Gaurdians of the old straight track. Wickedly wicked. And Xander, you're a painting machine!

:) thanks - most of these things are bits that I had part painted previously... It should also be noted that I'm not one to bother with too much in the way of washes/highlights/shading - so most of the Vikings are just flat colours for the colthing which speeds things up... (they still look good on the table though) Having said that, the guardians had a lot of work done on the skin & gold, and some done to the clothing

Xander, have you thought about any rule sets? I'm curious because, I too, have considered playing out a couple of skirmish games just to try out some paper Norsemen I have one my hard drive.

I would hazard a guess and say Mr. X is going to use the Song of Heroes and Blades (I know the one I mean but I may have gotten the name wrong...)....

I wonder what gave you that idea Ross... ;)

Tinker - I've been doing some thinking on that very point. I was originally going to use Broadsword Adventures, but then its very much limited to a skirmish game and the archetypes don't fit terribly well with what I've got in mind. It'd still work, bit not as well as I had hoped. I'm currently leaning towards Song of Blades & Hero's + the Song of Arthur & Merlin expansion (dark age welsh king stuff) with a bit of fudging to give me what I'm looking for - slightly bigger forces (warband level, say 20-40 figures a side) as well as more varied baddie potential and slightly less record keeping

Lol - Possibly 'Warlords of the west, 485'! Nah, I'm not really sure that skank has the scope for what I want to do, where as SBH atleast has the beginings of it....

Al - what rules do you use for your Dark Age games?

Have you tried Celtos? It's probably set a bit earlier but most of the mythology and weapons are probably suitable. I didn't like the rules very much, not that they're bad they're just an exact copy of warhammer fantasy battle but more orientated towards a dozen or so fighters out cattle raiding and pillaging. Not sure how they dodged getting sued for that one. You can often find the rulebooks very cheap on fleabay and they have some nice stuff about making scenery and some interesting background.

I might see about picking a copy up then. I must admitt, I wasn't particularly taken with the celtos figures (bad case of 'cricketbat sword' syndrome)

Nor me, though to be fair they don't photograph at all well for some reason.

Xander - I started with Songs of Blades and Heroes. Good game, but a bit fiddly for larger numbers of troops: knocked down, pushed back, or killed results for combat, magic was a bit wonky, and did not like the measuring sticks. A bit too much like DBX for my taste. The gruesome death rule was cool, though.

Currently using One Page Fantasy Skirmish without magic and grafted on a simple set of morale rules. Okay, so now it's Two Page Fantasy Skirmish. :(|grin: It's not as detailed as SoBH, but faster with larger warbands and multiple players. Going to be running a ford (river crossing, not the car) battle at Historicon using these rules.

Started looking into GW's The Lord of The Rings Strategy Battle Game with modifications from the LOTRvariants yahoo group as a possibility. We shall see.

That would be cos they are fairy folk.. :D

I might take a peek at the Celtos rules too. My big problem is that I know wayyyy too much about the legends that they are based upon and it irks me that certain characters are in the wrong factions.

Al - Ok, I'll let you know how I get on with SBH. They seem to have brought out sort of rule to differentiate personalities from troopers, although I'm not entirely sure how or if it adds any streamlining. I'll take a look at those one page fantasyt skirmish rules.

As regards LOTR, its a nice little system, although still very Games worskshop in feel and mechanics. Oh, and please take lots of pics from Historicon :)

On that note, please feel free to point out any stumbles over mythology I may make! Certainly, I'm basing things around ideas presented in story books rather than actual myths. If I really get into the period, or get it to take off at Gamesoc, then I may well have to do some actual research....

Yeah bring them up, I would be up for a game. Although I have little in the way of terrain for the era. One round house, some trees. :D
Well, which ever rules set I settle on, they both seem to prefer small tables, so that should be about enough... we may need to produce a hill or two, and maybe dig up a few stones...

Stones I got.... :D

Actually I am only really familiar with the Irish legends (and may be a couple of Welsh ones too) that Celtos is based upon and they pre-date the dark ages although they were not recorded until the 11th century. Still I do know a bit about North of Hadriens wall around the dark ages too.

Don't buy Celtos then it will make you want to snap something! The Fir Bolg are especially shamefully treated.
