Anyone else read "The Stand" by Steven King? Its a (semi) post apocalyptic novel, as most of the earth gets wiped out by plague, allowing "God/The Devil" (in a very loose form) to have a play around....... There's not great massive destruction for your fallout/nuke blast post apoc themes, but the idea's a good one. Some of the ideas (such as a road tunnel filled with cars and the recently deceased :twitch: ) make for some good inspiration. I'm not a great fan of the end... but you'll have to read it to find out!

No - I'm afraid I haven't either. I'll also ditto Danny on keeping an eye open. Have you read children of the corn? Its not PA but I was going to use it as insperation for either a PA encounter or maybe for a Deadlands Weird west game...

Read it, and watched the film. Book was better.

There actually is a bit of nuke-action, but it's later on in the story, and not a global issue.

While not -terrible-, the religious bent grated on me, and it felt a bit long-winded at times. Still, a decent read all in all.

Yeah I find Mr King can be a big long winded. I recommend James Herbets Rats Dominion as a great PA book. Its the third in the triogy and it unlike the rest the giant mutant man eating rats return just after Russia nukes London. The book is full of survivors and their storys during and after the blasts. Quite horrific in places.

I've been noticing that more and more in King's books.. now, I enjoy a good, long read, but there needs to be -some- pacing. Build-up. Action. Interesting dialogue. A breathtaking description. A baby-eating contest. -Something-!

So many times, I find myself thinking that the past 5,6, or however many pages were 'nothing'. You know what I mean.

Ah, mini-rant aside, was that Herbet, or Herbert? Not being nit-picky or anything, I just want to try and find his stuff. Sounds interesting, and, with any luck, I'll be able to con some money from my relatives..
(B-day. I'm not expecting much of anything, seeing as I'm turning 20, but maybe I can sucker them with the 'But I'm going to finally try and get into college this year!' shtick. I actually am, and I need models to keep me busy, along with a mini fridge, smokes, and booze!)

Many times over "The Stand" has been recommended to me for reading, I have never completed the book. King writes very strong short stories and several of his novels are top notch reads, though "Cujo" was the very first novel I ever put down never to finish, udder crap.

I read Herbert's, "The Rats" in my High School days. A good read, and I think I read the second, but wasn't aware of a third book.

I think I may have done... was it a short story? Or have I just read an extract?

I recently read Cujo, the whole thing's daft.

I'll have to look into this Rat thing....

I have a love-hate relationship with Stephen King. He's an amazing storyteller, but the problem seems to be that he writes ALL THE TIME, whether or not he has a good premise to work from, or a storyline that makes sense.

I read the 1100-page version of The Stand. It took me a while. The religious elements pissed me off, as did the cop-out ending. It was still worth the effort, though. It was interesting seeing how survivors of an epidemic pitched in and rebuilt small patches of society, but it was silly to limit the story to two locations, one "good" and one "evil." Life just isn't that black-and-white... most of us live in the gray area in between, and that gray area is what post-nuke (or post-apoc) is all about to me. Like the Vault Dweller said, "I learned that sometimes to be a good person you have to do bad things."
