well, usually over all your well painted details... |
