I may steer clear of using metallics next time. I was happy with using a Smoke effect wash over the rust i have done. But i think you're correct when you say it looks too 'planned' or 'symetrical'. Here's the comparison shot for Dentatus. The Mantis could be a bit small to be used as a manned vehicle in 28mm. Unless, if you do a bit of work on bulking out the cockpit. Other wise they scale in perfect for any scale as a drone. I think the Mantis has great potential as a Hunter-Killer from the new Terminator movie.
