Some comments on another thread got me thinking - which bits of the hobby do you like best? Which bits do you hate most? Some like terraining, some like minis, some like gaming, some enjoy creating backgrounds and characters.... Me I like most of it. I cant think of one bit I do not like. I came from a military modelling background - figures, vehicles and dioramas/vingettes (1/32, 1/35, 1/72, 1/76). Been doing that since I was 4! At the tender age of 14 I discovered fantasy and sci-fi minis and my love of the hobby started (I found the military modelling lacked imagination). For me wargaming is a way to actually use the models for more that just staring at them. I love knocking together terrain, mini conversions, painting minis, building vehicles (kitbashes and conversions especially), painting said vehicles, creating backgrounds and characters (here my fevered imagination can run wild), writing rules and scenarios. I even enjoy the odd game - I say odd as it is often solo here in the land of the GW (kids, teens, and early 20's mainly) and historical gamer (mainly guys older than my dad!). The things I am not big on are sculpting (only because I am rubbish at it) and painting eyes (90% of the time I have to redo them). I used to hate baseing but now I am warming to it. Who's next? Come on speak up - dont be shy! |

I LOVE GAMING THE MOST!!!! i really do. it is my favorite part. everything else, absolutely everything, is just a buildup to the actual battle of wits and skill that is the wargame (just wish i could experience it more...). painting is okay, if i'm in the mood, otherwise it is just a chore. terrain-building is pretty fun, more so than painting. i just lack the inspiration and materials and cash for materials to make it . the actual building of the models is probably my second favorite part. i dont have much in the way of imagination (i got a little bit), so creating characters and their backgrounds is kinda tedious for me.come everyone! post! this is a good thread! -Oz |

I love assembling, cleaning and converting miniatures, and painting them in small doses. I also love building terrain, but HATE painting it. I'm not much of a gamer anymore, every now and then I play a game of mordheim or necromunda, or I try some free rules I find online but those games are seemingly months apart. |

I take great pleasure in building and painting the figures and terrain, but it's all for naught if they are not used in a game. There's both the artistic and the competitive outlet. What I really dislike is the preparation of the models before painting. Not the assembly, drilling, gluing and pinning, but the removal of mold lines and flash. Making a full length chain halberk was more exciting, and I did that twice!

I have to say gaming is my fave part of the hobby. My painting skills aren't really something to be sniffed at but often I find it almost a chore to get things painted. I also really love creating a history for whatever I'm playing and really trying to add some character to my games. |

Damn tricky question this, and it's one that could be answered differently depending on the 'mood' I'm in at the time! Firstly, for the most part, I love the painting, more than that, I love painting flesh, specifically female models. I know, very sad and slightly disturbing but I imagine you'd all be used to me by now. At times it can be a complete chore, so more than just "painting models," I love painting characters, one off's. Secondly, setting up a table is at the top of my list. I love, love love the look of a nicely detailed, well thought out table chock full of terrain. None of this open plains battle fields business! Making terrain is fun, but I tend to get bogged down with "is this going to work?" or "I want it to look like 'this,' how the hell am I going to do it?" so I tend to sit staring at piles of junk just running building scenarios over and over again. I don't like? Vehicles, for some reason I just can't get into painting vehicles without it being a huge chore. Way back in the old 40Gay days, I steered clear of vehicles too. I think all up I have in the vicinity of 15 vehicles vs 500 infantry. My favorite saying is "give me a thousand infantry to paint, or failing that, one tank!" But all that depends on real life and natural human motivations. |

Converting figures or vehicles.........really what got me into post apoc (apart from the fallout games and other cool stuff) was the potential to convert everything........I HATE having 2 identical figures in a game. Edit: that would be 20mm and above......althrough even in 15mm I use as many poses as I can. John Edited by Earl of the North, Apr 2 2009, 07:19 PM.

I guess I'm a bit of all of it. I really enjoyed the building/conversion aspect of the hobby; creating masses of characters to make up units. But I used to find painting so many 'characters' in such a uniform way boring as hell (A reason why my 3500pts + of al individually converted orcs has never seen more than 15 modles painted...) Recently my tastes have changed a bit - I enjoy the painting a lot more, and the conversion work less (to a certain extent I think thats more to do with switching to metals & all the extra hassle that entials). Its also helped that I've moved more towards skirmishes, and painting more irregular forces (take a look at my GASLIGHT confederates or modern africans to see what I mean.) Each figure is an individual character. Vehicles I don't mind painting... but It usually jsuts takes forever so doesn't tend to get done. The same with terrain to a certain extent; althoughI do now have plans to start a new set afresh, and make it arrid-y to use with a Fallout style AC57 setting & the modern africans. What I also really enjoy is fiddling with rules. Adding new weapons, playing with troop types, and more. Most of my rule books have piles of pencil annotaions & notes stuck in with ideas/suggestions/etc... |

