Ever considered plastic?

Here's the thing, I'd like to do a samurai wargame and I've been looking at figures. I stumbled on some plastic toy figures that I initially didn't give a second thought to but looking into it a bit more I think they have potential.

Here's a link to a pic of a box set of 1:72 (20mm) Ashigaru - plastic pic

What do you think? There's several sets by the same company covering ninja, samurai, monks etc so I think there's everything I would want. They sell for £5 for a box of about 45 figures including postage whereas 28mm would be about £45 with postage if not more. My only real concern is that it can't really be expanded beyond what the company has released and they might be tricky to paint.

What do you think about these and plastics in general?

I say go for it! Enjoy yourself. I use paper, plastic, and metal.

Those don't look too bad at all. Why not grab a box, and try them out. If you don't like painting them of there not what you expect you've only spent 5.
I enjoy plastic figures, the paint doesn't chip off as easily when I drop them on the floor. :$
The sun went down and the ground started sort of grinding.
A blinding light tore across the sky.
A cyclone swept the landscape and left it completely flattened out.
And several twirls of smoke unfolded like gigantic flowers.

The way the morning broke was quite unusual.

The 20mm sizes will give you that extra battle space on your current table top. My complaint is trying to glue riders to their f***ing horses. I've tried every f***ing glue combination and had no f***ing luck with the AWC Calvary I've f***ing bought. There must be some secret to getting them to f***ing join up... maybe they need to be pinned together??? (Yes, I have an anger issue with these fellows) The thing is I bought the same brand in a 1/72 stagecoach and the highwaymen robbing the stage glue together to their horses without any problems.

Could it be that they've still got mould release stuff on them? This page has some info on glue, hope it helps!

I'd say its wort ha try Joe.

Generally, I only ever paint hard 'kit' plastics, as in my experiance the paint flakes off softer ones, but it'd certainly be worth giving them a go!

I bought a bunch of HAT Greeks, Macedonians and Persians a few years before the film - 300.

It scratched a summer gaming itch I had and it didn't involve a huge outlay of cash.

Be careful though as each box costs less than a 28mm metal mini - you may get carried away and over-stock - I did! :D

I read a lot of stuff about paint not sticking but I've painted up some samurai and they've come out ok. Shame the scenery is about 100 times more fiddly than western medieval stuff, oh well - it'll give me something to do on those long winter nights! Pretty impressed with them all round, the flash is a bit alarming though. I think I'm going to switch to 20mm for pretty much everything, I like it a lot. I got my figs from Elheim today, they are great - coming to a batrep near you soon!
