This is what comes of watching the Conan movies too often, especially when coupled with a childhood spent reading/listening to Alan Garner novels nad stories of Arthur... Throw in Beowulf & Grendel, Arthur & 13th Warrior as recent movie watches and you can start to see how things happen...

Set in the miscilaneous dark ages, after the Roamans have withdrawn but before Christ really starts to interceed, I'll be using Conan esque barbarians; Romano-British 'civillised peoples'; Saxon & other hairy germano-norsemen as different, more warlike, civillised people. Throw in a helluva lot of myth, a hint of legend and a dose of fantasy and stir. Its aworld where the high magic of the roman empire is beng forgoteen, and the 'old magic' which has lain supressed for millenia is beginning to rise again. Savage tribes stirr beyong the known borders of the world, ancient evils creep out from their lairs, and they say that a pair of great dragons - 1 red, 1 white - was seen fighting in the Western sky on the last night of the old year. A great king will be needed if the world is to be saved and the islands of Britian reunited. But what ever happens, great tales and sagas wll be spun, Valhalla's halls will be filled with the dead and the ringing of swords will fill the land....

Sounds great, I've been slowly collecting some Celtos figures for a similar kind of game.

Nice work and you can use so many of the Dark Ages ranges too.

Got to admit to being tempted to set up a dark ages army. Britons, Picts and Scots/Gaels are all tempting (blame a book I read on Dark Age Scotland). How can my twisted little mind resist?

Now I see the interest in the Beowulf models! Get some, they look great!

Are you going to add themed terrain for this Mr. X, thatched houses and the like?

Very cool!

The great thing about the "Dark Ages" gaming: 12 to 20 men are a warband, and 3 or 4 warbands are an army. It's not figure intensive for a "historical" game. Though you might find yourself investing in a lot of different shades of brown paint. :(|;):

The kind of scenery you could have is a draw too, all those standing stones and hills forts and burial mounds - great stuff!

There's some nice miniatures at Crusader Miniatures in their dark ages range.

Tthere will be scenery as well at some point - although it'll probably come of eBay as and when I see it.... To a certain extent, this isn't going to be a massively growing period - it will be something I add to now and again, when I feel like painting something different or when I see some figures going cheaply. As I say, don't expect it to be terribly historically accurate, but hopefully it will capture the feel.... (I already have the lord of the wild hunt in paint... as well as some guardians of 'the old straight track'.... more on that when they are finished though...)

The Guardians of the old straight track. Legend has it that the track was ancient and long since disused before the Romans came. These days it can only be seen under the light of the full moon, and runs straight across the land for as far as the eye can see. Some say that it has no end, and that it runs forever up to the heavens or down to the underworld, others say that it is guarded by strange men, over 7ft tall and wearing majestic horns. These warriors carry silver axes, wear golden armour and have skin the colour of summer leaves. But of course, thats merely myth....

Well, once I get a few more, I could bring them up for a game sometime and see if I could tempt you further....? ;)
Its not been helped by listening to Bernard Cornwall's 'Arthur' series whilst painting these fellows... It's tempting me towards slightly earlier times than my current vikings....

Looking good, Xander!

Yea! Slings! A length of cord with a pouch and some rocks. The weapon that was so commonplace for so long that most folks ignore it - and because bows and arrows are sexier on the big screen. :(|grin:

Yeah bring them up, I would be up for a game. Although I have little in the way of terrain for the era. One round house, some trees. :D

'The old straight track' features vaguely in 'The Moon of Gomrath' by Alan Garner (a character has to follow it to find a herb, and thats where its age and the fact that it only appears during a full moon comes from./ The rest I made up...