If you asked me 5/6 years ago - I would have said gaming! bang bang pow pow! If you asked me 3/4 years ago - Gaming's cool, but I like fully painted battles! (Ah, my WHFB army... full of little green goblins )If you asked me 2/3 years ago - Gaming's a bit lame at times, some people are too intense! Painting characters/small skirmish groups are awesome! Ill keep that up, but sod this company! After abandoning certain "games systems" and not really doing mush for a couple of years, I'm getting back into the swing of things. I haven’t made much terrain really, nor have I painted (many) vehicles (I agree with Ross, I always "steer" clear of them). Preparing models is a bit of a pain, but it has to be done I suppose! As long as its not a bore... I'd say I like painting the most. The finished article always gives me a sense of accomplishment. Plus they look nice on the tabletop. |

I've recently been a bit more into gaming lately, because I have people to game with But I've always liked the painting side, just not ranks and ranks of figures to get done. I like treating each miniature with the care that I think it deserves

I'd have to say I love most of my hobby. Gaming is a blast. If I didn't love it, I wouldn't keep going back despite almost never winning a game. It gives me a chance to hang out with a friend or 2 for a few hours while doing something exciting and entertaining. It helps that we're very casual gamers. Terrain building might be my favorite. When I got involved in wargaming, the first thing I did, before even painting a single mini, was build and paint a 4x6 gaming board. Six sections, completely modular with roads and rivers. I keep finding new pieces of junk to work with, or new ideas to "borrow", and it's easy to work on a little at a time. Don't know how I'll make myself stop when I run out of room. Collecting is very exciting to me. Planning a new gang or character, figuring out how I want them to look, then tracking down the needed parts. Thrills the nerd in me to no end. Converting minis is right up there too. It's so gratifying to take a mini (or parts) and make something completely new out of it. Weapons, poses, design, all unique. Even with borrowed designs, no one's is just like yours. Tinkering with rules is also alot of fun. Streamlining clunky parts, fixing things that just don't work for my group, and mixing in new things that might be fun (Orks in Necromunda for example). I don't spend alot of time working on characters and backgrounds. Everyone has a name that I think fits them. They have a reason why they do what they do, and some degree of personallity. It is an important part to me, but a little goes a long way. I find painting to be enjoyable, but it's not as high up as some of the other aspects. The hardest part is finding time to pull out the minis, the paints, the paint supplies, the drop cloth, etc. and still be able to sit down and spend time painting. I don't have room to just leave my paint stuff out. I have to use the kitchen table, so I have to make sure the area is well protected against accidents. It really cuts into the joy. I'm not thrilled with having to clean minis and remove mold lines. It's not so bad since I'm not working on army sized groups, but I could live without it. All in all, I'd say this hobby is a pretty good fit for me. |

I love, yet hate nearly all aspects of the hobby.. ah.. perhaps I should explain that.. Painting: It's awesome to see something you've taken time and skill to make look awesome, turn out awesome. Then again, the entire time I'm painting I tend to have 'This looks like crap..' running through my mind on repeat. Also, there are times where I just -cannot- seem to make things work, and that makes me even more lethargic to the dozens of duders needing some brush-slappage. Building models: Pretty decent most of the time... except for mold lines. I hate them with a fiery passion. I can never seem to clean them off completely, despite my best efforts. Many times I'm tempted just to not bother, seeing as it keeps me from continuing on, but then, i know it'll kill the look in the end. Terrain: Love/Hate. It's fun to build, but, I've normally got the 'This looks awful' thing going through my head the entire time. Once I slap some paint, I tend to be a bit more confident, but, there are times when that's a bit too overwhelming. (Large buildings, or swarms of stuff.) Sculpting; Haven't really done it, but I would love to try. Same goes for major conversion. Rules/backstory: One of my favorite parts. Creating personalities, reasons for things to be the way they are, or, just reading through game mechanics. It all fascinates me. All in all, I enjoy the hobby, but, it's kind of a 'Mood' thing at times. Pretty much in a boat much like Ross...'s. ... Damn names that end with 's'. |

I hear you on the voice - I often get that too. What you need is to show them to a non gamer or slap them up on here so you get different opinions. I used to make terrain and think "that looks poo" then I would show it to another gamer or non modelling fan who would rave over it and be amazed at what it was constructed from. |

Well, that's one reason I joined, you know? I know a few people who are interested in gaming/modeling, but don't have the time, so, maybe I'll swing some more stuff by them. (And, yes, one of them is a woman. A redhead. Who also plays bass. And is very attractive. And is generally awesome... who lives about 500+ miles away from me, and has a boyfriend. )
