It is a "limited exchange scenario" so several strategic points are nuked but the world did not become instantly covered with rad zombies. There was an immediate loss of advanced technologies, as one would expect when electricity goes bye-bye, and, being farmers, they adapted and survived, remembering what their grandparents taught them. There were conflicts with resource allocation, and problems with a road gang, a private security company, the "U.S.M.C.", a rival town that wants to conquer them, and occupation by the heir apparent federal government.

My only big complaint is that for being in the middle of farm country there ain't a whole lot of firearms in the hands of the locals: a few pistols, some hunting rifles and the odd shotgun, but no assault rifles. I guess the writers were from suburban New Jersey, not Rural America or Big City, USA.
