Okay, here's a quick list of places I'm considering building, with pros and cons.

Please tell me which ones you think I should try, which ones you think I should avoid, or which ones you think I've left out!

My basic criteria for choosing these were:

1) Was there faction-versus-faction combat here? (The Player Character and his party could be considered a faction, so that's pretty open-ended)
2) Is the area EASILY visually identifiable as post-apocalyptic? (ruins, wreckage etc)
3) Does it consist of a reasonably "contained" area where a battle could be fought?
4) Can it be "re-purposed" as a generic location for random skirmish battles?
5) Can I actually imagine myself building it from scratch? (I'm very lazy!)
6) Could it be contructed with modular pieces that could be used for other maps as well?

FALLOUT 1:

Khans' Raider Base
Pros: manageable size (main building is 12"x14") simple layout, versatile (large house, guard barracks, nightclub etc.) modular (4 tents outside... I can use the same tents for the Mariposa Military Base, for example) and I already have the layout drawn up on graph paper! ;)
Cons: not sure there are any!

Necropolis Watershed
Pros: good place for Super Mutants, large play area, versatile (ruined city) modular (ruined buildings) and, like the Khans' base, I have already mapped this one out on paper!
Cons: BIG (roughly 42"x48") although much of the map area is open

Adytum:
Pros: can be used to recreate Blades vs. Regulators, versatile (walled city), modular (buildings)
Cons: BIG (haven't measured) and may require lots of Civilians (I have none)

Crash House Hotel (Junktown)
Pros: Everyone loves Junktown, the Skulz gang lives here, it's smallish (no more than 2 square feet)
Cons: is it as versatile as the other "urban" areas? also, not modular... it's one big structure

Old Town (Hub)
Pros: a building full of bad guys to kill, lots of ambient scenery, versatile (city) modular (buildings)
Cons: looks like a lot of frikkin' work!

Fallout 2

Merceneries' Cave (Raiders)
Pros: nice change of scenery for a Raider battle, versatile (caves)
Cons: haven't tried caves yet, also this area is BIG and not really modular...

Den (East Side or West Side)
Pros: versatile (ruined city) modular (buildings) plenty of "Fallout" possibilities (Lara's gang, Joey's gang, Tyler's gang, and of course the Slavers, all of them expendable)
Cons: both maps are BIG with lots and LOTS of scenery...

Navarro:
Pros: change of scenery, military flavor, versatile (military outpost) somewhat modular (buildings)
Cons: kind of big, kind of modern... and features vertibirds!

Shi-Town Docks (San Francisco)
Pros: big change of scenery, and an oil tanker is definitely worth fighting over
Cons: how many scenarios can there possibly be? "seize the tanker" "defend the tanker" LOL

Railway Station (Wrights' turf, New Reno East)
Pros: change of scenery, somewhat versatile (can't be the only rail station in the world)
Cons: like the Docks... how many unique "rail station" scenarios are really possible?

Sierra Army Depot, Surface/Entrance:
Pros: change of scenery, modular (guard shack, fences) somewhat versatile (military outpost)
Cons: kind of big... and that building in the back looks tough to re-create

What do you guys think? Anything missing from my lists? Which of these would you most like to see me work (slowly) on?

:)

I cant see a problem with that list. Do you intend to build each map on a board or are the buildings/wreckage going to be individually based to cut down work on other maps or for other gaming uses?

I want the terrain as modular as possible. Tents, fences, guard shacks, small buildings, ruined walls etc. will probably all be on individual bases so I can use them for multiple maps.

I'll probably do boards for each location, with the positions of the buildings and whatnot marked on the board... or I might just make "generic" boards and give myself more freedom for terrain placement.

Necropolis Watershed might be a one-piece construction. It would be usable as pretty much any generic ruined city. There's plenty of room at the center of the map for another small building, a bunch of tents, a group of vehicles, whatever.

I would actually suggest studying some of the random encounter maps in Tactics; they will
A: Be easier to reproduce
B. The first part is the table itself, which is simple; find some 12"/12" 'somethings', glue sand on, put down some spraypaint, and drybrush to a nice, desert finish. Table tiles are good because they are portable, and easily stored.
C: Some of them feature modular bits, like stands of trees, rock formations, even tents. All of those are hand to have around.
D: You'll have something to play on while you get the fancier projects done!

That last one is surprisingly important; getting that first project done is a major motivating factor, all the better if it's one you can use immediately to game on!
The table tiles work well for this as well; you can just slap down anything you build, and it will likely look right at home.

Damned good advice. I'm shying away from Tactics, but there are a lot of random encounter maps in the first two games that will work very well, like the abandoned farmhouse.

Normally I would as well, but, it does have it's merits; The sprites are rendered much more cleanly, allowing you to get some quality visuals.
Second, a great deal of the terrain, especially the wilderness maps, would be excellent for a modular board; not only for Warfare, but damn near whatever gaming system you want to use, in nearly any setting.
Generic Sci-Fi, Old West, Weird War, Victorian Sci-Fi, Steampunk, Fantasy.. all of them benefit from good wilderness boards.

That aside, the #1 best piece of advice I can give you? Don't take on too much at once. You'll start out well, but you'll grind to a halt if you have too much sitting there, and plod along.

I believe Ross and the others may remember the night I joined, and knocked out over 12 pieces in one evening. Now? I've got so much piled up I have trouble finding the motivation to finish it. I also have some 'other' things to worry about, but that's a topic for another day.

Now, that farmhouse you mentioned.. I believe I remember that one.. Roughly square shaped affair, with one side room, sparse interior, corrugated steel, middle of a small wooded area, nearby Brahmin pen?
Sounds about right.. The basic building itself would be quick.. find some one-sided corrugated cardboard, like what's on the inside of 2-1/2 dozen egg cartons, peel the corrugation off, glue two pieces rough-side to rough-side, and cut to size. Do your frame to your tastes.
The pen.. everyone has their own method for wooden fencing, so I'd suggest just toying around and finding a way you like. Popsicle sticks and barbecue-style bamboo skewers would be handy for that.
I'm still working on trees, but properly gnarled twigs, when dried out, based, and painted, can look quite good. You can shred some floral moss (The stuff for the silk plants) and glue it on before or after painting in patches, depending on how you want it to look, and whether r no you feel like painting 'greenery', as it were.

Speaking of trees, I just remembered I have this... a friend of mine was making and selling these a few years back and I got one for Christmas LOL:

It's just twisted wire hot-glued to a rock, but it looks really cool.

Necropolis is starting to grab my fancy more than Mariposa now. The Watershed map is just perfect... ruined city, huge free-fire zone in the middle, tons of hiding places along the edges.
