I'm not the only one with a guilty pleasure for this terrible but incredibly satisfying post-apocalyptic action movie, am I?

The plot was thin, the acting was weak and the editing was mind-boggling... and the special effects were almost comical... but the one thing it had in SPADES was post-apocalyptic ambience.

Raiders wore rag-tag outfits composed of anything from military surplus clothing to sports gear like football and hockey pads. Cities were desolate, grey and rubble-strewn. They fight in sewers, in industrial parks, in ruined buildings. Guns are scarce -- only a few people have them, and they seem to be homemade and possibly powered by compressed air cartridges; it's unclear. Most of the fighting involves knives... and, of course, kicking. Lots of kicking.

Incidentally, this is the movie in which Van Damme accidentally (but permanently) blinds a stuntman during a knife fighting sequence. No, it's not the scene in the sewer... it's the one near the end, when he puts down his bow and gets rushed by the black pirate.

Granted, I was 16 when it came out, so I didn't notice how awful it was; hell, my favorite band was Nuclear Assault; my tastes were a little iffy. ;)

I've got it on VHS somewhere - I picked it up from a charity shop, and then never got around to watching it (Although I'll do so now!). I'll bring it up next month if you like Danny!

The opening speech by "Fender" (the villain) has been sampled by several metal bands, as it is fucking classic:

"Cure the plague? Why? I like the pain... I like the misery! I LIKE THIS WOOOOOOORLD!!!!!!!"

TBS shows it sometimes when they're doing "Movies for Guys who like Movies" or Van Damme weekends.

This was the movie that made me spend most of high school drawing pictures of post-nuke knife fights in my notebooks LOL.

I had the first 4 or 5 Nuclear Assault albums on cassette tape, to give you an idea of how frikkin' old I am! :P Ironically, theyt started to actually get GOOD at about the time I lost interest in them and started getting into heavier stuff like Sepultura, Obituary and Napalm Death.

Most of the character names in the movie are associated with musical instrument manufacturers, such as "Fender", and "Gibson"...

Yeah, there was some outrageous things happening in the movie, but I was bothered most by Gibson being able to punch after the crucifixion incident. Someday I'll remember it's Hollywood not reality...

Sounds like my sort of flick! :D B-)

I went to see Nuke Assault a long time ago..... this was Liverpool UK of the late 80's. Some guy climbed up a stack at the edge of the stage, it must have been a least 30 foot drop to the floor. He leapt off to stage dive and the crowd parted. You could hear the thud as he hit the floor face down over the band!  He had to be carried out.

Yeah Tink, it looked like it took him about 24 hours to completely heal from his crucifixion wounds. LOL!

My take on that was that Gibson was actually some kind of first-generation mutant with a rapid healing ability. The at the end, when Pearl says something like "maybe he's the real cure..." you could possibly extrapolate that either he's the cure because he's an unstoppable fighting machine, or he's the cure because maybe somehow his mutation makes him immune to the plague, and maybe (like in Heroes where they used Claire's blood to heal Nathan) somehow they think they could create a vaccine with his blood...

...yeah, I know it's a stretch, but hey, it's sci-fi LOL!

Always had some questions about the movie though...

1) Was Fender also a Cyborg of some kind? He's incredibly strong for a guy his size (really skinny dude) and he seems to have a very high tolerance for pain and injury. When he dies, it sounds like his voice is "winding down" like a battery-operated toy that's out of juice. Was this just cheesy movie-making, or was fender part-machine?

2) What the heck was the deal with those guns? There didn't seem to be a muzzle flash, and the sound of the shot was muffled and airy-sounding. When Gibson is shown reloading, it looks for all the world like he's using over-sized CO2 cartridges. Was it supposed to be some sort of compressed-air gun? Were we supposed to believe that all the pre-war ammunition was gone, and that nobody knew how to make more?

"You're the disease, and I'm the cure." Sounds like it was stolen from "Cobra". I musta missed that "cure" line from "Cyborg". Yeah, they were using CO2 cartridges for the weapons... I just imagined they were hi-tech air guns being used.
