It's mainly made of .5 inch blue insulation foam, the detail bits are craft sticks and bamboo skewers.

the bricks are just base colored. I had just started to paint it before I decided to crash out for the night. The gray color over top of everything is a mix of latex caulk, industrial strength version of white glue ( kind of like liquid nails), plaster of paris, and some grey latex paint. it gives the foam a nice grippy texture and makes the pieces a lot more durable than just paint over foam.

That looks great, really realistic. I've never tried carving foam but it looks a really useful material.

Love the details in the gray wall section, I'd say you're onto a winner with this style!

God damn that's some good wall! What exactly is insulation foam? Is it a fine sort foam i guess. What tools did you use to make the detail with. The wall section with what looks like cornice in the midst of the brick i especially need to know how you did.

styrofoam

for tools i used an x-acto knife and a ballpoint pen for the brick. a retractable cheapy snap off blade knife to cut the bottom front part of the wall off. then stuck a craft/ ice pop stick under the brick then a piece of (5mm?) thick foamcore into that then the botom bit that sticks out is leftovers form where i cut out the bottom part of the wall.

i'm horrible at explaining things. if you want i can do another one and get some wip building pics that shows how i fit each piece.

here is an attempt at showing how I do it.

start with random piece of 1/2" extruded styro.
Posted Image

draw out your brick pattern
Posted Image

take a retractable hobby knife and cut the foam in half 2 bricks deep
Posted Image

remove 2 "rows" of bricks cut half way through the foam
Posted Image

cut fairly shallow across all the brick lines, and then trace over them with a mechanical pencil to widen them. a ball point pen works well too.
Posted Image

cut myself some windows
Posted Image

now the cool looking bit. Cut some pieces of craft stick / ice pop stick to the required length and glue it down.
Posted Image

then take foamcore or whatever else is roughlythe same thickness. replace with whatever thickness of material you want the recess to be. I usually cut a strip as high as the brick then cut it down to account for the stick width after I glue it onto the wall
Posted Image

take the two layers of brick from before that got cut away earlier and cut them into two strips. Glue the original end strip back where it came from.

I didn't even consider passing a blade over the "mortar" before using a pen, very helpful tip. Nice Tutorial, and ready to see more of your terrain, not only PA stuff it can be other games too.

I was checking out the Mad Max mini you got in the Minature thread, when i saw the walls in the background of the shot.

This is just what i needed to get my head around these walls. It's the archetroves (i think thats what they are called) at the top of the wall that really make these walls 'pop' for me.

Oh wow... Looks awesome :)
I'd love to see a modular board made like this.

Love the tent! Did you work out how to do a removable top? I'd have made a frame out of the skewers that would have fit just inside, covered it with card (that'd overlap the frame slightly, covering the top of the sides) and then covered that with the tissue. I'm definitely going to borrow that idea and make myself a small encampment :)

no progress on the tent. got 3 walls for my latest building built and got the foundation built, but i cut it too small!!! it'll just have to wait for another smaller building.

Once I get caught up on the buildings I'm cranking out for e(vil)bay, The plan is to build a 4feetx4feet area in 1foot by 1foot (or Increments there of) pannels and have a modular post apoc downtown area. I think I might do some 6"x12" pieces as well to allow for wider road sections or back alleys and whatnot. the bare hardboard will be textured with sand and painted to look like asphault. ( hopefully)

I've always hated textured boards. Maybe the people i know have just done them wrong, but i've found the mini's fall over often and they get dents or marks. Anyone else found this a problem?

I started to clean up all my ebay terrain offcuts and got bored, so I put those scraps to good use and started working on another terrain piece that I will probably never finish :-/ . I started on a home camp/base for my soon to be forming CotC survivor scavs.

I really like the looks of the door and door jam. Looks like your using Popsicle sticks for construction, or maybe coffee stirrers.

Man thats pretty cool. I like it. I am tempted to knock one up myself (one day) as it would be useful in Mattblackworld and in Stalker World.

You got it. I used bits of popsickle sticks for the door and doorjam. I used very thin strips of shaved/peeled bamboo skewer for the horizontal supports on the actual door and just a cut length of complete skewer for the hinge/pivot. I made a small hole and dripped a single drop of superglue into it to give the bottom bit of the door pivot somewhere to rest that would not wear away as fast as bare foam.
