OOC: while trying to get into fantasy RPG's recently and the house of the rising dead just kicking off i thought i would try and kick start a new RPG to breathe some life into this sub forum again.
any objections?
good

Beredon was a half dwarf. almost unheard of in the dwarven realm of cragen. his mother had had an UN marital fling with an elf when on expedition in the dark lands. he was known as the stranger, an went from town to town picking up jobs and loose work trying to make his way.
standing at 4ft 5 he stood at the door to the black ark tavern. a large drab sign Nailed to the door read
"we don't want any trouble. if your looking for it leave town"
Beredon chuckled to himself, his stomach rumbled and he pushed open the door, ducking slightly to get in. as he entered 30 or so small dwarven faces turned to stare at him. he stared back for a moment the traipsed over to the bar to get something to eat.
"What'll it be sir?" asked the small dwarf behind the bar in a low and husky country accent.
"Yard of your finest" answered Beredon looking for a chair he wouldn't crush.
"is there a place i could put my kit for the night, somewhere i could rest?" he asked the busy barman.
"i think - there's a spare room - on the second floor" he said pausing in between breaths as he poured the large yard of ale.
receiving the ale beredon took a large sip, and pushed some gold across the counter looking the barman in the eye,
"somewhere safe....?" the bar man froze and stared back, taking in what he meant he hastily rang a small high pitched bell and a small halfling came running out of a door behind the bar, only 3 feet tall he climbed onto the ALE barrels to see the visitor.
"yes sir" he weazed
"when this gentleman has finished his drink, take him to the northern square. to arcannion. understand" the bar man asked
"oh, yes sir" the halfling squeaked smiling at beredon.
beredon finished his ale quickly, he had always had a strong stomach. the halfling took him through lots of dark alley way and underground passages before they reached a small black door in the middle of the square. it seemed to be the door to the tallest building in the city, the derelict bell tower.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
a small slit in the door slid open,a pair of eyes appeared first looking at beredon then down at the halfling. the door the swung open and an arm protruded and drew in the two characters. in the dark room inside, dully lit by two candles beredon could make out about 20 or so characters draped in black robes and all sitting next to a manor of weapons, great axes swords, crossbows and much more.
"thank you elfin" grunted the small Grey haired lanky man who opened the door handing the halfling a gold coin. elfin quickly scurried off back into the street an the door closed.
"hungry?" asked the man. handing beredon a bowl of what seemed to be a bowl of rat soup.
beredon grunted in answer and sat next to one of the shady characters snatching a glance at the fellow before he sat, he could see he was a half orc. his skin a very pale sickly green with black and orange spots dotted around his nose like freckles. to his lfet there were two other characters. he couldn't make them out beneath there hoods so he decided to talk to them. see what he could find out about the place.
"evening." he began
"whats your business?........

Bresak muttered as he felt the cool night air race through the room at the opening of the door, banishing the warmth of the hearth to the furthest corners of the room and waking him from the first sleep he’d gotten in far too long for his liking. Honestly, it’s hard being the only Arcanist in town who won’t be knocked over by a strong breeze.
He leaned forward and pulled the remains of a thick cigar from behind his ear looking at it almost with disdain. A small rune suddenly became visible on the shoulder of his armour, glowing red for a moment before fading back to black as the stub of the cigar began to smoulder. Bresak placed the stub between his lips and leaned back to get a look at the newcomer.
He could see that the newcomer the blood of his people within him, but diluted somewhere in his past. ‘Poor bastard’ he thought to himself. Bresak knew all to well what it was like to be an outcast and had the scars to prove it. He fit neither in with the bookish Arcanists of his family hold, nor with the war parties. The first thought him too rash and militant whereas the latter wanted nothing to do with him and his magics.
Lost in the musing of his past, Bresak sunk back against the wall, the shadows seeming to wrap themselves around him in their comforting embrace.

Right… The last one of these I did ended badly. So lets see if this goes any better.
Bresak, (pr. Bres-ack) is a Dwarf, if you hadn’t picked that up ;) My idea is based on the Dwarven runic magic seen in some fantasy series’.
General idea is that he is a pretty strong fighter in his own right yet he has this large selection of Runes that he can use at will. They don’t require a gesture or a vocal command, although some of the more complex Runes will require a spoken command or even the caster to shed his own blood to focus the magic. The Runes can do anything from personal buffs, say making him stronger or healing him, to more offensive magics such as firebolts or shaping the earth.
Sure it’s powerful; I wouldn’t get away with this in a D&D game unless we were a very high level. But this is a story, so I promise to behave. In a way of balancing it out so it isn’t quite so powerful, is the theory that all the magic has to be channeled through the caster. This will mean that even though he may be able to cast some extremely powerful spells in the blink of an eye, it will gradually take its toll on his body and mind if he doesn’t get a chance to rest.
Sorry about the detail here but I think it’s really cool :) I’m playing a Runesmith (see Races of Stone) in one of my games at the moment and the ideas I’ve talked about here are all part of a project of mine to increase the prestige class from 10 levels to 20.

