there have been many different types of apocalyptic events that have created many of the PA/sci-fi books and films. robot takeover, zombie outbreak, nuclear war, and giant meteor are a few that spring to mind. so my question is, what created your apocalypse in your background of choice? i think it would be pretty awesome to see/play a robot apocalypse game ala Terminator or I Robot. laters, Oz |

It's always been a tough decision for me... I've studied 20th century history pretty extensively and I've always been fascinated by the development of the super-powers and the ensuing cold war. I would have to say my fave is a pretty basic nuclear apocalypse. I just flesh out the politics of the situation a bit more. But then zombies are also really cool

I started out in the Apocalypse stakes with a Nuclear apocalypse.... Then it drifted to a rather large rock colliding with earth (entirely down to watching 'Deep Impact' and thinking 'Awwhh shucks they managed to stop it & we don't get a post-apoc sequel') having read Babylons Bruning I liked their idea of a REALLY big rock heading for earth, and then being nuked to oblivion (well- lots of small size rocks and a couple of Deep impact size ones). Due to he mass usage of atomic weaponry, the meterorites are also radioactively contaminated... |

My all started back when 2000AD was a title for the future....and the cold war still raged. So it was largely inspired by the 2000AD comics (Dredd, ABC warriors, Stronium Dogs). Massive world war with a Nuke war was inspiration. Although virus, rage virus and zombies have all made appearances. I did the whole Babylons Burning Big rock hits Earth background too. Sadly it limits mutants and other goodies. So I picked a far future setting on another world - just so I can have genetic engeneered critters and some pretty swish surviving tech. It was also a great way to mix and match all my modern/near future/sci fi minis into one setting where they could knock the snot out of each other.... |

There is another background I would like to game. It is based around the STALKER movie and PC games. In them a stone falls to earth and destroys a village (in the movie) or lands in the Reactor sargopigous at Chernobyl. The monolith is said to grant wishes or dreams. It is though to be a gift - from who no is sure - the Gods, Aliens or some strange alien lifeform (the zone feels alive). It creates a zone which is filled with strange anomoloies and (in the games) Mutants. The zone is slowly expanding and defends itself in many ways - one being a massive emission which kills anything out in the open. No imagine the zone speading so the entire world is covered. A single emission could kill many millions. The anomolies come in many flavors. There are space-time ones that transport you to somewhere else (a good way to spread Zone mutants about the globe), ones that act like a mini vortex, some that compact everytihng in it, ones that burn at 1200C, electrical ones but to name a few. Even a few of these in a urban area could kill many and leave it a wasteland. Another one is from the PC game Bioshock. In that a genius finds a way to boilogically alter bodies effectivly giving them super powers. Sadly many people go insane from this. Plus the only way to make the seruim is to harvest it from dead bodies. Imagine one guy obsorbing all this power and ability then going on the rampage in the world. He would be close to a indestructable god. Worse than this is the many slicers addicted to the gene tonics. They are insane and very aggressive to anyone unfamiliar. They also have creepy powers like being able to crawl across celings. Even if the big guy is killed the world would be haunted by splicers and the harvesters (Big Daddies and Little Sisters). It would make for a interesting background. |

Virus......mass outbreaks, with the government withdrawing the uninfected into Vaults. Mass use of Nukes in an attempt to destroy the infected.......200 odd years later the Vaults open to find there are survivors mutated by the virus and fallout. John |

That "200 odd years later" to me would allow more believability by not revealing what, why, or how it happened but the world resulting from it. The Apocalypse occurred, we only now need to just survive. There is another idea I have stolen from one of the Star Trek Movies the "Genesis Device". Setting Mid 21st century... science conceives and builds a device that will return the Earth's Ecological/Environmental balance from the edge of catastrophe. This "God Bomb" becomes the "Goddamn Bomb" when the device creates life not in the image of God, but into the image of the insanity of Man. Catch all I should think; mutants, cannibals, zombies, dinosaurs, monkeys with guns, high tech, low tech, no tech, CHAOS. All the charms of Post-Apocalyptic possibilities and impossibilities!! ![]() |

Well, the only guys with the knowledge are the Vaulters, who aren't actually running courses on 'How the Apocalypse happened and why' there mainly concerned with gathering up all the pre-Apocaylptic tech and exterminating any of the 'wildlife' they find wandering around.......the Virus/fallout just gives the reason for all the weird guys and creatures running around Post Apocalypse. It could be 200 years, 500 years or 1,000 years later, for the wastelanders it wouldn't make much difference, the background is only really for the Vaulters. Yeah, I went through that for about a year.. But, for rules, it depends on what you want. Skank is good if you don't plan on having personalities lasting more than 1-2 games, as it seems. Apparently Combat Zone is pretty decent, but I haven't looked at it yet.. Fallout: Warfare isn't the most expansive, and is somewhat Warhammer-based, but it's still amusing. I'll see if I can think of anything else later. As far as Apocalypses go.. most flavors are pretty nice. I've been toying with my own, involving your standard WW3 scenario, without the world going boom afterwards, instead having political tensions, terrorist/rebel action, etcetera lead to the final 'Boom'. Still working out the kinks.. and a ruleset. And an attempt to sculpt mini's for it. And get a book published. Hey, I can have my head in the clouds for a while, before reality bitch-smacks me back into the world. |

JAR; I was actually hoping to set it up so you could do pre, during, and post-apoc stuff with the same book. Wanted to show how the different power groups may have started as worker's unions or gangs, then gradually turned into power players/rabble/whatever. I'd try and get wild and cram RPG and Wargame rules in one book, somewhat interchangeable, with optional stuff to make it as detailed or simple as you'd please. Hell, if anything ever came of the idea, I'd have the core rules up on my site for free, just as a trust thing. As in 'I trust you'll like my crap, so here's the raw stuff to fool around with! Enjoy!'. ..... I'll stop now. |
