Question about Mutant Ape type?

Hi. I have an army of Eureka Planet of the Apes Gorillas painted up. I wasn't quite sure about how to rate them up. They should be only fair at shooting. Probably pretty nasty in Close Combat. They should be harder to kill. I have infantry and Cavalry along with a slave wagon and artillery battery.

Thanks for any ideas.

Ross has painted a fair few of those, he might be able to provide some insights.

John - your ideas sound pretty good so far.

I would go for Move=5, Aimed = 8+, Melee 4+, Life=8 for a standaed Ape trooper. Make unarmed combat damage increased by 1 or 2, and add +1 or +2 to Melee damage rolls.

I reckon Mattblack's stats look right, here's an idea for the faction.

Tech level: Primitive (or basic depending on your setting, primitive still allows for muskets and you can purchase basic weapons at double price)
Characters: Mutie ape, mutie ape cavalry, chieftain, merchant, survivors slaves.
Starting sectors: 1 sector rolled using D8
Skills: Battle
Upgrades: Mutie ape or mutie cavalry to chieftain or merchant = 10 experience.
Special rules: If there are no ape characters left conscious on the board any survivors belonging to the faction automatically flee and do not return to the roster. If they win a battle any unconscious characters are turned into survivors and added to the roster as long as you have a merchant ape.

Basic Ape
Move=5,
Aimed = 8+
Melee 4+,
Life=8
Special: Knockdown
(25 points)

Ape Cavalry
Move=8
Aimed = 8+
Melee 4+,
Life=8
Special: Knockdown
(30 points)

Knockdown: When this character makes a successful close combat attack against another character, that character is knocked to the ground.
Use merchant archetype for slaver, survivor for slaves and chieftain for the boss monkey. The best first skill for most apes would be brutality to allow them to savage anyone they knock to the ground, see the skills section of the rules for details.

Hope that's helpful, let us know how you get on.

Personally, I'd give them to have Basic Tech as:

1) They are a bit more evolved than their original genetic stock.

2) It fits the Eureka figures.

Just had a look at the minis, really nice stuff! You're right, go with basic they are much better armed than I thought they'd be.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. Sorry that the pics aren't that great. Eureka made Gorilla Cavalry with variant arms. I have around 40 Cavalry and 50-60 Gorilla infantry, 1 amunition limber, 1 artillery piece, 1 slave wagon, 1 mounted Gorilla General and 1 dismounted. The slave wagon in the picture was scratch built and destroyed by my youngest son. I replaced it with a new one from Old Glory's Old West wagons. I used the movie to create my Ape banners. They are accurate to the movie. I have been buying Copplestone and The now oop HLBS Cavemen figs to also do a game closer to what the movie was (although my humans would be a bit more advanced in having spears and such).

I figure that the Gorilla Army would fit in fine with a post apoc background since the last Ape movie pretty much was set in a Post Apoc USA. They faced slightly mutant human forces. I would use Copplestone Scavengers too.

***EDIT
The Cavalry are also from Eureka. I didn't convert them.

Thanks,

John

Here is a preliminary Planet of the Apes sheet. Let me know if it needs adjusted before I slap it into PDF format.

Thanks,

Sorry to harp on this line of questioning, but how long ago did Eureka do the Ape cavalry? I don't think I've ever seen them before :(

I'd say early 2000-2004.

Thanks,
