This is going to be a scale model replica of the Entrance level of the Mariposa Military Base from Fallout and Fallout 2. It's perfect for a game of Super Mutants vs. Anybody Else; set up the Mutants on the Mountain side, and the opposing team on the Surveyor's Camp side. I used an image of the full map at The Vault (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki) as reference and drew up a sketch of the map on graph paper. The finished product will be about 30 inches by about 40 inches, and scenery will include 4 tents, an extensive chainlink fence, a guard shack, an oil truck, a storage shed, a small railcart track, some pavement, and other assorted rubble. I got bored at work Friday and drew up schematics for the tent, figuring it would be a good place to start since (a) I need 4 and (b) they're kind of ubiquitous in the Fallout world and will just plain be great to have around. Saturday I made the first mock-up of the tent, out of graph paper and scotch tape. Here's what I came up with: ![]() That's a Minigun Template sticking out of the front door, and there's a stack of crates outside. The tent has a flip-top to allow you to actually move units into or out of the tent. Here's a shot showing four Super Mutants lurking inside! ![]() I think what I'll do next is work on the fencing. I'm going to need a total of 42 inches of chainlink fence with posts every two inches. I was thinking of using that "granny grating" stuff for the chainlink, and possibly the middle parts from a bunch of Q-tips for the posts. Then I'll just need to do a ton of cutting and gluing, and hit it all with some silver spray-paint, then maybe dry-brush it with some rust. More to come as soon as I have it. Sweet link, I'd never come across that one before! I like your plans so far, what are you going to use as the canvas in your final version of the tents? |

I saw a tent tutorial in the Terrain section that suggested wet newspaper for the canvas, over a wire framework, with some khaki-colored paint on it once it's dry. I may even go full-on paper mache. I'm using the Fallout: Warfare rules, they're bundled with Fallout: Tactics. They're actually in PDF format, so I can probably post them on the forums if someone will explain how LOL. The Fallout: Warfare game itself was never for sale... it was an easter egg on the pre-order version of Fallout: Tactics... so I don't think it would violate any laws for me to share them. I've proxied the game with little green army men, and it's very simple and fast-paced! |

I started work on the Storage Shed. I'm using flat wooden coffee stirrers, the cheap kind that comes by the thousand. The walls come together very quickly.

After I got two walls done, I checked the original map image again and realized the shed is made of corrugated metal. No problem! I grabbed a bunch of corrugated cardboard from work the other night. We'll get to that in a moment, though. First I'll show you how I made the wooden platform upon which the shed will sit. First I measured and cut all the pieces of wood I needed, clipping them off for a cleaner look. The base is 4" by 5" giving a nice 1" margin around the outside of the 2" by 3" shed. I made a TON of 5-inch-long "planks" and two 4-inch-long cross-pieces. I taped the cross-pieces down so they wouldn't move. ![]() Then came the slightly tedious process of gluing down all those planks. I did them 2 or 3 at a time, but I had to work fast because the dry wood really sucks up the glue, which dries pretty quickly to begin with. Once I had enough planks in place to ensure that the cross-pieces were firmly in place, I removed the tape from the cross-pieces and then re-taped the platform. ![]() Once the planks were all glued to the cross-pieces, I flipped the platform over and glued some diagonal cross-pieces to the bottom to stabilize the planks, and the platform was complete. ![]() Next step was assembling the shed. I cut out two pieces of corrugated cardboard for each wall... ![]() ...then glued them back-to back so that both the inside and outside of the shed would have the appropriate texture. ![]() I assembled the shed with small pieces of scotch tape just to see how it looked on the platform... with an angry Mutant inside. ![]() ![]() Yes, it's a very small shed LOL and it still needs a roof and a front door. I'll work on that over the course of the week, as well as finalizing the tents. I also have two wooden walls that need a project LOL! |

Yeah, I can't wait to paint this bad boy. I may try something weird to "age" the wood, like maybe soaking it in Coca Cola... er, I mean Nuka Cola. ![]() I think I'll also put some sort of internal frame on the shed, probably something simple like Q-tip stems, or just more of these coffee stirrers. I need to add oil drums, but I'm unsure what to use... maybe those little cylinders they put in pill bottles to absorb moisture? Dowels? I like this project because it gives me something to obsess over while I save money for more models LOL. Edited by Ninjamonkey73, Aug 31 2009, 08:01 PM.

You totally should... or at least post pics! I picked Mariposa because it's one of the only locations in Fallout where there was direct squad-based conflict between Super Mutants and the Brotherhood, when they send a Paladin squad with the Vault Dweller to help him take the surface. (Maybe I'm remembering wrong though, I haven't played Fallout 1 since my old win-95 PC got thrown out. )I came up with some barrels... these are the little things in big vitamin bottles that say "do not eat." ![]() Screwing around with the shed a little more, working on giving it a framework. It's a bitch. Reminds me of that episode of "King of the Hill" when Hank meets a guy at Anger Management class who builds dollhouse furniture for a living.

Electronic capacitors also work depending on what size you grab, they look a bit like the old metal milk containers used in dairies. Frame work's looking nice and tidy! |

Here's a quick exterior shot of the framed shed with lots of clutter:![]() I used some Trident "Splash" Gum for sacks of grain. I'm also using them for sandbag barricades. They're too big, but close enough LOL. (That's a Super Mutant Hero with the Traps skill; he's carrying a Mine in his left hand.) |
