Hi everyone, I went to a train and car swap meet the other day, and some interesting cars. Problem was that they were either too small, too big, or ridiculously expensive. I'm having a look on eBay for a few things, but it's hard to tell if what you're buying is going to be any good until you have your grubby hands on them! So, a few things: Anyone want to list a few places where you can get decent cars for use with 28mm? What about diecast vehicles? What scale should they be in? From memory anything from 1/43 to 1/50 could be good, depending on manufacturer! Where do you get them? I'm resisting the urge to look through my old toys (as they're buried deeeeep in the garage) so instead I'm trying to buy other people's! What do you use for miniatures to ride inside them? I think the toughest thing is getting ones that look "right", despite scale etc. Most of this information comes up in people's posts but it might be an idea to put it all into one tidy post. |

I'm putting this in the too hard basket......... though, if you can somehow get hold of Matchbox cars the right scale (I got No Mercy from the supermarket) they work pretty well. Cararama isn't bad, probably a tad on the big side, and the cars are more modern types, and you can buy them from the distributor but you're buying them as single type in bulk lots of 20+ so that's probably of no help.... |

I get all mine from cheap thrift or bargain stores. I would go for 1/50 to 1/48 scale. Be warned that the models are often made to fit the packages rather than to be true scale. I would take a mini to the store and check the vehicle size to it. If it looks good then buy it. |

Depending on your definition of 28mm, people like S&S Models and Worldworks have gone with 1/60, so S&S have a few drivers but they are all in military uniforms. Ramshackle and some others have basically 1/50 vehicles which are best thought of as Ork-size but after the apocalypse there's no cops or Main Roads or Department of Transport to tell you your rig's too fat. Much of the wargaming world seems to have settled on 1/55-6 so Jada 1/64 series would suit as they are actually vastly too large for 1/64. The toughest thing is not getting ones that look right but getting figures you can actually stuff inside the car. I have many Jada cars and they work perfectly, now it's just a matter of getting crew for them. I also have some Fastlane 1/50s I am planning to use for Nuclear Renaissance. May also get their 1/48 bendybus too. Looking for cheap toys too, considering a 1/50 John Deere bulldozer as a killdozer. I managed to stuff a Ramshackle driver figure into a Hot Wheels Off the Lot 1/50 combi. Some of the 1 Badd Ride vehicles seem to be swelling a bit beyond 1/64 too... closing on the size of Jada. |

Hey that's interesting... 1/64? I thought that would have been way to small! I might grab some of those Jada cars then. I've seen some awesome Mustangs and stuff. Is that compared to chunkier GW 28mm, or the slimmer 28mm? It is really too difficult to generalise, you can only really go in with a miniature and see! |

I use "O Gauge" through 1/43 scale mostly, with some "1/48" plastic models mixed in, as they are cheap, readily available, and cheap... did I mention cheap? Manufacturers: Fast Lane, Road Champs, Yat Ming, Ertl, New Ray, New Millennium, Corgi, Motor Max and Maisto Diecast among others. They can be found at Toys 'R' Us, Wal*Mart, K-Mart, the local model train shop, various dollar stores, flea markets, yard sales, swap meets, local toy stores and - if a good price - eBay. And like mattblackgod suggests: take a figure with you to compare, as the tradition of "box scale" is still alive & well. Edited by RavenFeast, Apr 21 2009, 12:58 AM.

Not too small as Jada seem to have made some typos on their calculators and the scale should be taken with a pinch of salt, they are bloody huge. That's plain 28mm, compared to GW nothing short of Ramshackle or Fastlanes larger trucks will do, as the figures are so overinflated. Plus the gw figs do not fit into a vehicle less than 10 scales too big. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k56/thoughtengine/SDC10008.jpg ![]() |

Funny though, GW figures are always a bit all over the place. I have some Diggas from Gorkamorka that are pygmy sized compared to the rest of the figs... that and Necromunda seem to be smaller than 40k. And it goes on and on. Quite a pickle. A '54 Jada Mustang is about 10cm long... hmm. I *think* that might be good enough for the figs I have. I shall get one and let you guys know

GW figures mainly scale with age... Every release of a new game has seen all the figures get more 'heroic' in proportion. The reason Diggas & the older Necro guys are smaller is that they are from older games! Stick some RT IG next to some modern figures to see what I mean.... |

all that wrangling with the tags and they don't come up. The mini is Kat from Hasslefree, behind her is a Fast and Furious car from RC2, the jeep is Matchbox, ahead of that is a Foose mustang, the yellow one is a Welly 1/60 mustang and the blue and white one is a Jada mustang. |

I have some very early RT IG (called army back then) and they are more heroic 25mm than 28mm. |

I just got some Jada 1/64 cars and they are definitely too small to use with GW (as mentioned above). They look big for their scale, but not big enough for my little men! However, I think they would fit alright next to some Eureka 28mm figs for sure. I'll have to try it out, I'll post some pics up when I can! Cararama seems to be the best fit so far. And they're 1/43... Edited by Christian, May 5 2009, 03:52 AM.

I bought a Jada at Walmart, and I agree that it is a bit small. There are some 1/50 Hot Wheels out in the stores that I'll be buying to check those out maybe tomorrow (local time). I'll post what I find out with photos...

Well I finally was able to purchase the "Mid-Scale" Hot Wheels Cars previously posted about going to buy. These are 1:50 and in my rad-baked mind very close to the correct scale as I can find off the shelf of a non-specialist store. There were purchased at a local Mejier's Super Store. The collection of these mid-scale will include Ford, Plymouth, Scion, Chevy, Volkswagen, Dodge, Nissan, Pontiac, Mitsubishi, Mercury, Ferrari, Honda, Shelby, and Willys. ![]() The family shot. Three in the back of the group are Voltswagen paid $2.38 each before tax; middle vehicle is a Jada 1:64, it's already been dirtied by the mfgr! I forget the cost of it and the Doc Hudson, which is a 1:64 (this car has appeared in the wasteland threads before, by Bungle http://s1.zetaboards.com/Post_Apoc_Wargames/topic/532935/1/ Last is a 1:50 Hot Wheels Camaro cost $4.99, and will be turned into the vehicle Danny discovered in this thread (toward the bottom) http://s1.zetaboards.com/Post_Apoc_Wargames/topic/1426379/2/ The figures are three Star Wars Miniatures and a miniature from the Chronoscope range from Reaper. This Volkswagen I just love the German motto of "Revenge of the Rat", and I'm going to leave it on the car too!!Just so y'all can have something else to look at... http://www.hotwheelscollectors.com/showroom/productline/150/ tinker |
