My new idea:

I have this coffee table that's supposed to have four 14-inch by 14-inch glass squares in it... only two of them are broken. There's a two-inch strut separating the panes... which means that if I make two 16-inch by 16-inch terrain pieces (with a 14-inch by 14-inch base approximately 1/4 inch thick, to fit into the places where the glass panes sit) I can put them side-by-side on my coffee table!

So now I'm frantically drawing up sketches for 16-inch by 32-inch maps. I could even pull the other two panes out and have a 32-inch by 32-inch gaming area!

I'm pretty stoked for this. I'm re-working the layouts for both Mariposa Military Base and the Necropolis Watershed, as well as some more generic pieces... city streets, parking lots, apartment buildings, restaurants... even a shantytown built on a highway overpass, much like Arefu in Fallout 3.

Right now money is very tight... I've put the part-time writing job on indefinite hold (long story) and Mrs. Ninjamonkey is thinking about taking a more enjoyable but lower-paying job. The money I used to get to spend on minis and paints is now pretty much nonexistent LOL.

I haven't given up on the project, though. I just need to scrape together a small wad of cash, and then get a bunch of low-cost building materials. I'm looking at the following:

quarter-inch plywood sheets, for the bases
fome-cor, for walls and sidewalks
tarpaper, or possibly high-grit sandpaper, for asphault
"granny-grating," for chainlink fences
long kitchen matches, for wooden framing
wooden coffee stir sticks, for wooden planking
spray paints, for spray painting ;)
kitty litter, for mixing with sand and grit to make desert and/or rubble

Man that sucks but still the frugal gamer can lurk and make some pretty stuff from junk and cheapo shop scores. Good luck and I hope the cash restrictions stop soon.

Hmm, well Mrs. Ninjamonkey is still at the soul-deadening but high-paying job, and I've reached a financial plateau of sorts, so I'm revisiting these projects. I think I'm going to try to approach them from a more open mind, and not be confined by what is "by the numbers" Fallout-appropriate. Ultimately, playability has to come before 'accuracy.'

I found some decent sources of 'Fome-Cor' (shudder at the butchered spelling) and have begun construction of some terrain for another project, entitled 'Maim Street.' But I have also built a paper mock-up Tent, and laid out plans for a 32" by 16" Mariposa game board.

I'm trying to make my terrain as modular as possible, using 16" by 16" squares as bases, so one of them is all Tents and Fences, and the other is the Base itself.

The Base is going to have two 'Towers' on either side of a very small 'Courtyard'-type area, with Stairs leading up to the Towers from either side of the Courtyard. Large double-doors at the end of the Courtyard are scenery only; the Stairs are where the magic happens LOL.

In the end, the 'Base' won't look like Mariposa, but it will have enough of a 'Fallout3' vibe that I think it will do the trick. The presence of the tents will suggest 'Fallout2' even though the tents themselves will look more 'Fallout3.'

I shall endeavor to do my best to post pics soon. ;)

Sounds a plan. I often find myself making terrain larger to accommodate bases and minis. A true scale model is nice if all you want to do is display it. I look forward to seeing how this shapes up.
