Thanks for the clarification. These latest minis are top notch! I especially like the Clear Sky troopers, mostly because of the blue camoflage. Also, I was wondering what role Freedom plays in your S.T.A.L.K.E.R setting? |

DIMITRI, falling back on my ancient GI GERMAN, kreigjagdhund, means war hunting dog? i like it; one of my www handles is kettenhunde, or "chain dog", because before and after i was a grunt i was an MP. a gastehaus barmaid dubbed me "kettenhunde" (and i later learned it was a derogatory term for GERMAN WW II MP) for most likely impolite reasons, and i liked it. the FRENCH called me "mal chien", the TOMMIES called me "bulldog" and i was called "bad dog" by GIS, when they were being nice . . . anyway between those handles and being a dog faced grunt, i became known as DAWGIE among other names over the years. Your G.I. German is correct, good sirrah! Ties in to my setting.. again. One of the city-states on the Western coast is a fusion of primarily Russian and German culture, and the main 'expendable' military force is the Krieghunde Legion, with variations on the name for specialists. (Kriegjagdhund for marksmen and general scouts, Blitzhund (Lightning Dog) for highly mobile units, Jägerhund or Jagdhund (Hunting/Hunter dog) for specialized trackers and snipers, Schwererhund (Heavy Dog) being heavy weapon specialists, etc. Ranks would also carry the whole 'dog' thing over, ranging from Welpe (Pup or Puppy. Greenhorns, basically) to Auslesehund (Elite Dog) or Sturmhund (Storm Dog), depending on their unit, specialty, etcetera. I have too much fun with this.) |

According to Babel Fish.. Todeshund (Death Dog) Todeskopfhund (Death's Head Dog) Hell, my German and Russian are awful, so I end up spending forever trying to get my translations right. As far as not having those in yet.. well, I'm not done yet, of course! And now I'm in a pack.. and it feels -so- good! Still, my stuff isn't a woodpile. My bio. Father's family tree? Now -that's- a woodpile. |

You know I was thinking about this the other day. As the zone is out there now and the world knows about it their original mission is gone. They serve as a alternate faction to Duty offering lone Stalkers a place to camp with out all the brain washing and rules. They still love the zone and its wonders. The view the recent apocalypse as a "gift" of freedom to allow mankind to throw off the shackles of its oppressors. As "Anarchists" they oppose any faction trying to take over the zone or enforce any sort of law and order. They are still at war with Duty who want to destroy the zone, the Military (Red Star) who have similar objectives and Monolith who want to stop everyone getting close to the centre of the zone. |

AH, WELL, i wuz close . . . DIMI my complete RUSSIAN vocabulary consists of such social grace winning statements as STOY!, URRAH-URRAH-URRAH!, TOVARITCH, KALISHNAKOV, etc, and i used to know how to say (very badly) "YOUR EYES ARE THE COLOR OF THE SUMMER SKY, YOUR HAIR THE COLOR OF COPPER" (which only got the attention of very alert red heads with bright blue eyes who could understand really badly spoken RUSSIAN with a TEXAS accent, and really hacked off blondes or brunettes with other colored eyes who knew what i was saying, and went largely ignored by most women who had nary a clue as to what my line was). LORD, there were times when folks from different nationalities (including BRITS!) were convinced i was speaking an unknown tongue when i tried to dazzle them with my "linguistic skills". . . DAWGIE, remembering the days of youthful adventures in faraway lands . . . . PS= i went to the trouble to learn how to say that in RUSSIAN because i had a very pretty teenage girl neighbor that lived two apartments down in ARLINGTON, VA, and i was an interested teen aged boy) |

My Russian is pretty limited, like I said! Chyort, Das-Veedonya, Atleechna, Svoluch, Ladna, Seelna pyan, Pa-eedyom vypyem, Kooda pryoshsya, Nas ne-dogonyat, Y solsa s-uma, things like that. (A quarter of that came from listening to t.A.T.u., even.) 'Do you want to come out with me tonight?' is something like 'Hohchish pa-eetee kooda-neebar sa mnoy sevohdnya yyecherum'... I think. I could be horribly, -horribly- wrong. Oh, and Danny! Project's coming along nicely!