Not done one of these for a while, Ill give it a whirl..

The newcomer was a half breed. Dirty Blood, thought Alkimos, as he sat at far end of the table, his features covered deep in shadow. It was bad enough that they had a half orc amongst them, now another? At least he knew he was pure, with a lineage to match to that claim. With his Great Grandfather being one of the last true Maharajah's of the Far Eastern Kingdoms, how could he not be? Alkimos Smiled to himself, and thought longingly of his home, Alakesh, the Jewel of the Eastern Sands, with towering minarets and great temples of the Gods..... But alas, it was all so far away. His mind returned to the present, and the state of affairs before him. The half breed must be here for a reason, despite who or even what, he may be. Best be friendly for now.

"What is your business?"

"Before you ask me my business, Newcomer.." Spoke Alkimos, his thick Alakeshian accent still strong after so many years in this land, "I suggest you tell me yours. Why are you here? And what, more importantly, do you want?"

"I'm not entirely sure you see," he started realizing the room had gone quiet and suddenly seeming quite cold he drew his cloak tight against his skin.
"i was helping out an old farmer, just outside the village, Scrunt problems you see"

OOC: SCRUNT = ranging from small to ginormous a scrunt was breed of goblin who unlike other goblins ALWAYS lent to the mischievous side of the balance

he took a sip of the soup, tried to chew it and then let it dribble out of his mouth back into his bowl, disgusting stuff.

"i haven't done much, not since the last wars with the eastern kingdoms." he claimed, the stranger sneered but said nothing.
"any way, i was always fighting for whoever paid more, like a hired sword. when i finished the farmers, well lets say work he put me up for a few days and i asked him what work there was around the city, work i could rely on. he sent me here"

stopping again for a sip of his soup and this time chewing it till he had to swallow, he had learnt from the upbringing of his family to take what you can get because you never know when it could be your last.

"he said to ask either for a safe place at the black ark or for a man by the name of arcannion. i was surprised to find the farmer dead in his sleep the next day. so here i am. assuming we're off on some massiv adventure thinking i would be going cave delving with a group of four or five specialists and what i get is a room full of hooded freaks and a half orc"

as he said it he chuckled to himself, but it was too soon to be relaxing and certainly the wrong thing to say in the company of a half orc. the room suddenly became very aware, and the stranger next to him turned to Beredon swiftly

Bresak cursed and flung an arm across the half-orc's chest, pinning him to his seat.

"I'd be watching who you be calling a freak, half blood."

His words were made all the more threatening by a growl from the half-orc...

Everyone stops as the door swings open and a huge eagle head pokes itself, quickly followed by a pair of front claws. The wings prove a bit of difficulty ftting through the narrow door way, and the creature has to press its belly to the ground to get its wings to fit through the door. A long tawny cat like body followed. The beast was bigger than a bull, with large wings and filled most of the spare space in the room.
"I hear someone here is hiring. Any chance you could use a gryphon?" The accent was strange, a cross between purring a gentle trilling burd song. The gryphon's beak brakes open into a ferocious expression, as it leans over to the half dwarf "Are you eating that? I'm famished" Beredon suddenly realises that the great animal wasn't snarling at him, but grinning.

"Uh - not really. Here you go" the Dwarf replies - passing the bowl across.

The gryphon reaches out a a taloned forelimb and takes the bowl. "Thanks" he says cheerily, and settles him self down to eat, partly blocking the door. "I'm Ironclaw by the way" the gryphon says between mouthfuls.

"If we could all settle down please. Gryphon, you are welcome to listen to our proposals, with no comitment to join us on our quest. The same applies to all of you. Newcomer, before you manage insult us all, Allow me to introduce myself..." Alkimos flung back his hood, revealing a young, yet wise, tanned face with deep set eyes. His hair was neatly bound up in a small turban, with a small gem pin holding the deep red cloth together.

"I am Alkimos, currently 4th in line for the throne of Alakesh, providing my family ever reclaims the throne back after the last.... Invasion...." flicking his eyes in Bresak's direction. "But that is not why I'm here. We are here, as a collective, to find something a little more, interesting, than what you would find in some muddy hole. But allow our "expert" to tell us more....."

arcannion the until now scrawny hunched over figure in the corner of the room drew himself forward.
"well greetings" he began. turning to Beredon "do you know that halfling personally" he asked, Beredon shook his head
"shame, lovely fellow" he followed accompanied by an agreeing purr from the gryphon.
"we are gathered not on a cave delving quest as our new friend Beredon fleetwood has described his expectation of the events to unfold here."
beredon shuffled uneasily at the thought that this man, who until now had seemed so harmless knew his family's name, no one had called him by that name for at least a century.
"after the last war with the eastern kingdoms the wastes were never the same, for the last 60 years volunteers have been going out to the verdon fields and are still cleaning up after the battles fought there, our problem is this. not two weeks ago the local seers pickled up a disturbance in the natural balance and traced it to the fields, see every couple of decades or so there is a natural shift. things change and balance is restored in one part of the realm more than others. much like the conversion rate of gold with diamonds from cragen to aklesia in the last war. this though was something different. they think, though the chance is slight that the Zenelesians have re entered the realm."
there was a disturbed muter in the room and the gryphon choked on a chunk of rat, the gryphons were all but wiped out by the zenlesians in the wars of the empires century's ago.

