BLOOD OF HEROES

Starring Rutger Hauer, Joan Chen, Vincent D'Onofrio and Delroy Lindo.

In the future, life revolves around a "sport" that mixes hockey, lacrosse, full-contact martial arts and even some knife-fighting. Each team has 4 players... two who look like hockey players carrying sledgehammers, one with a big steel mesh thing with bladed edges that he swings in circles to keep people at a distance, and one "runner" whose job is to grab the dog's skull at center field and put it on your team's "goal" which is a spike in the ground. Yes, it's as chaotic as it sounds.

Rutger Hauer is an old pro who fell out of the main circuit after losing an eye in a game. Joan Chen is an urchin of the wastes who dreams of glory. Vincent D'Onofrio is... the big guy. Hauer's character assembles a winning team, and gets his big chance for both glory and vengeance. Surprisingly easy to watch (director must have been decent) and the great cast overshadows the sketchy screenplay.

LE DERNIER COMBAT

French for "The Last Combat." I don't remember much about this movie except that it's a B&W foreign film with some amazingly surreal moments. In one scene, it rains... fish. Yes, fish. From what I remember, the story involves a blow-up sex doll. Imagine a post-apocalyptic film with a lot of the weirdness of movies like "Delicatessen" or "City of Lost Children." Look for it in the Foreign Films section at your local COOL video store... you know, the one that's not a chain outlet, and where the guy at the counter can actually answer questions about movies that came out more than 2 years ago.

STEEL DAWN

I had to throw this one in there because Patrick Swayze is in it. Picture a post-apocalyptic world where everyone dresses like an extra from "The Beastmaster" and people get around using cars powered by sails. I seem to remember a lot of swords and knives, and of course kicking. Swayze loves kicking.

It's not terrible. It's kind of a western in a way... no horses or six-shooters, but basically a lone drifter shows up and helps a family save their farm from violent outlaws. It just happens to take place in a desolate future world.

Water farmers, if I remember correctly. It's been a while.

Blood of Heroes a.k.a. Salute of the Jugger was fun.

Have not seen The Last Combat. Yet. :(|;):

It's worth checking out. Directed by the now-famous Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) and starring Jean Reno (The Professional) as "The Brute." Could be hard to find; doesn't look like netflix has it yet, it's listed there with a "save" button instead of "add to queue."