Cheers guys!
You know I have that problem every day. I speak with a different accent to most of the folks I work with but you would think I was speaking Martian or something. I have told them that the Scouse (liverpool) accent is a mix of Irish, Welsh, Scots and Local West Lancashire bumpkin with elements of every race in Europe (and China) who settled here trying to get to the USA. This is the natural evolution of the English language and with globalisation in a couple of hundred years the whole of the English speaking world will sound "scouse". The look of horror on their faces is priceless. |

i remember too very distinctive TOMMIE accents that stood head and shoulders above all others that were hard for me to make any sense of what so ever. rural YORKSHIRE speak sounded like _nothing_ i had ever heard before that was supposed to be ENGLISH, and there was another southron accent that was hard for me to understand if it was spoken really fast; kinda like WELSH/ENGLISH, but i cannot remember where i was told it came from now. . . probably another rural accent . soooo SCOUSERS are from LIVERPOOL? MANCURIANS are from MANCHESTER? CUMBRIANS are GEORDIES? seems like i remember the back of beyonders having a thick accent, too. NW ENGLAND, close to JOCKLAND, if i remember my UK geography correctly. nae tae lang fer muh feebal brane to kin, wot an' awl nao!!!! DAWGIE, who had a really charming TEXAS YANK accent that the lasses and frauleins liked to listen too . . . especially when he was buying the beer and toting the party money! |

Aye some of the Rural Yorkshire and Lanacashire guys are a bit difficult to understand. Me an old farmer once who only lives 15 miles from Liverpool, and I could not understand a word he was saying! Yup - Scousers are called that due to a local dish we cook "Scouse". Its the usual poor labouring region type dish. Mancuians are from Manchester (or Mancs as they are now known). Cumbrians are from Cumbria (also known as the Lake District) which is NW England up to that Roman wall. Geordies can be really difficult to understand, they are from Newcastle and the area around it Northhumberland (NE England close to that bloody Roman wall again)- they are known as mackams I think (to the Geordies any way. Like to Scousers the dwellers of the local farm regions are called Woolybacks). Brummies are from Birmingham, cocknies - London (although I think its east London only), Taffies - Wales (although I have been told that is North Wales only), Jocks - Scotland (not too sure what the locals are called in various parts, although there is a East and West divide, and the Highlanders are North), the Irish are just Irish these days (as its now politically uncorrect to call them Paddies despite their patron saint). I think that is it...there may be more I have missed. |

I think that about covers it for 'named' regional accents - down my way (South West) most of the regional accents sound much the same, and there aren't too many ways of distinguishing them. Having said that, the cornwall accent is a bit different, as is the accent in the city of Bristol. (Although the Bristolian accent is kinda hard to put your finger on, as it's still rather Yokel. Generally it comes down to the use of certain words, and adding 'l' to words ending in vowels... which brings us to the joke about the Bristolian man who named his daughters Eva, Ida & Norma -> who where known as "Eval" [with the accent sounds like evil], "Idal" [Idle] And Normal...) |

OVER here, we have various southern state accents -each distinctly different to natives, but all sounding the same to YANKIES, as well as TEXAS, ARKANSAS, and OKLAHOMA which are very different sounding to natives. we have hard YANKIE accents up in NEW ENGLAND, and there is an area in MASSACHUSETTS where the natives sound positively BRIT! as well as accents from all of the other states ( CENTRAL STATES, WESTERN, SOUTH WESTERN, CALIFORNIA, ALASKA and HAWAII. i thought i remembered 'scouse being food dish but have no idea what it actually is (potatoes, meat, etc) NYC (NU'YOK), BOSTON (BAAS-TON), PHILADELPHIA (FILLY), CHICAGO (SHY-KAGA), NEW JERSEY (JOISEY!), BALTIMORE (BALL-TI-MER), MONTPELIER (MON PEEL YEAH OR YUR), ATLANTA (ADD-LAN-TAH), CHARLESTON (CHARLSE-TON, MOBILE (MOE- BEEL), NEW ORLEANS (N'ORLINS) accents are probly our most well know accents. OOPS! almost forgot THE LANDS OF YAH! (WISCONSIN, MINNESOTA, IDAHO, WYOMING, DAKOTAS, WASHINGTON STATE, PARTS OF OREGON) lots of GERMAN and especially NORWEGIAN, SWEDE,, and DANES settled here, hence the LANDS OF YAH . DAWGIE |

Interesting Stuff Dawige, good to see its not just Britian that has the accent variations. I think NY and Texas are probally the most distinctive to Brits. Although Brooklyn is one on its own. Strangely I have found that cities have accent variations too. For Liverpool I can often tell what district some one is from by how they speak. Scouse is a Stew type dish boiled down until it is very thick. So thick you can make sandwiches with it (although you dont often find retailers in Liverpool doing this). It consists of Beef mince meat (although you can add what ever meat you have laying about), onions, carrots, some herbs, cabbage and potatoes. Scouse can be made veggie too with no meat (usually if you where poor) and is known locally as "Blind Scouse". Of course I make mine with some secret ingredients to make it taste even better.