Bresak rose to his feet, and stepped forward into the full light of the fire. As the light played across him, his skin seemed to glint as if the light were catching precious metals embedded within his skin.

"This is all well and good, but what's it got to do with us? I was under the impression we were here on a smash and grab?"

He then chuckled to himself, before continuing;

"Well, a smash, grab and run as if the gods were after us. You don't gather 20 mercenaries of our ilk together to knock over anything short of a full Drake lair."

"he has a point" rose beredon, he pointed around.
"the orc, he's nasty and we know what hes most likely like in combat, and this dwarf here, most likely brilliant with runes, and the gryphon, i mean a gryphon!"

"what about you then." called a voice from he other side of the table
"well, i like to hit stuff" he answered, "hard!".

"This strikes me as a good time for our esteemed employer to come clean on what he needs us for... Now don't get me wrong, I love knowing I'm fighting for a good cause just as much as the next man."

He grinned, before continuing...

"Although that is considering the fact that being paid is a good cause in my books..."

"I would normally agree on the pay" Ironclaw cut in, looking deadly serious "But I'll waive that if Zenlesians are involved. My people were almost destroyed holding back the tide. If they are returning, it is my duty to do everything in my power to prevent their sacrafice having been in vain...." The gryphon's experssion cracks around the edges "...but I may still have to insist on some for of pay for food, as this stew is Disgusting!"

Alkimos Stirred from his seat, "You may Jest, but the Zelesians are indeed a great plauge upon this world. But I fail to see what we can do, in such small numbers, unless this treasure holds some significant value. Please Arcannion, tell us more."

arcannion coughed and caught the attention of the adventurers.
"this is the thing, we need to find a way to stop a possible outbreak of the zenelesians before it happens. we need 10 adventurers to journey to the Verdon fields and close the gate."
the room became very aware, there was only 10 needed yet there was at least 20 in the room.
"as it seems, and i have gathered by your reaction that you are wondering why there is so many of you here then. we are in affect going to have 'auditions'. we will meet by the barracks outside the city tomorrow. at the break of dawn, as for pay. we will discuss it nearer the time"

he finished and turned towards the door through which he had entered.
"and one more thing, we have accommodation for you all, ironclaw, im afraid none of the rooms where big enough so you must -"
"sleep in the barn? that's OK" he grunted finishing arcannions sentence. it wasn't like he wasn't used to it.
beredon couldn't help feeling sorry for the poor gryphon.

Ironclaw woke before dawn. As barns went, this wasn't so bad. Lots of hay & straw for bedding, and not too many drafts. At least it wasn't a stable. Whilst he didn't mind horses, they certainly didn't like being cooped up in a stall with a gryphon close by. The neighing usually kept him awake for hours.

Wandering out onto the street, he shakes his wings out before flying over the city to the barracks. No sign of anyone else yet, but also no sign of breakfast. He thought longingly about the possibility of stopping somewhere for breakfast, but feeling how light the money pouch on his harness was he decided against it as he slowly circled down to land in the training field behind the barracks. He wanders around to the front, stis and begins to preen, working the occasional stand of hay out from between his feathers

As Dawn rose, Alkimos was already awake. He had said his morning prayers, and now was dressed in light garments, but with his thick cloak still about him.Kantesh sabre at his side, he descend the tower, noticing no one else was awake, and entered into the streets, still bathed in a hazy darkness. He pulled his hood over his face (he still wasn't considered a "local" in these parts...) and made for the barracks, eager to see what this "audition" was all about.

Bresak muttered as he wandered down the vacant market place in the pre-dawn light... Dawn was still an hour off and he'd already been mugged twice, not to mention the confrontation with the guards over the dead body of the first mugger.

"I mean, he clearly intended to kill me. It's a risk of such a career, that you'll find someone who doesn't really want to part with their purse and would rather just kill you. Stupid mugger, bloody authorities... What the hell did they expect by asking if it was my axe embedded in his face, the twin of the axe was still in my other hand. I swear humanity is getting dumber by the year."

He couldn't help but laugh when he thought back over his second mugging of the morning though... True to his word he hadn't killed the mugger. Being plane shifted to the elemental plane of Fire probably didn't bode well for his well being however...

Suddenly feeling much better about being stuck in this stinking human city his thoughts drifted forward to the upcoming trials...
